Not only is Edgar Winter a musical genius, his brother Johnny was the first non-African American inducted into the blues hall of fame (1988)

Edgar is singing and Johnny is on guitar. That's my boys from Texas. Edgar and Johnny were born albinos. They couldn't go out and play in the hot Texas sun. They stayed inside and taught themselves to play every instrument they could get their hands on. If it makes a sound, they can play it. Their mother took them to New Orleans to see BB King. She went to BB King and asked him if her sons could jam with him on stage. She show him their Entertainer cards and he said OK. BB King was very impressed with their abilities as just teenagers. Edgar formed his own band called The Edgar Winter Group. Rick Derringer got his big start with Edgar. You should hear Edgar's instrumental song "Frankenstein". ❤🤍💙💥🔥⚡
Actually, Johnny said he met BB King at a local black club in Beaumont Texas. He kept trying to get BB to let him. BB tried to spit the hook and said he could not because of union rules. Johnny whip out his card and got to play with BB. He played with BB many times after.
The first time I saw Johnny was in 1958 and he was playing outside on the back of a flatbed truck.
If you haven't noticed that Johnny and Edgar keep their eyes closed. The bright lights bothered their eyes. “Part of it was because they were legally blind and their acute hearing made up in part for their lack of sight.” When it came to their solo careers, Johnny chose blues, while Edgar took an eclectic route; his career spans jazz, blues, pop, soul and progressive rock.
Yes, they are both Albinos and legally blind (sunlight is cruel to the skin and eyes). So they were mostly kept inside and learned to play.
Their father (who is from Mississippi) played in churches and learned from Gospel and Blues. Both are Icons and musical genius.
Soul music, Gospel, Jazz, and Rock & Roll were their lifeline to the world. When you say White Guys....these guys are white; their
souls have no color. This is more than soul; it's SOUL - Johnny is a Blues/Rock Guitarist Icon, and both he and Edgar played multiple
instruments. You don't see live music like this anymore, talent like this, no autotune, no backup tracks, just talent.
I had the joy of seeing Edger Winter, Leon Russel, and Delbert McClinton one new years at Billy Bobs in Fort Worth on New Years - they played till 3 am. One of my favorite performances.
Johnny plays guitar and is also a great singer and his younger brother is Edgar on vocals, hammond b3 organ, sax and he plays other instruments too.
Johnny and Edgar Winter had their own bands and musical styles, but sometimes they came together. Johnny Winter is one of the greatest blues guitarists of all time, and Edgar is a multi-instrumentalist who was more into jazz and rock. We saw Edgar a few years back outside of Houston and he and his band was still kickin' butt!
They were albino brothers and they had to spend a lot of time in the house as kids to stay out of the sun so they learned to play music and they did it on a whole different level!

Just a FYI, the bassist is Tommy Shannon. He was part of Double Trouble of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. He and Johnny played at Woodstock.
OK guys, please do yourself a favor! That video really featured Edgar, you MUST hear Johnny on vocals and tearing it up on guitar in this live video below. Johnny was a blues guy at heart, but he could rock out like nobody’s business! Even if you don’t put it on the channel, just crank it up for yourselves!

The Winter brothers were raised in East Texas and both being albinos, they couldn't play outside in the sun so they stayed in and mastered musical instruments instead. Edgar is singing, playing keys and sax while his brother Johnny is a legendary blues guitar player. Johnny has passed away but Edgar is still going with his Edgar Winter Group. You need to see his band doing Frankenstein live as he'll knock your socks off!

