Not to say that you shouldn't use it, I just think it's an overall buff that makes nuzlockes more consistent. Really loving the videos lately, can't wait to see how you tackle the next generations :)

Yeah man, In a normal older gen run with no exp all I’m damn sure not leveling all my Pokémon up. Just too lazy. And it skips the deaths you may get from grinding your moms as well
Rare Candies remove the monotony of grinding while making it easier for most to stick to the rules and not disregard a death because they don’t want to put the time into training another
I find it irritating. Nuzlockes should be slow and methodical. Replacing Pokémon shouldn’t be easy, that’s the whole point. Removing the possibility of dying on a fluke to grass Pokémon is lame. As is the need to want to make a Pokémon challenge run easier. If you don’t want to have to grind to replace Pokémon then don’t let them die.
First off another great vid, the info is so helpful and its entertaining as always. I really see why youre not a nuzlock guy. The point is that you have a random team that you have fun with while increasing the difficulty. But you found some super interesting exploits the same way you do with your other vids like your solo runs. Very Jrose
I am loving this transformation arc of Jrose going from pokemon entertainer to pokemon entertainer AND mentor! The fact that he chose pokemon that could be guaranteed is a really cool thing to do for those who wish to follow up on his run with one of their own and works as an awesome guide. The anecdotes of situations he has encountered as well is a nice touch. I dont know what his ultimate career goals are but I feel like he'd be a great professor. Thanks again for the video!
Definitely prefer the level cap ending at the START of a gym battle, so if I level past the cap DURING the battle, it still is all good and can continue to be used.
I'm glad you don't hack in rare candies. I hate how people act like it's still hard to nuzlocke when you use rare candies. Playing through naturally you'd never have a full team equal to the gym leaders ace. A rare candied level cap actually puts you at a significant advantage over playing normal.
If you’re doing a hardcore nuzlocke especially of a harder romhack, you’re just shooting yourself in the foot if you don’t have a fully leveled team for each bossfight. Candies or no, you’re just playing bad if you go in unprepared and underleveled.
THis is a very different style of nuzlocke video. I think I prefer the ones that tell a story rather than systematically demolish the game format, but this has its place too
Coming here to say I’m loving your nuzlocke series, yeah super hard technical runs are cool every once in a while but if you’re looking up every trainers team in advance what is the point in even playing. Very refreshing my fren keep it up

I have a few variations to nuzlockes that I think are laregly in keeping with the rules and spirit of the run, but one biggie specific to Gen 2 runs: Sacred Ash. As Ho-oh canonically revives the dead, the Sacred Ash is a full resurrection item, usuable on a single Pokemon. As exploits are typically not permitted, there's no duplicating it. It's a get out of jail free card, but it's the only one you get. If you REALLY want to be lore specifc, it may be used on a total of 3, but for the leniency it grants already, restricting it to one seems the most reasonable.
I would love to see future nuzlocke runs from you. It'd be really cool to see you break down your thought processes for difficult trainers like this in other games. There's a whole world of ROM hacks that I think it would be really enjoyable to see you play through that have become challenge runs all by themselves. I don't think that many people on youtube have done these games either. Basically just pChal.
I really appreciate the different pokemon used here and also the under leveling. I would have liked to hear and maybe see more of the failed attempts too but that is maybe out of scope for this video.
The most fun I ever had in a nuzlocke was a hard-core silver trashlocke (any pokemon with over 400 base stats banned). All I can say is thank God for Kadabra
As a tip, because Nuzlockes, even hardcore, are very personal with rulesets. Providing the rules you follow as a document, a comment, or in the description would be very nice, though in theory not necessary, but it may reduce the number of "That's not the way Nuzlockes should be played >:(" comments. I was just thinking that when you mentioned something about level caps that are different from how I've seen (and how I personally play) level caps. Very fun video and I love the idea of needing a new team to accommodate the level caps of Kanto.
Main nuzlocke rules: Any fainted Pokemon is dead Can only catch the first Pokémon on each route with the exception of “species clause” Nicknaming Jrose doesn’t do this one though

