1) Use paint stripper, with natural bristle disposable brush
2) Use putty knife (rounded corners) & scrape off old finish into box
3) Medium coarse steel wool removes finish from rounded edge
4) Liquid stripper applied liberally with a brush
5) Medium/fine steel wool with long straight passes
6) Use a lacquer thinner brushed on
7) Use fine steel wool for final cleaning
8) Sanding (used finishing sander with 220 grit sandpaper)
9) Apply stain of choice with rag or brush (brush preferred) applied in the direction of grain
10) Wipe off excess with rag. Let dry for 24 hours
11) For top coat, use Polyurethane semi-gloss (stir before using)
12) Wipe table before applying
13) Use natural bristle brush to apply (high quality brush is best)
14) Apply 3 coats & sand lightly in between
15) Apply paste finishing wax with pad of 0000 steel wool
Thank you Chad. This is useful.
Thanks Chad:)
I'm confused because at the 6:34 minute mark, he said he was using a semi-gloss polyurethane and then at 7:24 he said he's using a satin finish polyurethane. Which one do you suppose is accurate?
@@rachelh5211 looked like he ended up using a satin finish 👍
can’t u just start with sander??
what a wholesome dude
lol
The Bob Ross of home improvements
For anyone on the fence about following this, I HIGHLY recommend it. I did my 20+ yr old table that my dad had made and I was so afraid to mess it up, but I followed this exactly and it looks brand new, with a nice hard finish! It looks almost better than the day it was brought in the house the first time ❤ so thank you so much for the detailed steps!
I DIDN'T KNOW RON HAD PASSED AWAY, SORRY FOR THE LOSS VERY TALENTED MAN LIKED BY EVERYONE, RIP
Oh my goodness I didn't know
So sad to read Ron has passed away.
Such a kind, talented, and giving individual.
RIP......
That spilled milk bit at the end was gold!
The grainy video and cheese if fun sound effects had me thinking this was from the early 2000's. Then I saw the amazon box and was like "what?" and was SO SUPRISED to see that this video was posted in 2020 lol
A
Not sure what you’re talking about. It looked fine to me.
I was so confused when I saw he was using an Amazon box to wipe the scrapper off on 😂
The first guys of home improvements. Ron and Bob Villa. I use to watch these shows when I was in my twenties. I am almost 60 now! I need to finish some new pieces for my new house. This was the only video that gave me start to finish the correct way to complete this project. Thanks. Love you guys!
I like the little banjo diddly for the paint stripper being poured at 1:20
Really triggered all the mandolinists in the world with this comment
@@ahern112 I am a triggered mandolinist right now! haha
Thanks for this video. I replayed every step as I was working on my table. I love the results. New dining set for under $100.
I was curious about the prices. I was thinking that it could be cheaper to buy a used table in good condition than buy all materials needed for the job
GET TF OUT that's unheard of
I did exactly what you said, omg thanks it was so easy, found a real wood dining table in my alley, yesterday's trash is now my prize treasure!
that's amazing! I can't believe the quality of things that people just throw away sometimes!
Trash is Cash LoL.
That’s the best price to get antiques for. And surprisingly, many of those freebies end up coming out gorgeous with a little repair first and then patience during the refinishing procedure!
Go Crystal. You ma the old saying, one man's trash is another one's treasure and you found a treasure. 😉
Mixing stains like you would paint shades seems so obvious, but I never thought of it. Nice!
Even though this video is old, I still wanted to leave a comment. You did a good job describing and explaining everything in a clear, concise manner, totally absent of unnecessary and self-serving commentary. Well done. I do, however, have to say that I instantly heard the (trombone?) tune that "The Price Is Right" uses when a contestant fails at the delivery of your punchline at the end lol.
Whether it be House Calls or history Channel hands on history he hosted always great shows . A local TV station has a half hour episode 4 a.m. every Saturday. The network ABC I figure broadcasts it .they adjusted the intro since he passed away.
When Ron says sand lightly, sand lightly-Just enough to get the rogue bubbles out. (220 grit).
Also I used the Paste Finishing Wax (Natural color), I haven’t used it before but will from now on. The shine doesn’t fade, it just gets better!
Thanks Mr. Ron!!! My table looks great!
Can you manually sand it?
Yes I wish he had footage/details of that. I find sanding between clear coats (on wood or car paint) to be by far the most nerve-wracking proposition. You have so much material and time in by then, it would be a travesty to eff it all up on that step.
@@roddydykes7053what grit sandpaper between layers of poly? 800?
Great, helpful video!! Thank you!
You really have a gift for explaining. Thank you for such an amazing video.
Thanks Ron now I want a gigantic plate of fresh brownies 🍫🍰🤤😄💕👍
that's my exact dining room table - from Oak Express circa 1998. I still love it. While not in as bad shape as this one was, I need to refinish it too. What a perfect tutorial for my specific needs!
Those little riffs between scenes really give me the good vibes
Ron did the work. Oliver stole the show haha. Great job sir.
Whats funny to me is that i needed to refinish a table my mom just picked up today, hence doing a little more research (i have wood working experience but never had to refinish anything) and the table in this video is almost exactly the same as the table she got from an old friend today. The design (minus a few little details) is the same. This was the first video i clicked on too. Thats the best coincidence since i can follow the video exactly.
