    I SO love those little guys, they are truly a gardener's best friend!!!
    First year we bought our house we had an INSANE slug and earwig infestation that destroyed our gardens and flower beds... following summer (I guess we were more slack with the leaves piling in some corners than then previous owners had) these little guys start popping up all over the place. Years later we still have not had any bug problems. Now I purposely keep some sections of our yard inviting for shrews, especially around my orchard, garden and flower beds. They keep everything safe from both bugs AND rodents (they actually kill and eat mice), and don't even touch our crops since they favor protein packed foods...its truly fantastic! There's no longer any mice in our walls and attic either since these guys have taken over the area!!!
    Not to mention, its always cute to see their little noses poking from under dead leaves when I'm gardening lol.

      @@justacatwhocantype Indeed. These are actually super pests here. They were introduced here to rid our trees of an infestation of spruce budworms and became a bigger problem. We introduced snakes to manage the shrew problem... the snakes couldn't survive the cold and died... shrews are now everywhere... and infested with ticks and worms and carry diseases. I had to remove one from my home once and while happy and alive, it literally stank of rot. This video one is cute for sure but this is not the norm for this animal.

      They’re monsters. The only venomous mammal in North America, they are vicious creatures capable of killing and eating even snakes. As well, they are impossible to keep as pets unless you get extremely lucky (as this woman did) and find them as babies, as they will can’t acclimate to human contact, once feral they will always be feral, and are incapable of having affection for us. And they have vicious front teeth, similar to a rat’s.
      They look cute and fluffy from a glance but trust me they are anything but. Horrible pests.

    Shrews are interesting lil' creatures. When I became aware of them as a young child (after being shown one, they live in the backyard sometimes) I was a little bit scared of them just because my mom warned me about their bites and stuff, so I guess I saw them as strange mysterious baby-rat-mimic lookin' (I had rats as a lil kiddo) creatures who I should never touch. I've long since become more familiar with them, so they're not as much like vemon-faeries anymore. It's nice I can admire them from a respectful distance (I mean, I ain't gonna go out somewhere and poke 'em) anytime I want via photos and vids, they're cool lil' weirdos.
    My family once had a dog who got bit by 'em on a few occasions. She was a large dog, a newfoundland, but the venom could certainly leave a sore. I don't know HOW she accomplished this, she must have somehow laid/rolled onto one. More than once. She... uh... wasn't the smartest of dogs.

      Here's another one, this one I learned more recently. When ya look at shrew teeth and see they're partly reddish (which is present in some shrews, like short-tailed shrews), that's actually from traces of iron, which is in the enamel where the teeth would be enduring the most use. They're animals that have to eat a lot, so those teeth gotta last.

      They must have been walking and just enjoying the scenery, if you're not in a hurry too much you catch things like that. Once leaving a college class I had to wait for a ride home from my dad and I was just looking around enjoying the desert, and found a hummingbird ina puddle struggling to fly, so I found a little bird shelter and turned it in, just gotta be in the right place right time and aware of your surroundings. Once in high school I found a little mouse in our gym locker room so I moved it outside, everyone else was just too busy to notice it, and I also look down a lot because I like finding things or seeing little bugs and creatures so it's a habitual thing, too.

We stopped and found out it was a young vole wondered away from the nest 🙄 and we couldnt find such nest anywhere so guess who had to bring home a baby vole and hand raise it 🤣

    I'd be concerned that she didn't get any instruction from a parent shrew on how to survive in the wild, such as avoiding becoming a meal for a predator.

    • @joshuarosen6242
      @joshuarosen6242 Před 3 lety +8

      Shrews aren’t especially clever. They largely know what to do by instinct, not by being taught by their parents. Shrews also have a short lifespan - typically less than 12 months so she was old enough to be released. There is no reason to believe that she would be any more likely to be eaten than any other shrew and her survival prospects at 4 weeks were almost certainly much better than they were at birth.