One thing that worked for me just trying this now (regardless of starter) is Slowpoke from Slowpoke Well (can get it on any floor) with Curse and a Phys move like Swift. Gets over the 2nd and 3rd gyms
26:38 if you're the type of person to lose mons while grinding, then rare candies aren't meant for you. They are there to save time for careful people, not to protect the careless.
Throughout the year I hardcore nuzlocked most games in the series. Silver was one of the first games I ran, my final team was Typhlosion, Haunter, Quagsire, Machoke, Hypno, and Ampharos. Typhlosion and Ampharos were the only survivors, but I got a shiny Tentacool out of it.
You should do one of these but with randomized encounters. It would be fun seeing it done with no way to plan your team, although this is obviously much more luck based it would still be a fun watch.
You can actually pick up 1 repel in the route before Union cave, and it's not enough to be able to get all the way but it gets you through most of the cave which if you're lucky you can get no encounters and get lapras later
21:32 I've been playing pokemon literally before I could read. My cousin's copy of Blue, my first own game was LeafGreen. This is the first time I heard of this.
Great video once again bud. As a seasoned nuzlocker I do enjoy the old gens being broken down. The ONE thing I will never support is the argument about not using rare candies. The challenge has level caps to ensure you don't over level and RARE CANDIES MAKE YOUR MONS WEAKER ---> you don't grind EVs when you level up with candies. I would never blame you for not agreeing, but it's a fact a lot of people oversee! I'll keep watching regardless. It's fun to see you discover the monstrous world of nuzlocking
A lot of this strategy holds true for HG/SS. I've found it useful to teach geodude rock smash and hope for that 50% chance of a defense drop. It's a nice way of getting past Miltank's milk drink.
I'm wondering if it's viable to save Shadow Ball for Snorlax for late game. He learns it, you can Curse and Rest with a Mint Berry. Just a thought I had while watching. Great work as always!
Alakazam with Psychic & the Elemental punches is definitely OP! I mean your personal fav is a mid-stage evolution & eats Lance for breakfast with this combo...
The fact that you have to grind up 2 separate teams in order to get through the Elite 4 and Kanto makes it hard to imagine a more suboptimal game to Hardcore Nuzlocke.
Me, somehow delightfully surprised every time there’s a new video this month despite that being the whole point of the month: yay, new pongis episode, yay
Geodude/graveler soloes pretty much this entire generation. Chuck and Pryce and Claire are problematic, but one lanturn solves the first 2 (or an electric + flying type, with piloswine taken out by a water type you should have), then the last one can be a battle of attrition if you have your own water type, which you should have multiple because of fishing.
I'm glad to hear about your encounters, like how you wanted a specific pokemon but ended up with Sunkern. Watching other poketubers do Nuzlocke, they seem to suspiciously end up getting every single pokemon they planned for. Hearing you miss out on a pokemon because it just wasn't your encounter makes this so much more believable than others' runs.
Jrose getting "humbled" by a harder nuzlocke and realizing he needs to actually make / follow a plan is the kind of character development I'm here for

THIS IS THE VIDEO I BEEN WAITING FOR
The 2nd half fire type is such a plot twist oh my goodness gracious im so happy
40:18 - EVOLVE THAT PUPPY! Both funny and informative at the same time 😂
21:32 I've been playing pokemon literally before I could read. My cousin's copy of Blue, my first own game was LeafGreen. This is the first time I heard of this.
Absolutely loving the month of Jrose, did you have these videos saved or just an all-time grinder. Either way keep up the great work!
I was a part of this experience Josh. I'm loving the month of Jrose
It's a bad idea to use a level 20 Magikarp. Gyarados learns Bite at level 20. That's a really useful move for Morty.
Hey hey! I watched a week of these attempts on twitch! Thank you for the month of Jrose
Really enjoying the nuzlocke content Jrose! 🙂
You may as well go full gen 2 at that point and have Rest, sleep talk, curse, and return.
Me, somehow delightfully surprised every time there’s a new video this month despite that being the whole point of the month:
yay, new pongis episode, yay
Which runs are you talking about?
