The sax player that introduced Jeff is the excellent David Sandborn. You might know him from the iconic sax playing in the soundtrack of the "Lethal Weapon" movies alongside Eric Clapton on guitar and Michael Kamen writing.
When I first saw this performance, I was hoping he would throw Dave a solo. LOL

Both Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jeff Healey earned that move from Jimi Hendrix. Watch him ruin guitarists the world over with his groundbreaking performance of HEY, JOE at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. That moment has defined every young player since. Only Chuck Berry was more persuasive in his artistic influence. You need to watch both. The song Chuck Berry brought to the masses is called JOHNNY B. GOODE.
And yes, Stevie Ray Vaughn helped to disccover Jeff Healey. They play together on a song of Stevie's called LOOK AT LITTLE SISTER. Jeff also has a part in the movie ROADHOUSE with Patrick Swayze and Sam Elliott. And just so you know, on the piano is the late great Dr. John. A New Orleans blues and soul creator as important as gumbo, rice and beans, and Bourbon Street. His was a legend. Enjoy

  • @larryhelmeczy4320
    @larryhelmeczy4320 Před 10 měsíci +1

Didn't have time to read all the comments so I may be redundant. The bass player, Marcus Miller and the drummer Omar Hakim have had fantastic careers in the jazz fusion fields. (also the moderator, Dave Sanborn) The pianist is Dr. John, an icon in N.O. music. So this was an ass kickin' band that supported Jeff well. I wonder how often SRV played with his teeth after that wonderful performance in NJ where he chipped his tooth. The downside of playing those heavy gauge strings, I guess.

I saw Jeff in Germany 🇩🇪 in 1987. There were 8 of us, Army tank commanders, Cavalry scouts etc. We were all stationed nearby Nuremberg. We were privileged to be able to attend many, many concerts all through the 1980s.
Jeff was playing in a large club that happened to have a small concert hall attached to one side of the building. It had 3 levels of balconies and plenty of standing room after all the seats had been filled.
Jeff was sitting to the left hand part of the stage. We were standing about 10 ft. away from Jeff, close enough that he could hear us loud and clear, especially after a song ended! You see, German concert goers aren't a 10th as loud and rambunctious!!
When Jeff was introducing his band mates after a couple songs, he thenked the crowd directly in front then turned in his chair to face us, he pointed and said, "You guys down there are Americans!! I instantly knew you guys were probably G.I.s because yuore the loudest section of this crowd! Thank you for your Service and thank you for coming to the show." Once I came out of shock from being spoken to by one of my guitar heroes...lol...we all turned it up notch! Shoot, even the rest of the crowd started to make more noise! It was an amazing experience to witness this man play his guitar. I tried to play like Jeff once I got home. Complete failure lol

You are always sweet and positive in your reactions, so this is not meant negatively but.
Jeff has all the signs of being blind.
He sits down with a guitar on his lap and who does that? Nobody does.
He never looks at the guitar while playing the guitar.
He moves his head in the same way as Ray Charles and Stevi Wonder while playing the piano. And when he gets up and plays the guitar, he looks for the chair with his hands when he has to sit down again.
The black bass player looks after Jeff as Jeff gets up and steps closer to Jeff so he can support Jeff if needed.
And then finally, on top of all the signs that Jeff is blind, Jeff sings, can you see the light that needs to shine in my eyes.
Strangely, there are a lot of people who react to videos of Jeff on CZcams that overlook all the obvious signs that Jeff is blind.
The question may then be, is it us who are blind and Jeff sees us better than we see ourselves.
How com ve cant se he is blind.

Jeff had already been playing with his band in Toronto 4 years before Albert Collins and SRV jammed with him in a Toronto bar and "discovered" him in 1985. The next year, he jammed with B.B.King, who called Healey's playing the best he had seen. On his second album, he got George Harrison to sing harmony and play acoustic guitar. Another thing that brought him recognition was appearing in the movie Roadhouse. About guitar techniques like playing behind the back or head, or with the teeth, Jimi Hendrix used to do those things in the 60's, but he didn't originate them. Hendrix probably got the teeth thing from Earl Hooker (who he knew) - see the short video of Hooker's "Earl's Blues". Earlier than that, in the late 40's, T-Bone Walker was doing the same things. If you Google his name, and click on "images", you'll see a photo of him playing behind his head while doing the splits. In an interview, Walker said that different guitarists would busk for money on street corners, and whoever had the most impressive tricks would earn the most money. It probably goes back further than that though.

SRV didn't help Jeff. He and Albert Collins discovered Jeff in Toronto during the Jazz Festival. I used to see Jeff perform at various venues in Toronto. After he was discovered, he still hung around the jazz jams. Due to contractual obligations, he couldn't play guitar, so he played cornet. He was just as good on horn as guitar.
He was actually into country music.
FYI he lost his eyes to cancer as a baby.

Yes. He is blind. I've read that blind people have issues reading brail in awkward positions with their fingers. When playing guitar normally the fingertips would be inverted and reversed facing toward you. This supposedly made learning the neck (guitar frets and finger positions) very awkward for Jeff. This position was more natural to him. Not sure of the truth of that but it makes sense.

This is a killer band the line up is like to die for!! In jazz circles they're all legends in their own right including the most sax man David Sanborn. Although Dr John (r.i.p.) didn't exactly play jazz but a mix of many genres and Jeff Healey (r.i.p.) played mostly blues or blues influenced rock. This performance out of this world epic to say the least!! Jeff may have "stolen" the playing-with-the-teeth thing from SRV but i think he in his turn "stole" it from Jimi Hendrix.
