I will NEVER OWN an Inkjet Printer, at least that is what I thought. I have been very outspoken for years about printing at home and how it could not match a "real" print. Well, the time has come and my eyes have been opened by the Canon Pixma Pro 10 inkjet printer.
When Canon asked me if I would like to review the Pixma Pro 10 I said sure as long as you send me enough ink and paper for me to properly run some real world tests. I was always under the impression that the ink was way to expensive and in combination with purchasing paper I should just order prints online. No its not all roses and butterflies for inkjet printers but I will break it down for you in this full in-depth review.
First things first lets take a look at the costs involved with owning this inkjet printer. The printer itself will run you $700 at most retailers including Allens Camera. You have to ask yourself how many prints could I make for $700 at a lab? Other costs involved include the ink which runs $14.99 ea and you will need 10 cartridges to keep this bad boy up and running. (the printer comes with a full set up ink right out of the box)
You also have to take into consideration what inkjet paper you are going to purchase along with what size. There are a lot of companies that makes inkjet paper but for this review I used just the Canon Pro Luster 13x19 inch. The Pixma Pro 10 can print paper up to 13x19 inches full bleed. That means it will use the entire paper surface and not leave a white border. Since I do not crop my work I only printed 12x18 sized images on the 13x19 sheet of paper.

I am not sure if I mentioned the Black and Whites from this printer but they are FANTASTIC!!!! The PRINTS from the PIXMA are so much better then anything coming from the lab. The Blacks POP so much and I am in LOVE with them.

The PRo 10 has a common error for the rear slot that prevents the printer from working. Canon has ignored this problem and it is expensive to repair. These great reviews are from people that used it for a few days. The users that have had the printer for a few months and longer know that the printer is one that should not be recommended/purchased.

Hi Jared. Thanks for the time that you put into creating your content. It seems as though you have a great crew, a nice studio, and a high morale work environment.
As for the printing at home vs. a lab of sorts, I can't really make a fair comparison. But I do own the Epson Surecolor P800 inkjet printer, and it definitely has it's ups and downs.
The bad is that the ink is so expensive for this machine that Epson should be ashamed of themselves. Depending on the media you are choosing to print on, it's usually expensive up to very expensive. It is a wider format printer though just to be fair to the printer.
The good is that it's a wireless controlled printer, which is a function that I rarely use, but can be very convenient. Also, with this model I was able to purchase an accessory that allows me to print from a roll of media. The best part about the roll media is that it is such huge bang for your buck in comparison to purchasing pre-cut sheets. And the best part for sure, is that it's fun. It can be very expensive, but it's just very cool to watch your print being produced. I'm sure that labs do a wonderful job, but to me it just feels more of a complete product in which I created from start to finish. Sort of a sense of pride, and definitely a feeling of accomplishment.
As for the expense of the ink, once the new excitement of having the machine and printing every singe photo has worn off, I have learned which type of media will require more ink and it has helped me learn to choose what I will print, or not print, in a more knowledgeable manner. I have been interested in the Canon Pro 100 printer, so if one of those ends up by your door. Please give it a review, then forward it on to my house. Ya, that would be cool. Thanks Jared!

I picked up this beauty for $320 unopened box on CL including 50 sheets of 13x19 paper. I couldn't not buy it. The wireless was super easy, you just need to tell it your network key but it does have to be on USB for the initial setup. It does tell you that.
Truly fantastic results and I think this steps up my game as far as control of my work and turn around time delivering to my clients.
It's probably a bit much for where I am in my business starting up but that price made it an no-brainer.
Thanks for the review. Made me very comfortable to purchase as I have never liked ink jet for printing either.

Those color differences can be compensated for by doing some proofing , eg either by proofing to your screen, or having multiple lab printers, then proofing to them. I usually like gradient proofing, then saving the adjustment layers as a macro. It is a subtle change but you can make them pretty much exactly the same if you want.

great video even though I'm coming here 7 years later after it was made hahaha another thing to factor in is the type of paper being used not all lustre coated paper are the same in how they absorb the ink and that does take time, effort, and money to dial in what you're looking for, but worth it when you're taking your prints seriously.

