  • My starter quit working on my TDI. So, I made this video to show, step by step, how to do a starter replacement for yourself.
    The plastic engine cover, battery & battery tray have to be removed to make it easier to reach the starter. I test the voltage coming from the key. The space is tight and I show the removal and installing of the starter the best I can.
    I hope this helps you understand what's involved in this job to decide if you want to tackle it yourself and that you have the tools needed. The starter for a manual transmission is different than the one for an automatic transmission. Make sure you get the correct one for your car.

    Thanks. I had done the job in the past but it's nice to have this resource to refresh and clarify the process. Knowing beforehand what sizes the bolts/nuts/studs are is a nice advantage, too.

    How would I go about replacing the starter connector wire that leads right above the negative terminal on the starter? Snapped. Rotted.

    • @ZeroFuelRequired
      @ZeroFuelRequired  Před 3 lety +1

      Probably best bet is to go to a junkyard and buy the entire wiring harness. Or maybe a junk yard will sell just the cut off section with the wires & connector you need so you can install them by cutting off your bad section and crimp connector installation of the new piece. Hope this helps.

      If you are referring to top starter bolts, these are what you're looking for. When you go on the link at the top you can put your year, make and model to verify fitment. I'm pretty sure they are the same from 1999- 2012
      www.idparts.com/starter-bolts-pair-manual-n91042601-n91004101-p-6175.html
      Also, if you don't want to wait for shipping, you could call around to local junk yards to see if they have them. Either way, I hope this helps. Thanks for the question.

    • @ZeroFuelRequired
      @ZeroFuelRequired  Před 2 lety +1

      I made the video 4 years ago and the starter is still going strong. I tell people buy parts like starter and alternators from a local autoparts store just to make it easier on yourself if you have to return it for warranty replacement. I like buying new over buying remanufactured starters and alternators. They just seem to last longer and have less chance of problems. Thank you for the question.

      The 1.8, 1.9 and 2.0 are very similar to replace. I'm am not to sure about the v6 engine. The starter can be different between automatic and manual transmission. So make sure you specify when purchasing a new starter. I hope this helps and thanks for your question.

      @@LightWaIker I think it is effective. Take it off start the car and listen how loud the engine noise is without it hood open or closed and take it for a drive. The thing that amazes me is if you've ever taken the splash pan off underneath its loaded with little square boxes that are sound deadening. Drive with the top engine cover and splash pan off and it's pretty loud. You'll think you're driving a Ford 7.3L lol. I have a friend that has a new TDI you can't hardly hear running. It's gotta have a ton of sound deadening in it.
