  • I live in Germany. It gets cold. My Tropicals don't enjoy that. At all. Here's how to keep them happy in winter and even get an indoor growing season going. Juicy.

Very helpful video, thank you. I live in US preparing my trees for Winter, can you share what kind of grow light you are using?

This one is a Marshydro SP3000. I have partnered up with them, you can use the code BONSAIFLY for a discount :)

I see you got an SP3000 :) It amuzed me when I saw your video title since I was also preparing a vid related to overwintering space :)
Does that bark in the boxes help creating a humid environment?

I do. I also got two TS 1000, but I am not going to use them this winter. Electricity is crazy expensive right now.
It does. More importantly though, if you don’t have any substrate at the bottom of the box, water will accumulate and you’ll get root rot. Plus it starts smelling nasty. The bark isn’t even the best substrate to do this with though, it was just what I had at hand. An anorganic substrate would be better (like expanded clay). Bark can still get mold. If that happens I might have to change it

@@Bonsaifly From my experiments, the grow light doesn't consume as much as you would expect. In my case, in the tent, I only use it at 50%. The power draw is similar to having a TV on. Sure, in the end even a bit more will increase the bill :)
I expect that the bark will eventually start to break down if it is kept constantly wet.

@@OddBonsai yeah I saw your video on that, great work. Yeah, maybe I’ll squeeze in an hour or two per day for the trees :)
Yeah true. Though mine isn’t constantly wet, I make sure to let fresh air in and I don’t water as excessively as I would outside. Since there is always some humidity from below I don’t need to. At least that’s what worked last year :)

@@Bonsaifly Sounds good. It's a nice setup and I'm sure your trees will be happy until spring. :)
