Many bodybuilders know they need to have "good nutrition" to build a great physique but they are not quite sure where to start as nutrition seems complicated and mysterious -- its not! Bodybuilding nutrition is really quite simple if you use a top-down approach. A lot of the confusion people have is that they hear "you should do this" and "you should do that" only to find that all the advice seems to conflict and doesn't seem to fit into a bigger picture. here I'm going to give you the bigger picture so YOU can put together your OWN nutritional plan to meet your goals.
A bodybuilders nutritional plan is very similar to a personal financial budget. Both are about making difficult choices and then sticking to the budget -- in both cases, disaster strikes if you blow the budget. If you blow your financial budget, you end up over your head in 21% credit card debt. If you blow your nutritional budget you end up fat or weak.
In a financial plan you start with your income and then subtract out the nonnegotiable expenses like taxes and rent to find out how much spending money we have. For our nutritional plan we start with amount of calories we can eat per day, then subtract out the things we need for lean muscle growth then see how many cheat foods we can have. Lets look at how easy the top down approach to bodybuilding nutritional planning is. - Jak na to + styl
@masterpiecebeta I try to speak slowly and clearly because I know a lot of my viewers speak English as a second language. Talking fast, mumbling, and using lots of non standard slang makes it very difficult to jnderstand. I spent 2 years in Germany so I learned to really appreciate those who spoke clearly.
Great job Scoob! Thanks for your approaches. You make things simple.
Thank you for this video! I have started working out, and I have been stressing badly over my diet for muscle gains. I am a numbers guy, so I took your approach. After breaking down everything I eat this way, I saw I could meet my Macro goals with only a little tweaking of my current meals.
Thank you Scoob! I've been a "fan"\"follower" and I have enjoyed your videos consistently for more than a year. They keep me motivated and keep me trying harder. I'll admit that hard times can and do push me off track, but I'm always coming back and the information you're bringing forward is both accurate (I'm a doctor) and convincing. This was a great video.
Thank you so much.
This makes perfect sense when you think about it. Cheers, Scoobs!
Because people keep asking about me, I updated the "About Me" page on my website and added a lot more photos and info ...
I have stayed with you for 2 years now, and I am going to stay with ya as long as you keep putting up vids my freind! YOU have given me alot of encouragement to keep going! You are da bomb bud!
dude..scoobs..im so happy someone is offering me a no bs approach. i pretty much only watch your vids when it comes to health because youre the only one whos not trying to dig into my pockets. thanks again
really pissed that I had that Asian fraud as the ad prior to your video. yay spot fat removal!
absoulutely great video...its nice to hear info from someone who isnt trying to sell you something and tells you good info. keep it up scooby love the vids man
Thanks for the video Scooby! I've been trying to try to get a meal plan worked out as well as an exercise plan. Keep up the great work!
Keep of the good work, Scooby, there are not enough genuine people like you giving advice. Thanks.
You are correct, I have used them as I just commented below. They ROCK for keeping track of what you eat.
Scooby! thank you soo much for explaining how to calculate the percentage of macros to calories that you will need in a day, ive never known how to do it and have mostly been doing guess work. Keep making your videos! I love the amount of work that you put into each video in order to help others get the best results they can get :)
Great video Scooby! Love the breakdown and the step by step nutritional budget!
i just want to say thanks scooby for this video. I was finding it very confusing with this macros thing but now it all makes sense.
That's a really smart way of looking at it! Way to go scooby love ur vids
yep,i follow the clean bulking plan...his advice on anything always work for me..thank god this man decided to help us.
Scooby's right! English is my second language and the way he speaks helps a lot!
Thanks again for all the free information and for all the fitness tools that we can find on your website. Wish you the best!
Hey Scooby, havnt seen your videos for a while cause i was busy but i just saw that you finished your triathlon and i really wanted to congratulate you! Excellent time, mate!
i like what you do scooby you give us no bullshit. Even though i dont watch much of your videos anymore i used to watch them almost every day when i first started this fitness journey. thank you
Hey Scoob, thanks again for another great vid, nutrition has always been my uphill battle and thanks to these vids i've been winning recently. you're an inspiration and looking lean as ever, and I'd like to point out that your left shoulder looks great. I know you had the surgery a while back and was unable to do much with it, but it looks awesome now. Thanks for the inspiration, i hope i can send you a success story real soon, i'm getting real close :)
@Athrun000 It appears that unfortunately you didnt watch this video or you would know that nothing here talks about meal frequency or number of meals. This video is purely about deciding how to do a daily nutritional budget. It also appears that you missed the fact that I do mention egg consumption in this sample meal plan. Its fine as long as its not more than 5% of your calories.
I just foud your videos ! Man, you are an awesome guy ! I love your videos. You seem to be a honest and dedicated man, not a hormone chocked bodybuilder . I subscribed and I am sold out. Keep it up scoob ! Amazing work !
Thanks Scooby. Third week into the advanced workout plan. Has been great so far!