Muddy Waters is one of the ALL TIME blues GREATS!! Johnny produced a couple of his albums in the 80s I believe the first won a Grammy. But anyway I saw Johnny when Edgar was in his band in 1968 in a small club in Birmingham MI where I stood 10 feet from the stage and they BLEW ME AWAY!I saw them separately and together a few times through the years

Well, Phil and Sam. Now your getting into my music growing up. The Winter Brothers- Mountain- Humble Pie- Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush-Robin Trower- Pat Travers and so on. All excellent bands. All bands out of the 70s.
You can just tell these guys just LOVE to jam.
Lead--Jimmy Page, bass--John Paul Jones, drums--John Bonom, vocals--Robert Plant. The only person to sing lead other than Robert Plant was Sandy Duncan one track "the Battle of Evermore" (duet).
Older brother Johnny was such a great guitarist and Edger on Keys / Sax was the real deal.
Tobacco Road is an old song from 1960. It has been done by many. This is one of the better versions.

The Bass player is Tommy Shannon. He played bass for Stevie Ray Vaughan. Edgar on organ and sax, Johnny on guitar. One of the best guitar players in my opinion. Thank you for the videos.
Awesome, when I watched “Frankenstein” a little while ago, I was hoping you had heard “Tobacco Road”. This was absolutely amazing in concert. I saw them in 1976 at the Long Beach Arena.

Having grown up in the Tampa Bay Area on the late 60’s and 70’s I was able to see a lot of famous bands. I’ve seen both Johnny and Edgar by themselves and together. Johnny was a formidable guitarist but Edgar was the more rounded musician playing keyboards,sax,and percussion,plus hiss vocals were amazing. Give Edgar’s Roadwork,album a listen. It’s really good,and Johnny Winter And,two of my favorite albums of theirs. Thanks for doing this review.
So happy in my younger days (65 now), I got to see Edgar and Johnny both several times. Amazing musicians and singers. 😊 We had the BEST music when I was growing up!😊
I've seen Johnny about 9-10 times, once with Edgar. The band here is Johnny Winter (guitar) Edgar Winter Keys and sax) Uncle John Turner (drums) and Tommy Shannon (bass). Tommy went on to play with Stevie Ray Vaughn and Turners wife shot and killed him in 1983. RIP Johnny and Uncle John, thanks for all the great music. Jim

This is Edgar playing with Johnny's band. Uncle John Turner on drums and a very young Tommy Shannon of Stevie Raye Vaughan's band Double Trouble. Tommy got an early start with a blues legend, Johnny. Similar experience here. Saw both Johnny and Muddy Waters many times but highlight for me was both together after relaxes of the Hard Again LP at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. Is that where you happed to see them? I know on other occasion Johnny was know to pop in on other gigs Muddy Was playing and would sit in.

The Brothers Winter🎶💙‼️. Others have already filled you in but no one mentioned that this bass player is Tommy Shannon who was Stevie Ray Vaughan's bass player and best friend. Tommy played with Johnny Winter for 3-4 years and even played at Woodstock with him.
I have seen Johnny over 10 times, Johnny and Edgar are albino, got to meet and talk to both of them. Extraordinary Musicians Johnny has passed a few years ago Johnny and Jannis Joplin's dated, has played with Jimi Hendrix as well as Jim Morrison
Edgar won a Playboy Magazine alto sax player of the year award (jazz) in early 70's.

Johny was a friend with Muddy. They jammed together. Johny also won a Grammy for producing one of Muddies albums. Edgar could play anything you handed him.

