I would highly recommend picking up a copy of the "Upanishads"....the philosophy is multilayered, deep and lofty. I was born into it and was a closet agnostic but after a bit of study I am a fan and think its the only one that well and truly explains the nature of our reality and most aligned with our current understanding of the science that deals with it - i.e. quantum physics.

Father of Shiva is Brahma , Father of Brahma is Vishnu , and father of Vishnu is Shiva . so Shiva is everything. it is eternal. as you can see that is is circle of Shiva , Vishnu and Brahma is a circle. so in a sense all are same without any starting point or any end. Take in any order Shiva is his own grandfather. So Shiva is supreme in Shiva Purana and Vishnu is supreme in Vishnu Purana. so it really does not matter who is supreme and who is not.

Excellent presentation on Shaivism. Dr. Sutton is a real scholar. I agree with most of the things he said about Tamil Shaivites. I am one of them
In Hindu temples in Tamil Nadu, the Vaishnava priests (iyengars)normally would not do any service to Nataraja (Shiva) but the smarta brahmin priests ( Iyer) would not mind doing pujas to any deity in the temple. The Smarta tradition rejects theistic sectarianism.
I also agree with Dr.Sutton that in Noth India people are not familiar with Shaivism as in South India. Of course, the Kashi Vishwanath temple is an exception. There are more temples for Shiva in South India than any other part of India. Shaivism is not that popular in North India for whatever reason, Islamic invasion or something else. In early 7th century the Chinese Buddhist pilgrim Xuanzang (Huen Tsang) visited India and wrote a memoir in Chinese that mentions the prevalence of Shiva temples all over North Indian subcontinent, including in the Hindu Kush region such as Nurista.

For all the followers of Hindu teachings and philosophy and for the world....worship of God in the form of Brahma and Vishnu can only bring you worldly benefits...knowledge and wealth. Only Shiva as supreme can give liberation to the soul. Wealth and knowledge all bring delusion and finally the soul will have to seek its liberation . Do not be tied down by form and name...God is beyond all that. The lessons of all Hindu teachings is to finally worship Shiva...the master of your soul.

    Many arguing here r Silly.
What they don't understand or realise it, is that it's the Brahman who is the One ultimate atma among whom we all reside .
🔖But Hindus have various denominations. Its Vaishnavism, Shaivism, Shaktism, Shaktism etc.
*** Depending upon which one you are following, the Brahman is defined selectively.
    Brahman becomes Vishnu in Vaishnavism.
    Shiva in Shaivism.
Kali or Durga in Shaktism. Etc.

You will never get anywhere near Hinduism by mere reading the scriptures; you may even get confused instead of getting any clarity! Three minimum steps are prescribed to conduct your spiritual journey: (i) "sravana", i.e., hearing or studying coupled with assimilation of spiritual truths; (ii) manana, i.e., critical evaluation of what is heard, which is a mental process; and (iii) nididhyaasana (dhyaana), i.e., deep contemplation or, say, meditation. These three are indispensable steps. Once you take your first step, all blessings will come from within, and also the strength needed to take future steps!! There is no such thing as "ENLIGHTENMENT WITHIN A WEEK", which is being offered by some QUACKS in USA and a few Western countries.

I don't think there exists in Hinduism anymore "tension" on accunt of the competing concepts of worship around Shiva and Vishnu. Now the Saivites and Vaishnavitesn Tamilnadu have come to bury their old hatchets, and united to believe in the oneness of God in the Hindu Triumvirates - Brahma-Vishnu and Shiva. I have visited several temples of Trimurthis, and Shankaranarayana in the South india.