Scooby! You must be a mind reader!! ...every topic about fitness or nutrition that I've had recently, you have answered with even being asked! You do a great job man, thanks for all of the work!
I really appreciate the amount of time you put into each video as opposed to blasting up 10 videos a day like some other fitness channels. Thanks!
This guy knows what hes talking about, props scooby, love your stuff man. keep doing it.
Sorry, I did misunderstand. Yes, I completely agree. Applications like "Lose It!" and myfnesspal are awesome at tracking the nutrition of what you eat. You can set your targets like I show in this video and let the application do all the dreary math. Lose It even has a barcode scanner so that you can scan food and find it in their database.
Hey man. This is a great video ! I've been watching you for a while and you know your stuff.
Dieting is something that's extremely underrated by the people training, not just in body building, but in other sports as well. I'm an amateur boxer and I didn't understood proper nutrition nor did I have the will to go through a good diet so I ended up competing at heavyweight which is not very fun, believe me. Now I diet correctly (in most part) and am glad to be back at light heavyweight.
No but thanks for the compliment! Remember, haters will hate. If they can't think of any good arguments they resort to character assignation.
I am not saying ANYTHING about how much I think you should eat. Step 2 is where YOU decide if you run a caloric deficit or surplus and how much. This is YOUR nutritional plan, not mine. The only thing I warn against (the zone in red) is that a caloric deficit of more than 20% risks burning muscle.
Simple yet so obviously brilliant now you mention it. Thanks man!
Exactly! If you are going to spend 5hrs a week lifting weights then surely you can spare a few minutes to make a nutritional plan!
keep up the good work Scooby.
Regards from Romania !
That video just gives you options for quick and easy meals for those who complain that they "cant eat healthy meals", its not a complete nutritional plan. Follow this video, its a whole, complete nutritional plan for bodybuilders.
Thanks, people have mentioned this in the last two weeks its only now that I have gotten around to looking into it. I will figure out how to get them back online. Thanks!
Well done, Scooby. Very well presented and instructive. Thanks for the post!
Good quetsion! After you do this a week or so, you can stop because its an educational exercise. Once you see HOW, WHAT, and HOW MUCH to eat you dont need to keep doing this. After the first week of weighing, measuring, and counting you will have it down. That first week, an appliction like Lose It or myfitnesspal makes the macro counting easy.
@HevyAccel, remember what I said at the beginning of this video that there is a lot of conflicting info out there? Well yours is a perfect example! No more protein isnt always better, its stops being any advantage after about 1g/ lb/day
thanks a lot scooby sir, this is the video that what i am and probably most of yours follower are looking for. actually i was thinking to ask these in askscooby forum but meanwhile these information came which really helped beyond my expectation because i was only going to ask how to manage that 1gm of protein per pound of body weight but it contents more than that.if you are seeing this scooby, once more, a heartly welcome for your dear services.
People write entire books on nutrition. Getting it to fit into one 8 minute video IS making it simple :)
No calorie calculator is accurate unless you calibrate it. If you use my "accurate calorie calculator" (google that phrase) you can do a calibration procedure that makes it as accurate as a lab test which costs thousands of dollars.
Even though personally i am too advanced(already know all this) for the information in this video however, i really appreciate your approach to topics like this and how you break it down to those who need to know this stuff. A role model indeed.Respect
the greatest video I have ever seen !! Keep up, Scooby !!
Thank you! This is fantastic Scoob!!!!!!
Thanks scooby! I have been watching your videos since I started lifting in 2010. I took a 3 year break in 2013 and am now back in 2016. Now that I have actually applied some discipline and your fitness advice, I easily surpassed my previous weight which was 162lbs max back in 2013. I am now 183lbs from 142lbs in january 2016, hit 183 last month. (I lost a lot of weight during the 3 year break with my ex girlfriend). Anyway, thank you for your videos! Keep them coming! Also ignore the haters as you already know, people like Go zDog just hate for no reason.
this is something that I definately needed, nutrition is something I struggle to get a grip of, thanks :)
Scooby is one of most Clear and clean English speakers I,ve ever seen ...seriously
Wow, i've never seen somebody so interested on helping people, THANK YOU SCOOBY :)
thanks scooby! you are the man for making all these videos...FOR NO COST! unbelieveable! thank you very much sir for sharing!
Post Christmas holidays is a great time to start a good nutrition pledge! :)
Scooby, your calorie calculator is great. Thank you so much.
Doing legumes and grains for most of your protein (say 50-70%) and then just supplementing that with meat, chicken, or fish is great. Much cheaper, just as effective, and healthier in my opinion.
Dude, I think you are great! Many thanks for your videos.
great video scooby keep it up! im making great gains thanks to your nutrition and training videos
I would suggest a 5-10% caloric deficit so you can add muscle while losing fat - this will work if you are a beginner or intermediate BBer
Scooby, this was a great video. Thank you for posting.