It was Johnny who was the renowned guitarist. And Johnny was also the more successful commercially of the 2.
But they were both great and they were really great when they played together.
I was lucky enough to see Johnny live at pirate world in Miami in 1970.
They were one of those kinds of artists that are more greatly appreciated by their peers than say the general public. Which obviously is a much higher compliment.
Johnny was legally blind because he had crossed eyes. He died a few years ago from a heart attack because he was a heavy smoker most of his life. Edgar has been playing with Ringo Star's all star band recently. His best album was Roadwork in my opinion.
The "genre" of music they played is Texas music. It's a mixture of everything, and much of it was created there over 100 years. There was nothing like it anywhere else in the 70's either. Hundreds of southeast Texas bands were the same way...delta blues to jazz to soul to rock...all mixed into one sound. The Winter brothers from Beaumont Texas were the epicenter of it all, and down the street lived Janis Joplin in Port Arthur. The east and west coast producers kind of ignored them thinking they were just another hillbilly band since the first thing they read was "Texas" and they didn't like it anyway. Plus there was no social media at the time, and they produced a lot of their music locally. Like the Big Bopper did, also from Beaumont. Then, there was Buddy Holly from west Texas, who invented the Beatles sound, and then Stevie Ray Vaughn from Dallas and the hill country areas of Austin. Unless anyone lived here then, the only people who heard it was when they were on tour to other places and were shocked at how great they all were...off the charts great. To us, it was just Texas music. We thought everyone knew.
I love Johnny. I like Edgar. Edgar a bit self indulgent here for me. Johnny rooted in blues especially his earliest recordings. He produced and played in Muddy Waters series of LP recordings in mid to late 1970s. I saw both Johnny and Muddy many times live and the highlight was seeing them when they played together after release of Muddy’s “Hard Again” LP. Was at Auditorium Theatre in Chicago and also in that band was Pine Top Perkins on piano and James Cotton on harp. Want a night that was.

I never saw them live together, but I did see each seperately. Interestingly, both times they opened for Black Oak Arkansas in the mid-70's.
OH man, way back Johnny played on the Bossier Strip in Bossier City, LA; Johnny and Edgar were from Beaumont but somehow ended up playing a lot in N Louisiana, prolly cause there were so many juke joints and blues bars around back then. They were not typically "jazz" guys but they were major "blues" guys. This brings back memories!!

You don't really get the full impact on how good Johnny was on guitar from this one, but he can rock out.Check out his version of "Johnnie B. Goode", "Rock And Roll Hooch Coo", and "Rock Me Baby". He also has a good rock voice. His brother Edgar made one of the best classic albums of all time in "They Only Come Out At Night". Hits like "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride" came off it but the whole LP is cool.

Johnny and Edgar are both Albinos ( no pigment in skin) so they spent alot of time indoors learning all the instruments. Now do Edgar's Frankenstein live, ya'll will like it better.
apart from the 20 minute set queen played at the live aid concert, i believe this is the second best piece of musical performance ever captured on film! keep up the great work guys! big love to all people :)

That bass player is Tommy Shannon. You might know him as Stevie Ray Vaughan's bassist.
The bassist, Tommy Shannon, went on to play with Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Johnny and Edgar primarily played separately throughout their careers. Johnny playing with all the blues greats. Edgar was more experimental. His voice is a little more steady on his studio work. The live instrumental, Frankenstein is a must watch however.
Some of the best work done by the Winter Bros. was in Edgar Winters' White Trash.

Tobacco Road is from Edgar Winter and Johnny was only guest. Pay more attention to details before sending false titles around. The best recording is on the live album Roadworks but is not Johnny playing the guitar. I love both of them but they went separate ways and different styles. Thanks for that video and the goosebumps provided by Edgar
The bassist is young Tommy Shannon, who became Stevie Ray Vaughn's bassist in Double Trouble. Both brothers are albinos & couldn't go out in the Texas sun, so the parents kept them busy with instruments. I recommend checking both out together & in their seperate bands. Johnny the older brother had a group called Johnny Winter And, Edgar had a couple of groups, one of which is Edgar Winter's White Trash. I saw White Trash (Johnny appeared as a comeo having just got out of drug rehab for a heroin addiction) & they were great. You can't mention either without mentioning Rick Derringer who as a guitarist was used by both brothers.

Love the Winters Brothers, but I'm fairly sure that they were influenced by Muddy Waters and not the other way around, but who knows? maybe they did influence the Mannish Boy.
That sax doesn't even compare to what he does on the song Frankenstein 1973 live! And he goes on to play the drums and that video and a synthesizer keyboard that he actually invented