great lecture , most of us ( hindus) forget great traditions of vedic school of thought preached in upanishads, and agmas great works by religious teachers from kashmir to kanyakumari ( like , lakulisa, somanada, utpaladeva, adi shankara , vidyaranya, abhinava guptha, basavanna, mekandwar, thirumalar and many more, sri kanta )
now most of us believe hinduisam is only myth like ( puranas) and history of ramayana and bharatam
there are 208 saiva agamas and 108 shakthi thantras most of them lost in the destruction of universities like nalanda and taxila by muslims . now science and scholars across the world is looking to hinduisam and praising it only by the study of great works in kashmiri saivam and pasupatha saivam and other great agamas
university of pondicherry is now collecting all the works of great saints from Nepal , India and from Bhutan
i hope in future we again got our lost knowledge and think beyond myth and ithihasa understand true philosophy of upanishads as ( aham brahmasmi, tatwam asi, ayam atma brahma, sivam santam advaitam) and lead the world in to peace

      Mahopanishad is not Mukhya
      Vedas declare
Eko hi rudra na dvitiya kaschit
"Rudra is the sole One, there is no second"- Taittiriya Sanhita 1.8.6
      Also,
Mahopanishad verse was quoted and refuted by Sri Srikantha Sivacharya in his Brahma Sutra Bhashya

Shiva and Shivani are represented in the form of two inverted triangles as in Abrahamic religion. Adi Sankara describes Shivani as sitting on Shiva seat in soundarya Laharj ( Shivakare Manche Parama Siva paryanka Nilayam). This is nothing but two dimensional form of Shiva Linga.
This form also refers to represent tetrahedron (fire) and octahedron ( air ) as per Plato ‘s two of panchabhuta. After a while water pot is kept above linga to represent water. The linga is installed on earth. A hole is made on Gopuram to represent sky directly. Thus Shiva is known as Bhutanatha.

Every thing came from VEDA. Veda is 100% science, history etc etc. In it you can see all the subjects that we studies in any University. [ Including method of manufacture of rocket, structure of atom, structure of Universe etc]. All the Nobel prizes were given to those subjects which were given in Vedas. It is not easy for common man to follow science. So they wrote it in story form in Puranasa. Thus science terms in Vedas, become characters in Puranas. Here RUDRA in VEDA, became SIVA in Puranas. WE are now going behind these stories and its characters.
I wrote 12 books named Kaliyugapuranam which explains VEDA PURANOPANISHEDS mostly on the basis of modern science. Publishing or revealing such things to the world is not easy for a single person.
Dear Friends, Don't go behind these stories and its characters. These are STORIES. It is a story form of presentation of Science, history etc etc in VEDAS. The scientific world is misguided by Indian Vedic teachers who taught foreign scholars. Behind these stories there is may science principles. These are not SPIRITUAL THINGS. Those who failed to understand these things, covered all these by the blanket of SPIRITUALITY.

What is there in the book was gain through mind and dyan. Book is there for those mind that struggle and to guide them ,but it's not necessary to be followed. You can also do that on your own like rishi's has done. Remember the eklavya story he didn't have a guru who guided him, it was his determination, hardwork, and devotion.

Shiva in Upanishads mean Ultimate truth or Bliss. The Shaivism is offspring of this to common man in Pauranik who finds it difficult to understand the philosophical stand point.
For Advait Vedantic Vishnu and Shiva are they all are same, but different manifestations.
Its like looking at same elephant from different angles.

There are roughly equal situations where either Lord Vishnu or Lord Siva are extrolled as the one supreme deity if we consider all Scriptures
That said, Lord Siva/ Rudra is arguably the older God
Vaishnava puranas also treats Siva as a partial but important expansion of Vishnu
    Similar to the Saivaite puranas

Have just started listening, also seen many comments here. My humble take on exclusively saivism followers in tamilnadu: it's true that smarthas (iyers) worship vishnu as well, but they do identify themselves as predominantly shiva followers thru how they adorn their forehead: with a vibhuti pattai rather than a thirumann naamam. If this be accepted as membership of saivism, I would bet they easily outnumber vaishnavites. The point being, how the murthi's of siva and vishnu themselves are depicted, is how the devotee identifies himself.

    • @AnanthNat
      @AnanthNat Před 4 lety

Again, as someone mentioned, the saivism vaisnavism divides are nothing like Catholic protestant divide. Most followers of Hinduism accept that god is one, but simply choose to worship in a form which has been traditionally followed by their ancestors.