Just refinished my great-grandma’s table thanks to this video. Much appreciated Ron!
I wish Ron was my neighbor😅🙏🏻 beautiful job!
he passed away this april
@@higherpower254 Awww. That is terrible news. He must be missed🙏🏻
Great video! Any chance of a product list being made available?
It is a complete luxury experience to watch this video on my sofa with a cup of hot tea in 2021.
Your videos are great. The only thing I would expect is the description of materials used in a little more detail so that I know what exactly you are using.
Thank you for the video.
Thanks for the great instructional video. I am going to refinish an oak antique kitchen table.
Off to pick up some paint remover, check stain colours and some polyurethane.
What a craftsman!
This is exactly what my table needs! Thank you! I'm going to try my best!
Did you get a chance to refinish your table?.
I'm curious, how did it turn out for you?.
I can imagine it looks amazing!!
Love the trousers
My first time undertaking a refinishing project was a table similar to this. Thanks to this clear presentation it was a success!
I need to do this to my coffee table so bad! Thank you!
Super video. ❤
Oh my! I’m over awed. But it’s so much work
Great video, I wish I could hire someone to do this.
Well that's a five star video I really liked it thank you
Great step by step especially the part matching the original color. Thank you!
That table looks so beautiful!!
I've never refinished furniture before, but I've been needing to do my other dining room table. That's what lead me to this video.
I wrote everything down on paper, and going to try my very best to follow his directions through the whole process! I know my first time won't be perfect, but it will be fun to do it!!.
Thank you for this great video!!
I love the style of this video
All you videos are over tge top Ron. The spilled milk was an Academy Award moment. Lol
Wow, I followed your instructions and the results are awesome.
Great video! Love the detailed explanations.
Hi Ron , wow that was a really nice job that you did on refinishing that table !!! 👍😊
Outstanding work as always.
Thank you very much for your easy to follow instructions. We refinished our oak dinning table and came out beautifully. God bless you.
Always a great time watching Ron. Thanks for the video, keep it up👍
Old oak table here, looking fairly old with cup marks etc, time to follow your excellent guide and having it looking like new again
Thank you for the outstanding video! I have a solid oak table that needs a good makeover. Now I feel confident I can do the job! Thank you sir!❤️
You blow my mind Ron, that top turned out beautiful, oak is such a nice wood to work on, and that finish was exquisite. Thank you!
Purdy Brushes are the best!!!
Thanks!
Ive always loved Ron!
Such beautiful work
That was so satisfying to watch. The paint removal part was like visual ASMR:)
Absolutely Beautiful 😍
Learned something new, never used the wax paste ...
Beautiful. Great instructions. Maybe I’ll attempt to do my kitchen table. It looks terrible.
That was the most cheesy line at the end but it worked
Love your video. I can tell your love for the work
Excellent! Just what we were looking for!!
Thank you. Very educational and simple to understand and follow.
Thanks for sharing, Ron!!!
Cozy! I´d like that Brownie recipe!
Beautiful work
thanks for the video! Followed your tutorial for my table and it came out great
Beautiful!!!!
Superb
I loved this so much!!!!
Superb! Thank you.
That was awesome nice job
that turned out so good great job Ron
Thank you so much
this is so wholesome
Looks great
10/10 Ron. Really exceptional.
Ron, u r the master! 👍
amazing job, well done
Doe anyone else notice that Ron say's he is using a Semi Gloss Polyurethane when he is mixing it and then he says it is a Satin Polyurethane when he applies it?
Very, very nice job, I have to do this to our kitchen table, you make it look so easy!
Feel like I can smell this video, and it smells great
Yeah me too. I think its his aftershave. Smells very manly
@@youremybiggestfan 😂😂
Wonderful video, well made and informative. I'm going to be redoing my grandparents 30+ year old oak table that I inherited. Wish me luck! You definitely earned a subscriber for this 😊
Thanks for the video.
Ohhh you've done a lovely job on that
Dad joke at the end was spectacular 🤣🤣
Ron I really liked the video especially dulling the edges of the putty knife. Shows your mastery
Thank you
Nice job👍
thanks. ill be doing this in the next few weeks.
Does the topcoat used have to be oil based polyurethane? Or can one use Minwax Polycrylic which is water based. I prefer the matte finish it comes in. Would it be a consideration of the amount of daily use on this question? Thanks for any feedback.
Wow!
Thank you.
Beautiful job Ron, thanks for sharing.
🤜🤛Oi" Ron 😄😄 amazing👏👏👏
Awesome
Well done thanks
thumbs up for the spilled milk line
Good wholesome video
Beautiful. Wish I were so talented.
🏡 Ron,
You make all of us feel capable and so proud to have such a talented wood craftsman and someone who can actually " tell us the products we need to get the wood finish we want ". Your videos & audios are perfection.
Don' you just love what Special Walnut by minwax can do blended with other stains ?
Also , Thank You for your special instructions about eg: using seperate containers instead of
" dipping in & out of the can" , proper brushes ,
Your a Great Instructor .1 last question Sir . How long did it take actually ) minus cams , setups and all ) ?
I have the exact same dilemma. Only, I live in a retirement community and there's no one who will make my table beautiful again.
What were the two removers that you used?
