The Evidence That The Lost City of Atlantis Existed?

- I was lost, then I was found, you might hear some of the wonders of the world say if they could speak. We might look at perhaps the best known once-lost city in Machu Picchu, that was abandoned in the 16th century and discovered again in the 20th century. Then you have the spellbinding city of Angkor in Cambodia, which was never really lost, but certainly needed a lot of restoration for it to look as magnificent as it does today. We also have cities that are perhaps only legends, El Dorado, The Lost City of Gold; or The Lost City of Z, whose mystery lured explorers from Europe… and some never returned home. But today we’ll talk about perhaps greatest legend of them all, in this episode of the Infographics Show, The Evidence That The lost city of Atlantis Existed.
If we want to know the origins of the city of Atlantis we have to go back to the great, Greek ancient philosopher known as Plato. You’ve probably heard of the guy. Some writers have said all philosophy is just a footnote to Plato, while he’s the man that wrote the Socratic dialogues; he came up with The Cave allegory we still talk about today and he advanced ideas on justice, law, and learning that we all should be thankful for. With that in mind, if Plato was the one that started the story of Atlantis, perhaps we should take him seriously?
Well, while there are still people that believe Atlantis was real, most others, tell us Plato told that tale as an allegory, meaning the story had a hidden meaning in it. Plato said in 360 B.C. that these Atlanteans had a pretty good life. No doubt if such a thing existed back then, Atlantis would have come very high in standard of living indexes. The people that lived there were human, but also God-like, according to Plato. Where the island is, is actually widely debated, with some saying that the island, and surrounding islands, were just somewhere in the Mediterranean, and others saying near Spain, in the Pacific, the Caribbean or even close to Antarctica. The place is described as having one main island, with smaller islands surrounding it. It was a wonderful spot, too, where exotic wildlife not seen anywhere else wandered around, and where precious metals were plentiful. It was said living there was a Utopian existence, before Sir Thomas More wrote his book 'Utopia’ in 1516 and we started using that word to mean the apogee of human civilization. You get the picture, Atlantis was supposed to be perfect in every way. No one messed with the Atlanteans, either, because they had an impenetrable navy.

Just have to point out that while Plato was known to write some aligorical tales, he made a point to say as much either in the title or in the "prologue" of the "book". And at the beginning of the take of Atlantis he states that it is a true story. Not sure if I believe it is for sure the location, but the eye of the Sahara is a likely location for Atlantis.

Alright, this is an old video, but hear me out. Near the island of Sardinia, Italy, there are underwater ruins of buildings from thousands of years ago. They were also somewhat advanced for their age. There were also signs of volcanic rock and ash burying the buildings deeper underwater, so I and many others speculate that Atlantis was in Sardinia! Also, to drive my point, the ancient Sardinians were already somewhat advanced early on in human culture.

But both words have the same origin the Titan god, Atlas who was doomed to carry the heavens or the sky.

I learned in school that Plato had a source for his stories. He talked to a man in Egypt who's name I now have forgotten, but it was some kind of priest who told him about Atlantis. It was said to have happened 10 000 years before that which had to be around the time of the flood. It's true there must be something behind that flood. There's proof of it when you look at the sphinx, which has traces of erosion.
Learning something from school means completely nothing on topics like this. If half the people in the world believed in Atlantis being a real place at one point then that means there is a 50% shot you were told about it from someone that wants you to think the same thing. Plato was able to leave traces of his writing for us to read about it today. But the rest of the population back then had no idea about Atlantis because you would think that the knowledge of a place that large would have more stories about it through time.

Just because the Sphinx has traces of erosion does not mean it was caused by the Great Flood, there are thousands of other ways the Sphinx could have been eroded, from human interaction, to weather, to literally the passage of time causes things to erode. I was really looking forward to watching this video, then suddenly my mind was shut off and all I could hear was muurrr muurrr muurrr muurrr. Because something deep inside of my soul truly believes that Atlantis really did and still does exist, within our DNA. I love every theory and story that people come up with Atlantis because over all, there's still that belief system whether someone believes it or not, you still talk about it whether it matters or not, whether it be an opinion or not. Although it would be so awesome that Atlantis would be real, it is clear based on the lack of scientific evidence that backs up your argument. We need to make sure we look at the reality of the facts presented to us rather than pseudoarcheology. They are great theories though I agree with that!

Jordy 54 that’s at least that’s the story he wrote yes. And according to him, Solon learned of it through the Egyptians. Not siding with or against you, but it is possible he could’ve made it up, seeing as they stated much of what he and other philosophers write is purely allegorical. It is also possible it was written in some ancient Egyptian texts that have been lost somewhere to time.

I’ve discussed myths before. Atlantis is always thrown into the ring at one point or another. Perhaps Plato not only meant Atlantis to be an allegory for “pride before the fall”, but for an Utopia humanity will never reach (and/or keep). Humans will always ruin something, that’s a proven fact (forgive my generalizations) that history has demonstrated several times over. Rome, Greece, Egypt- once great cultures that were devastated by humanity (with nature helping). This isn’t me saying that Atlantis as a lost city doesn’t exist, because this godforsaken Earth of ours keeps spitting out the impossible it seems.

But apart from that, Plutarch also mentions Atlantis quite a bit. As Atlantis was also know as Ogygia, it is even mentioned by Homer.

I think I'll chime in and ask why you didn't speak of the Eye of the Sahara. Everything matches up there, and it's the best theory I've seen so far.
Guys if you want to see where Atlantis really is then look up the Eye of the Sahara or the Richard structure, it's barely talked about and geologists are confused about its origin as its far too unusual to be natural. It's strikingly similar to how Plato described Atlantis, the circular islands with the nearby mountains and the whole area looks like it was hit by a tsunami. Not to mention a few of human artifacts have been discovered there but it's never been excavated. Whether it's truly Atlantis is up for speculation but if you don't believe me then look it up.
I still feel as though there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding this claim. However, the similarities are interesting.

The eye of the Sahara is the most likely location I’ve heard of, but at the very least it’s an area worth looking at regardless of whether you’re searching for a specific lost city, it’s so perfectly symmetrical which implies it could be remnants of something man made. Hopefully there’s a rich person out there that’ll one day fund something like that, it’s a shame money is such a barrier when trying to learn about the past.
Hi there, the Eye is not perfectly symmetrical at ground level. Only from space does it look smooth and symmetrical. It is in fact a large geological rock formation (not man made) with no evidence of human cities within (only visits by local Hunter gatherer tribes). There’s no evidence Plato would have even known it existed. He likely made up Atlantis, or was thinking of Greek or other eastern Mediterranean cities that had been destroyed in the past or his own lifetime.

It did exist. Everything was beautiful, pretty, amazing. Clean af. You could stair at the buildings for hours. Another level of elegance. Love filled the streets, honor was a constant, new ideas were welcomed embraced and used to the good of all the people. Until like the guy said, they started delving into another dimension. They grew tired of the peace, the calm, and wanted something new. The problem was their way of being gave them powers. They were super humans. So when they tried different emotions, it impacted them very badly. Even more so cause they’re higher way of thinking. It destroyed them. A dark flood consumed them all. Or did it? They’re might still be survivors. Of course the survivors cross bread with the regular humans.
But seriously folks...the most probable explanation is that Plato was referring (perhaps to some extent metaphorically) to the Thera (Santorini) eruption, which in fact did reign significant destruction on Mediterranean civilization. Of course, that happened much more recently than the time cited by Plato. But since he may have received the story from Egyptian historians, the possibility exists that he misinterpreted the date by a factor of ten, thus positing Atlantean civilization as having existed thousands of years earlier. That's my best guess.
