    This is a great idea for re-staining a piece of furniture without stripping. Sometimes, I just don't want to take the time to strip a piece because it is a long process. Can't wait to see the entire project. Thanks for a great video and great information.

    Hey Jenni, Just happened upon your channel! It's great. A few questions please? Can you use gel stain for this project? Can you put a java gel stain over a cherry wood finish after you rough up the top coat? Also, when can you use beeswax? It seems to give furniture such a nice finish. Can you use it on a furniture project like this after you've applied a gel stain (or water base if necessary) I like working with gels stains but have done only small items. Thank you!

      I have similar question. Does water base stain penitrate various finishes varnish, polyurethane etc. I've read to can apply accectone in a very small spot. If it dissolves the finish its varnish or shellac, if it doesn't it's a polyurethane finish. So which type of stain then do apply? Oil or water based?

    I’m trying to darken a cabinet from dark brown to an espresso finish. Do I need to strip the finish first? Or can I just sand lightly and apply an espresso stain?
    If so, use stain or finish? It’s for inside and it’s currently not shiny. Won’t laquer make it shiny?

    Would you recommend this technique to change the wood tone of kitchen cabinets? I may wind up just painting them, but as an option, it might also be nice if I could just neutralize their orangey undertone a smidge.

    Good evening. I have a beautiful charcoal gray wooden dining table that was damage by an oil spill, an Air Wick oil spill, that left two big rings and a few spots on it..the oil ate away at the color, turning it back to its natural brown. Can this be fixed by staining or should I just replace the table? I just bought it in November and I really Love it. Literally heartbroken but I'm hopeful this will recover it. Please Help!

    I have an old oak table that has a veneer or laminate top. I tried GF gel stain but it would not stick, would the water base stain work? I’m tempted just to milk paint it because nothing else seems to work. Any suggestions?

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  Před 5 lety

      The water based may work. I would give it a really good scuffing with 120 grit sandpaper - really scratch it up, then see if it will stick!!

    • @RootsWingsHome

      No, unfortunately you can only do this to go darker. You can use a white wash to lighten a color, but that will probably not be the look you would be going for.

    This is very helpful! I have an additional question which I’ve been wondering about... in the market these days there are stain+polyurethane combo products which is like a one-step application. I have tried that on my coffee table and it worked great since I was making the table into a darker finish. My question is, have you tried mixing a water based stain with water based polyurethane to create such a combo and do all the staining and finishing work in one step itself? Thank you for all the helpful videos that you make!!

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  Před 5 lety +1

      Yes! You can also do that - I actually did it on a set of chairs (here's the post: rootsandwingsfurniture.com/blog/woodtoning/) this can be streaky depending on the surface, so you usually have to do more than one coat!

    Can you refinish kitchen cabinets without stripping?
    For example, I want to redo my kitchen but I don't know what the cabinets are made of (they are really old and crappy) but I want to chalk paint and distress. And do you have a brand you'd recommend. I am testing out Rust-Oleum but I am not sure if it's working or if I am doing it right (I am a newbie to this). Help!!

    I am in need of some advice. I have an old church pew, less than perfect, but I love the age showing through but does need some new stain. I have watched your video using gel stain and water based stain, both over existing stained furniture. How do I know which is best for my piece?

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  Před 4 lety +1

      Either would work. I have switched over almost entirely to water based stain as I feel like it does the same thing but dries quicker and is safer to work with! I think I'd go with water based in your case as well because it won't cover so much of the old character like the gel stain would!

    Hello, I am from Canada and we are unable to purchase General Finishes here so we drove to the States and bought some to redo my diningroom table which I am pretty sure is veneer bought from a big box furniture store. I purchased the oil based gel stain in Java. Was this the wrong product to use as I see from the comments you are recommending water based. Can I still use the one I purchased. I will sand with 220 grit to get a good base. Thank you for your videos really enjoy each and everyone of them

    Will the sanding between topcoats affect this method of stain application or should I sand as normal?

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  Před 4 lety

      As long as you are just sanding VERY LIGHTLY you will not affect the stain. If you get a little aggressive, the water based stain can sometimes be easy to sand through.