Yes, will do an IF video ... Remember though, I tell you what you NEED to hear, not what you WANT to hear
Nutrition takes the most dedication for me. I wish it was as easy as just going to the gym, getting my lifts and basketball time in, and leaving the gym. If it worked that way, then I would be shredded lol. Nice vid Scooby. I always show your videos to my friends when I am trying to make a point.
Great Video!! Thanks Scooby!!!
You really must think of nutrition as a budget. So many people dont understand this important concept. Unless you are dirty bulking (not recommended), you cannot eat whatever you want.
I really enjoy your videos Scooby, never stop making them. I am a big fan of yours and you seem so kind! you would make a nice training-partner
@HevyAccel, there is no way to download this as I havent enabled that feature. I cant possibly think of any way to download it ;)
This is a nutritional budget, I said nothing at all in this video about number of meals or when to eat them. Intentionally so.
This is awesome, thanks Scooby!
This was the most helpful nutritional video for me! Thank u all your work my master! :D (AND NO ASSLICKING JUST PURE RESPECT!!!)
Thank you Scooby for great info and great presentation!!
New subscriber, loving the info Scooby!
I for one have tried out the suggested meals and the calorie calculator and let me tell you something - the math involved is 7th grade at most (i work part time as a math teacher) and eating & training the way scooby says really works! Try it out instead of complaining, it's easyer than it looks and leaves you feeling awesome!
Scooby has taught me so much more about nutrition and exercise than school. He's my hero!
That's the video I needed. Thanks!
I agree with you. Excess calories of any sort (carbs, protein, or fat) all get stored as FAT.
You will note that I didnt talk at all about when to eat and how often to eat - all I talked about in this video is WHAT to eat and how much to eat.
awesome info as always Scooby.
If you are bulking you STILL need to do this to procedure. Many who dirty bulk don't get enough protein and are starved of vitamins.
Its so much to take in at once...but ill get it sooner or later. Thanks scooby.
Great video man, thanks!
I'm humbled, good job!! I am incredibly happy to have helped.
I am working on a blog posting about intermittent fasting, will be out in the next week.
thanks for the compliment!!! :)
Scooby congrats on your channel, i've been working out for 10 years and I must say your videos are a great source of unbiased info.
I wanted to ask: do you follow a fixed diet? Do you eat the healthy meals you preach?
I'm a committed bodybuilder... but.. I'm from Italy and I love proper food...
No I havent changed my opinion of bulking and cutting. I still think its a mistake for beginners to do and of marginal benefit for intermediates. I acknowledge that there are many different nutritional techniques and I wanted this video to be appropriate for all of them even if I personally dont like them.
can't wait. Its been the topic for the last month on youtube this IF
Excellent video...very clear. Thank you
Thank you for the motivation, Scooby.) In Russia Christmas is yet to come, it is very cold, but I try to eat healthy and train and my body is grateful, Grateful Alive, not Dead.)
Now this is very instructive! Thanks
Hey Scooby! First, thx for all you do! You are a great help to everyone into fitness. My question is, my main goal for fitness is to have the energy get through my day without feeling worn out at the end. I play drums on a professional level (hours a day of physical activity), for at a sub shop, and take summer college courses. Would weightlifting and cardio be the right type of exercise for me or should I be doing stuff like high repetition pushups, etc. along with cardio?
Great advice! Thanks for the upload
This video IS very important and unfortunately because its not something that people want to hear, most will ignore my advice. What people WANT to hear is that you can get big muscles fast by just working out like a fiend and taking supplement X.
Damn Scooby, great video quality.
which videos cant you view??? If you give me a list I will track the problem down!
You are welcome!!!
You are quite welcome!!
Thanks for taking the time to comment, but I have heard conflicting reports on alcohol's effect on muscle building/athletes and I would have to conclude from the overall evidence that alcohol has very little effect in small quantities, but you are absolutely right that drinking no alcohol at all will be much better. Still, I drank 1/3rd bottle of rum and a litre of beer on Saturday, and have seen "gains" and lost fat - I guess I could have done a LOT better without that though.
PILLOW SCREAM! This nutritional stuff is NOT just for people who want to compete. Its for all you folks out there who CLAIM you are hardgainers with slow metabolisms to explain why you cant gain muscle or get abs. There are no SHORTCUTS. If you want to gain hard, lean muscle you gotta WORK at it.
If it fits into your nutritional plan that you make with the method in this video then your daily 330ml bottle of beer is fine. In realistic terms that means that if you are at more than a 10% caloric deficit then you cant have it. If you are from0-10% caloric deficit you can probably have the beer as long as you are strict about almost everything else.
really nice video! now i understand a lot more
Great, great job! I use your calculators and I am very satisfied with the results. Nick from Greece.
Ok so scooby, ive seen your videos since 2009, honestly I wanted to give up at first, my diet sucked, my workout was shit as well, now... wow I'm way stronger, lookin better and so on. Gonna keep myself up! thanks for all tips you have given away and when I'm at your age, I wanna look like you... havin a body of a 20 year old haha :D
