Rules and Explanations
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch.

@@eddierichard1104 Its a fair point. Speed past what you need to outspeed is kinda wasted stats, and most fully evolved pokemon that aren't particularly slow will outspeed thanks to EVs and Badge boost (Even just the standard 12.5%). Does increase crit in gen 1 but it'd be better in special.

@@irurwurst Why? Most animals have better smell than humans, so Pokémon might have better smell than humans too. You can easily fend animals off with sound and smell that humans do not even perceive.

i actually unironically like electrode its designed after the rpg concept of a mimic so its supposed to look like an item and electrode has such a positive personality like it enjoys life
voltorb is irriatable because everyone confuses it for a pokeball, while electrode...that's the best part of its day....because it loves the shock of everyone before it goes boom
Someone smarter than me also made the argument that electrode is based on an electron, but I don't fully remember all of the details of it unfortunately

@@robertbach3592 Well, to be fair, you can't base anything off of how an electron looks because you can't observe them. It's the basis of quantum mechanics. So it's kinda a moot point anyway.

Fun Fun: During the development of gen 1, pokeballs were originally white on the top and red and on the bottom. Electrode and Voltorb already had their current designs by this point, implying the design idea was inverted at that point in dev.
It’s that way in the manga, too. The white part of the Pokeball is actually transparent so the trainer and Pokémon can interact while it’s in it

This was the best run of all time.
I loved the theme of it doing the whole game backwards of a normal pokemon. "It's doing well vs main battles but struggling vs random npcs" was amazing foreshadowing and basically held up the whole run.
I really want to try this run.
I love the "mimic" aspect of the design. Genuinely think it's awesome.
The mimic idea is great, the evolution from voltorb to electrode is where it falls a bit short.
I feel a better design would have been to have the first form be a voltorb and the second form be like the "opened" version of the mimic where you see it's true form. Maybe give it an additionnal type too. Something like grass/electric where you realize the pokeball is host to a mass of vines would be really cool. (or something else really that's just a random idea)
Hey actually fun idea to expand on that, what if you had both tangela and voltorb evolve into electrode, that'd be amusing and you could imagine having them learn different moves early on so depending on which evolution path you chose the movepool you have access to is slightly different. That's something I don't think was explored in the series.
Maybe it's not the best direction to take it, but overall I'm sure there was a way to make more interestiing than "voltorb again, but reversed".
I mean we did already get it's Grass/Electric Hisui form.

In defense of Electrode's and Voltorb's design, I think it's actually a pretty clever one. They're supposed to be Pokémon's take on a mimic or mimik, a very popular mob from the Jrpg genre,which used to be played by most back then. They also look like trap chests that either deal damage and disappear or give you status ailments of some kind (which makes it kind of weird that it doesn't learn Thunder wave)
Well. They blow up on you. So crippling a pokemon sounds pretty dang close.

I like the idea that voltorb and electrode were once regular Pokemon that got fused together with a malfunctioning Pokeball, resulting in an eldritch abomination

I was going to comment on this myself, I'm glad I'm not the only one who realized this! Also of note is that Electrode has the highest base speed in the game, with Voltorb tying high up on the list too, so they're not only likely to move first but are also likely to critically hit. That nearly ensures that players will be punished for their greed, but isn't a guaranteed punishment either. The Voltorb line is legitimately one of the best designed lines in the game.
The fact that Electrode can't learn Body Slam when it starts with Tackle is absolutely smooth brain. Like bruh, Electrode, you are nothing but a body with a face.

That’s not how a body slam works. It’s not like a tackle; it’s picking up someone and dropping/throwing them.
@@jkent9915 Mate just using Ash's pokemon alone. Body Slam involved the Pokemon throwing their whole body at their opponent. Snorlax, Torkoal, Bayleef, and Muk not one of them involve picking up their opponent. And before you begin about this being the games and not the anime. The move animation for Body Slam has always been the pokemon slaming themselves into the opponent, not picking them up. Otherise the animation would've had something similar to Strength or Seismic Toss.
You actually have used toxic in a solo run! The Articuno (and maybe the Alakazam) run against Sabrina. Gosh, I've watched and rewatched all of these so much the past couple years while working out haha.

I did sometimes have months to prepare, and I couldn't find the motivation to start and then suddenly I WAS writing 1 story a day out of necessity... hahaha. So I'm impressed jrose consistently motivated himself to make so many videos without the instant gratification of comments that can often be a big boost. Have a good one!

I appreciate the PSA about the SS Anne not having a healing bed, it's clear lots of us remember that it does, when it doesn't, and in reality it's unnecessary since you can leave the boat and heal, just don't get cut and you can come back.

Yeah but he would've lost half his money. Hm mules aren't allowed to prevent a white out even by just passively exciting in these runs (see one of the earlier videos where he had other Pokemon in his party and called Koga knocking his Pokemon out with self destruct a reason for a reset).

Believe it or not Jrose, your inner monologue and game narration is from my perspective the sole reason you have outshined every other CZcamsr and content creator for me when it comes to Pokemon Content alongside Leonhart and AustinJohnPlays, and you among those two for me are one of the reasons I am most excited about becoming a father. Sharing with them (I PRAY they love Pokemon ;)) you're amazing humour and passion for my 90's nostalgia is my window to teach them how the internet was and is this incredible device created that opened up ways like this to connect people across the world in ways we never realized we could.

