  • In this video I compare and contrast the Trek Marlin lineup with the Specialized Rockhopper lineup and the Giant Talon lineup. These are all entry level mountain bikes from 3 large bicycle brands, so I go over what makes them similar and different from one another, to hopefully help you figure out which bike or brand is the best for you! I also compare the Trek Marlin 6, Specialized Rockhopper Sport, and the Giant Talon 2 as an example of what changes between these bikes.

    Updates/Corrections to video:
    1) For the frame geometry, I accidentally swapped the bike names and images. The measurements are correct as stated in the video, but the order of the bikes in my geometry table should be, from left to right: Trek Marlin, Specialized Rockhopper, and then Giant Talon. Sorry about that error!
    2) All of the Specialized Rockhopper models have increased in price by $100, so the Rockhopper Sport now costs $700
    3) The Marlin 6 actually uses 100mm of travel in its size small as well, and only uses 80mm of travel for the xs size.

I can only agree with what KK has written, I only discovered your videos by chance. I am looking to buy an entry level hardtail and then fit a Bafang 1000kw Mid-Drive ,hopefully the bottom bracket on the bike I choose will be a ‘straight-through ‘ with no complications.
Your videos are extremely good, simple and informative to a novice that wants to get into MB but only wants to bike British roads and off -road fire-tracks.Covid has given me more time to study this but there are so many videos it gets confusing to try and make a final decision, but I think yours will help me more than any others. Great video! I've been bikepacking for 8 years and evolved a Boardman 27.5 hardtail. I like the straight handlebar, front suspension and wider tyres, hence gravel bike is a non starter. The Boardman is now worn out and I've upgraded to the Talon. With tubolito inners, weight is less than 13kg. I've added seat post suspension for further comfort. Never got on with 29 for bikepacking and gearing with the single chain ring is actually ideal.

Just bought my very first mtb the Talon 2 a couple days ago. I was looking for the Marlin 6 but at this point of the year most of the local bike shops here are out of stock. But luck have served me well and I found an XS Talon 2 (which is perfect for my size) for roughly below 500$ (converted to USD) and it had the UK groupset components. Looking at the price range, for me I struck a great deal! Thank you for these types of videos! It's a pain to look through their websites for hours for their comparisons. Also, let me know which parts should I uprgade first.

honestly for me, looks wise it has to be Trek Marlin, but specialized and trek are hard to find in my country, so giant is most likely the best option

If you are intending to have bike for more than 5 years and going to ride bike, the best bike shop in a Trek bike shop and what they sell is the best bike, sometimes other brands too. Usually they offer free tune ups

I just bought the talon 2 on 12/31/21 and prices have increased dramatically. I paid $818 OTD. This inflation is killing us. My talon 2 Comes with ardent tires which I guess is tubeless ready!!!

I cant seem to find any basic bike size guides for a xc setup, just ordered a Talon 3 29er size Large frame (following the company guidelines for height) but it turned out HUGE, have about 1 inch space between topbar and crutch while standing on ground. Any recommendations for what I should consider for simple beginner bike fit?

I got the marlin 6 here in Phoenix, AZ. I wanted the marlin 7 but the availability right now is not there. Even the marlin 6 was hard to find. I called atleast 10 stores and finally landis cyclery had it lol.

Yeah I remember calling stores every single day hoping they'd eventually get one in stock. Times are tough right now :(

The Talon 2 is certainly the best "trail" bike here. It's 1-by and geo are more trail oriented, but the brakes are not. I take mine down black and double black diamonds, something I would not do on my friend's old 2-by Marlin 7. However, if you want to tackle the big stuff, upgrade the brakes. I've had more than a few near misses due to lack of stopping power, and my shop did not even install the front caliper properly, so watch out for that.

At around 5 mins 20 seconds you correctly state the head tube angles of the bikes but your graphic chart has them wrong. Cool video. I would love to see a video comparing the Rockhopper Elite to the other comparable bikes. It would be a cool sub $1000 bikes video.

Thanks for pointing that out! I'll add an update comment right now; can't believe I mixed that one up! And noted; I'll look into a video like that as well since a few people have asked about it.