      @connieandstewart Před 4 lety

Oscar Hernandez hahahaha! Right?! We were a little worried about buyers remorse because the printer is so old - what if something new comes out?! I guess that’s the prograf 1000 but that’s nearly double the price even after rebates. I’m pretty happy with the pro10. It does the job well and really comes down to what papers you use as long as you don’t cut corners and keep using OE ink. I would say 8/10 satisfied with the pro 10. 1 star off because i do wish now that i could print at home 17x22 size prints and 1 more point off because even though the cartridges are pricier, 80ml ink tanks for each ink would be nice compared to 10ml tank capacity of the pro10 inks.
      So far I think we’ve printed well over 100x 4x6”, 30-40x 8.5x11”, 5-7 11x17”, and 12 13x19”.
With those prints, If i can recall correctly, i believe we’ve replaced all the inks once and just about to replace 3-4 more inks for the second time (chroma optimizer coat goes the fastest and that is one of the 3-4 inks that we are looking to replace for the second time now).

The costs are comparable, but only if you can guarantee the first print you make is going to be fine. The reality is, when cartridge ink levels start getting low, even before you see a warning, you often see some print defects which are only curable by replacing the cartridge that is getting low. It's funny how you often only see the low level warning pop up after it's printed!. By this time, you have used more ink of other colors, it ends up in the bin! The other reality is, there is always the chance you print something only to realize there was something wrong with a setting so you waste a print. My advice would be (unless cost is not an issue), find a printing service you know you can trust and make sure your monitor is giving you the most accurate visual experience as possible. That way you can be confident what you see on the screen is pretty much what you will receive from the service.
Having said that, there is nothing quite as exciting as watching your work reveal itself from the printer's rollers!

  • @HCkev

Would be interesting to have a comparison between Dye ink prints and pigment ink prints - Like a Pro 10 VS Pro 100 comparison. At the studio I work we have a Pixma Pro 9000 Mark II, which has been replaced by the Pro 100, which is similar to the Pro 10 but use dye inks instead of pigments. We're always wondering if we should have taken pigments instead of dye inks. That being said, we're not disappointed by the quality of the prints.

Color calibration is super important if you are doing your own prints. Look into it. You don't want a photo that "kinda" looks different and you just so happen to like the saturation. This is your work and you want it at the top of its game. You want what you see on the screen to be accurate and have the confidence that that's what you are going to see on paper. It's not about "oh wow, I kinda like this look". Know what you are doing and do the best you can with the tools you have.

you can buy 200ml refill bottles on ebay for around $100 that's 40 refills each color. The refill ink prints look exactly the same as the original cartridges. You also need a cartridge reset tool that's around $30. But then its very cheap to print all you want. I have this setup and it works great pretty much just the cost of paper now ink price is so low really with this setup its only $2.50 per cartridge.

Jared, I know this review is a few years old, but I just purchased a Pro 10. My question when reviewing the prints to compare them to the lab print, what would have happened if you used more than one lab to print? Would you see similar differences between lab "A" and lab "B"?

I have the same setup you mention here. I've not been happy with the results and I'm sure it has to do with my settings. If you could expand on the settings and where I'd find them, that'd be great. My print d photos are not what I'm seeing on the screen.

I have the Canon Pixma Pro 100. I gave up on Epson because it always keeps getting clogged print heads. I don't seem to get that on the Canon Pixma.

You bring in an objective party, then when he asserts his opinion and easily identifies the inkjet prints, you start saying how subtle the differences are and steering the discussion to the conclusion you've already come to: that you like the Canon prints. Of course, as with any printing process, if you want the absolute best results you'd do test prints just like in the old days of C-printing or B&W basement darkrooms, and color cast issues can easily be managed.

Maybe you or someone who knows about this can help me out here.
I would like to get a printer for Christmas. The one I have been looking at is the Canon PIXMA iX6850. It prints at a size that I like and for what I want to do with it the price is very reasonable.
But here's the question, is it worth it?

Any panel whether it was calibrated or not shifts in color over time. Slightly every month so it's always a good idea to calibrate your monitor often if you do professional work.

    Hi Jared,
I am looking at Canon vs Epson for pro printing. Are you printing directly from lightroom or another software? Looking to set up a mobile studio at events. Great video, keep it coming. Sajeev from London. Thanks

First of all I liked the video and appreciate some well made points. However, do you notice the green and red reflections from your lights? Both of you are commenting about the overcast green and I'm sitting here cracking up. It's better than the comedy show. Regardless, the video was helpful to me.

I'd say another advantage with using an inkjet printer is that you have full creative control over the final product and can totally trust that no one else has influenced it.
