  • Starting a new run and I'll be doing it as... MEXICO! Objectives are to avoid revolutions, grow the economy, and to avoid being steamrollered by the USA. How well do I do in the age of the Oligarchy?
    I keep my mod list in the #victoria3 channel on my Discord, I'll be updating it soon to include this one.

    Being in a customs union should help Mexico industrialize faster as long as you concentrate on logging and mining production. Steel, tools, locomotives and war materials can be supplied by the senior partner for years and should provide a good source of regular migration (I strategy I call "Welcome to Mexico! Here's your axe and pick!"). Once you get higher relations you should be able to get a defensive pact and then you could exit the customs union and replace it with a trade agreement. Russia might also be good CU to join as they may provide greater migration.

      Already we're making money from iron and wood production. Gold mining doesn't hurt, either. :-)

    If you use the Enlistment decree, the number of conscripts you can raise from each state drastically increases.

    • @An_Economist_Plays
      @An_Economist_Plays  Před 2 měsíci +4

      True. But I do not seeing it getting anywhere close to the number of soldiers the USA could raise. The solution I think will not be a military one, but a diplomatic one.

      @@An_Economist_Plays Very likely true. Another benefit though is that the AI uses your conscript count in calculating military strength. Although that is a bit cheesy.

    Hello!
    It's good to see people caring about Mexican history, and that is something I like, but I need to make some clarifications on the matter:
    1. While it's true that the 19th Century was mostly a conflict between Liberals and Conservatives, other actors played along the way, especially monarchists. That said, both "parties" were not unified on their goals and idea of how Mexico should be. In fact, in some cases, they agreed on same positions. Most liberals during the first two decades of Independent Mexico were not socially progressive, and, in fact, they supported things like census suffrage (if they were not able to implement it, and instead went for universal male suffrage, was because there was no consensus over how much suffrage needed to be restricted). Liberals in general were neutral or against indigenous peoples in the country, considering them barbaric and uncivilized. Conservatives, while advocating for the status-quo sometimes, were ironically supportive of protecting the natives, either because of opportunism to have supporters, or for actual ideological convictions.
    2. While it's true that by the start of 1836 Mexico is officially a Centralist government, modern texts argue that, in reality, Mexican Centralism was "never truly" Centralist, and, in fact, Mexican provinces/departments during the Siete Leyes Constitution had some sort of autonomy. The Mexican centralists were actually trying to fix the problems of excessive federalism established in the Constitution of 1824 (which was sometimes directly confederal), not to completely eliminate federalism and/or autonomy.
    3. Juárez, while generally a patriotic president and politically successful, was not necessarily a "protector of the voiceless", especially considering the first (recorded) workers'/labourers' rebellion in Mexico was under his government, and he repressed violently such revolt. And that's ignoring the situation of the natives.
    Good playthrough!

      As always in Mexican history, there are shades and tones on the colors we choose to paint with in broad strokes. :-) But the history is such that we don't try to argue away the difficult bits. We take them in stride, know that we are dealing with the history of human beings, and move forward with further study and research that reveals further shades and tones.

    As Mexico, your professional army can be a point of leverage against the USA. You can have a much higher quality army than their conscripts and if you get skirmish infantry and stay on the defensive, your can survive long enough for a white peace. Build gold mines and barracks and if you build enough barracks, France might even be okay with a Defensive Pace.

    Yes! Finally a new series
    And thanks for the playlists as well.
    For 1.6 it would be awesome to see a Spain series, that focuses on rebuilding its old empire with Isabella and how the new mechanics (when 1.6 is out) influences that.
    For this series maybe a nice goal would be to unite the Americans?

    • @An_Economist_Plays

      My plan for the next DLC will be to play first as the USA, as I am reading much on US history right now to make ready for that game. But... it *will* likely unite the Americas.
      My issue with Spain doing the uniting is that I play with a mod that invokes the Monroe Doctrine, which was worded to prevent the return of monarchism to the Americas. Don't know if Spain could get strong enough to go mano-a-mano with the USA in a war.

    I've been anxiously awaiting this new series and you're off to a good start. I really enjoyed your discussion of demagogues and how they thrive by creating chaos (often by creating conflict between different groups in society) and oppose cooperation and compromise. Sadly demagogues seem to be on the rise around the world these days and few people seem to recognize the danger of ignoring the lessons of the past.
    I was surprised when you showed the decrees you had on Mexico City. They looked much more powerful and numerous then the vanilla decrees and are 1/3 the cost. Does the AI make use of the same decrees in a sensible fashion? I'm not familiar with the mod you are using for this, but unless the AI understands how to use them properly it gives the player a significant advantage. I'm fine with that if you do it for story telling purposes but it does mean that people who may try to replicate your achievements would have a hard time doing so without the decrees.

    • @An_Economist_Plays
      @An_Economist_Plays  Před 2 měsíci

      So I have that one mod, but the "Rule by Decree" happened somehow, I don't remember clicking it, and that made them even more cheaper than before. But the Caudillismo "Rule by Decree" is very powerful and Mexico starts with LOTS of authority.

    As someone who’s done a Mexico run before, in my experience joining a customs union is your only realistic hope of getting a great power to sign a defensive pact with you. Which tbh is realistic imo why else would the Europeans be willing to anger the US on your behalf? And from a Mexican perspective it’s not that bad. Your economy will be extremely distorted to whatever France needs but it’ll give you a market for goods and once you have the population and military to stand up for yourself you can negotiate an exit and try to export and import your way to success

    • @An_Economist_Plays
      @An_Economist_Plays  Před 2 měsíci +2

      That looks to be the way I want to go. And if I'm not chasing great power-hood, there's no rush to the exit doors from the customs union. And it beats having to do a massive EU4 run to make a more muscular Mexico in 1836. :-D

    • @abdulpadela4738
      @abdulpadela4738 Před 2 měsíci +3

      @@An_Economist_Plays just because you’re in a customs union doesn’t mean you have to stop aiming for great power status it just delays things a little bit
      Also I don’t think it’s impossible to go it alone, Mexico’s gold mines means it can punch above its weight and afford a larger army than normally would be possible but it would mean sacrificing every other part of your society to do so. You’d have to do nothing but massive barracks build up and maybe take a break to build gold mines

    There should be a desire of characters to keep or improve their personal power, even if i don't agree with the "great men theory" i do believe that that desire is a small factor in the advancement of history and it should be reflected in something more that what traits they have.