17:30 Toxic is very fun to pair with either a Wrap-like move (because it ramps up while they're trapped) or with Leech Seed (because it also increases the numerator of Leech Seed). I do wish there was a Pokemon that could learn all 3.
Toxic was fixed damage in gen1 it didn't ramp till gen 2 or 3

And according to early official artwork, when they explode, they don't actually explode into pieces, they just open up where a Poké Ball would, like how the mouth of the Mimic is where the opening of the chest would be.

I just want to say @jrose11 that Electrode is my most favorite gen 1 pokemon. I know it doesnt mean much cause you’ll eventually get around to probably all 151 Pokémon possibly but I was really waiting for this run.
I always knew as a kid that being the fastest always gave the highest crit% and that it always had sonicboom, swift that never misses, explosion as a fantastic finale move! Thank you so much for continuing what you do!!! Been a fan since the early day and finally am happy for the long wait.
I love how you talk about the little details of the game that keep your Pokémon alive or that help you maximize the Gen 1 quirks with the Pokémon you are using. That is something I look forward to in each of these videos and it's how I personally find these videos very interesting. Keep up the amazing work!
After you mentioned Raichu I started thinking about how that run will go and realized that while it might end up faster than Electrode in the late game, it's gonna have a baaaaaad time against Brock. The only attacking move it learns by level up in Gen 1 is Thundershock, which means you *have* to use Struggle against Brock (since Onix and Geodude are both immune to Thundershock). Once you get past Brock I imagine it'll just be a better Electrode since it has better attack and access to better normal moves near the start (and Thundershock for Misty and the pre-Surge rival battles), but that Brock battle is gonna be an oof.
I'm very curious to see what level it ends up being possible at, because I can't imagine it's any lower than 25 or so. Relying on Struggle is going to make Onix a nightmare (high defense + recoil from Struggle + no other moves to use when Onix uses Bide = bad time for Raichu). You're pretty much guaranteed to take like at least 35 damage from Struggle's recoil alone, and then if Geodude attacks you or Onix uses Bide you're in trouble. Raichu's HP isn't great so I could see that adding up quickly.
EDIT: I just remembered Abra having to do this as well, it got through at 27 with some close calls at slightly lower levels. So maybe Raichu won't be as bad as I thought, it has a much higher attack than Abra does so theoretically it should get through faster, but I imagine the recoil issue and Bide are still going to be a nightmare for a while.

Got some good memories out of Gen 1 Electrode. Should have seen my cousin's face when my stupid ball took his Mewtwo all by itself. Outsped and Thunder Wave'd his fully set up Mewtwo, it couldn't move twice in a row which let me use Substitute to sponge further hits and start using Thunderbolt. Actually managed to get good enough paralysis and crits for Thunderbolt to take it out and Electrode proceeded to blow up his next Pokémon too. It was insanely lucky, but hilarious all the same to see the king of Ubers get dropped by upside down Pokéball of all things.
What I've learnt about Jrose:
"We're gonna lose" means he wins the battle.
"This'll be easy" means he loses.

voltorb and electrode have been my favourite pokémon since forever; only ever being tied by lurantis
i know the voltorb line isnt even particularly good; i dunno if theyre actually "bad' but i just really love them. i started a run of pokémon black recently where i used some stuff to start with two voltorbs instead of a normal starter and sonic boom is so insane early on
i really love the voltorb line though; theyre pokéball mimics which is pretty good as a concept i think; but voltorb is just insanely angry and electrode is like this silly smug upsidedown pokéball. also electrode is like 4 foot tall; which when you think that that means theyre already 4 feet wide maks them really intimidating. especially since according to the pokédex even the slightest bump can cause them to detonate
imagine having a pet/best friend thats just a silly angry smug ball and out on a walk with them and they bump into a lamppost or something and they just instantly level an entire city block. incredible concept

I do like the idea of voltorb and electrode, as they are one of the more thought out concepts of gen one, as they are ment to be mimics.
Pokeball are overworld treasures, so the pokémon are basically fake treasure chests, since they appear in the overworld, looking just like other "treasures".

Also, my thinking is that part of the Mandela Effect happening with the SS Anne is that not only does FRLG add a rest spot to the SS Anne, and if I recall resting is used to advance travel when using the boats in GSC, but more relevant to people used to 1st gen is that they might be misremembering the presence of the beds and rest NPC in Silph Co.
After all, story wise it's very weird that there's be a safe spot to rest up in the middle of an office building, one that's currently in the middle of a hostile takeover at that, whereas the SS Anne is a cruise ship utterly festooned with bedrooms (none of which are usable in 1st-gen). But in gameplay terms it makes more sense, as Silph Co. is overall hostile territory, and the rest spot is placed basically right before the two most pivotal fights in the area. In contrast, it's much easier to take the SS Anne at your own pace and simply slink back out to the pokemon center if needed.
I agree that it's got a lot to do with the Silph Co. resting place that some people misremember it. I've never played FireRed/LeafGreen and hardly remember Silver, but I was fairly sure the SS Anne had a bed or some such as a healing spot.

I love how these runs always spotlight different battles and different parts of battles. In most videos it's gyarados and Aerodactyl that are the things you're really worried about from lance, but this time it was his actual dragons.
