- In this video I compare and contrast the Trek Marlin lineup with the Specialized Rockhopper lineup and the Giant Talon lineup. These are all entry level mountain bikes from 3 large bicycle brands, so I go over what makes them similar and different from one another, to hopefully help you figure out which bike or brand is the best for you! I also compare the Trek Marlin 6, Specialized Rockhopper Sport, and the Giant Talon 2 as an example of what changes between these bikes.

Updates/Corrections to video:
1) For the frame geometry, I accidentally swapped the bike names and images. The measurements are correct as stated in the video, but the order of the bikes in my geometry table should be, from left to right: Trek Marlin, Specialized Rockhopper, and then Giant Talon. Sorry about that error!
2) All of the Specialized Rockhopper models have increased in price by $100, so the Rockhopper Sport now costs $700
3) The Marlin 6 actually uses 100mm of travel in its size small as well, and only uses 80mm of travel for the xs size.
I’m really confused about the geometry part. I have one question. What bike is best for defending and ruffer trails.
Next time take care before posting...Yours channel is great for authentic information. Thanks dude..
Can you do a new one with 2022 marlin 6 vs vitus nucleus vr 29
Whoa! This guy is superhuman. He corrects himself. Incredible!
Great video, I’m in Ecuador and the talon 0 sells for $1000 the rockhopper expert $1500 and the trek marlin 8 $1300, which one will you choose?
This is the best bike content on CZcams. No nonsense, no bs.
Thanks!!
Not had a mountain bike in many years and watching this video is very helpful as I don't really have a clue regarding new bikes/gears etc.
Fantastic comparison videos. Breaking down the specs and letting the audience decide what to get is awesome. Thank you!!
Thank you too!!
Thanks a million for all the work you put into this! I was wasting all my time on the bike forums until I saw how well you simplified all this.
You’re welcome!! I appreciate that a lot :)
These are the best videos I’ve seen yet that do comparisons of the most popular models of the big brand bikes. Please continue with them .....great work.!
Thank you so much!! I appreciate that a lot :)
I can only agree with what KK has written, I only discovered your videos by chance. I am looking to buy an entry level hardtail and then fit a Bafang 1000kw Mid-Drive ,hopefully the bottom bracket on the bike I choose will be a ‘straight-through ‘ with no complications.
Your videos are extremely good, simple and informative to a novice that wants to get into MB but only wants to bike British roads and off -road fire-tracks.Covid has given me more time to study this but there are so many videos it gets confusing to try and make a final decision, but I think yours will help me more than any others. Great work and thanks
@@grahamgilbert9331 Wow I'm flattered! Thank you so much for your support; I'm so happy that my videos helped!!
This is what we look for in these reviews. Please keep it up and expand to entry level full suspension bikes.
Thank you!! I’ll hopefully get to some full suspensions eventually :)
Watched all the three videos in the series. Clarified lot of aspects. Thanks a lot.
Glad they helped!
You’ve gained another sub. Very informative and no bs . Thanks
Thanks!!
Great video! I've been bikepacking for 8 years and evolved a Boardman 27.5 hardtail. I like the straight handlebar, front suspension and wider tyres, hence gravel bike is a non starter. The Boardman is now worn out and I've upgraded to the Talon. With tubolito inners, weight is less than 13kg. I've added seat post suspension for further comfort. Never got on with 29 for bikepacking and gearing with the single chain ring is actually ideal.
🔥🔥Fire video 🔥🔥 helped me out a lot, I’ve been comparing bikes trying to see which was best for daily use maybe some exercise, as well as a decent entry level bike for some easy/medium trail riding
Thanks!! Glad I could help :)
The Talon 2 is the clear winner for me. I think I’m going grab it when my local bike shop gets its next shipment. Your videos have been so helpful for trying to buy a bike. Thanks!
You’re welcome!! Definitely a good choice :)
You could definitely do future videos like this one by bike category.
1. 27.5" Plus size aluminum trail-oriented hardtail (Terek Roscoe, Diamondback Mason, Raleigh Tokul)
2. 29er Cross-country race oriented aluminum hardtail (Trek X-Caliber, Diamondback Overdrive 29, Specialized Chisel)
3. 29er Cross-country race oriented carbon hardtail (Trek Procaliber, Specialized S-Works)
4. Enduro bikes (Rocky Mountain Altitude, Giant Reign, Intense Cycles Carbine)
5. Downhill bikes (Rocky Mountain Slayer, Trek Session, Specialized Session, Intense Cycles M29)
6. Bikepacking (Trek Stache, Rocky Mountain Growler)
7. Fatbikes (Specialized Fatboy, Diamondback El Oso, Rocky Mountain Blizzard)
Just bought my very first mtb the Talon 2 a couple days ago. I was looking for the Marlin 6 but at this point of the year most of the local bike shops here are out of stock. But luck have served me well and I found an XS Talon 2 (which is perfect for my size) for roughly below 500$ (converted to USD) and it had the UK groupset components. Looking at the price range, for me I struck a great deal! Thank you for these types of videos! It's a pain to look through their websites for hours for their comparisons. Also, let me know which parts should I uprgade first.
I literally asked this exact comparison question just today. And lo and behold, there's a video! Nice! Although I added the Cannondale Trail in my question. I am leaning toward the Talon however.
:D Thanks!
Thanks for the video. I just got my son a Talon 2. He’s 6 foot 2 so when I called all my local shops that was the only XL entry level bike available. Looks like I got lucky !
Nice!! It’s hard to find bikes nowadays so that definitely is pretty lucky :)
Amazing video, great information and explanation, thank you
You’re welcome!
I bought a Talon 2 yesterday, super pumped!
This is a fantastic review for me because I’m right now looking at all of these bikes. Thanks for all the great information
AW glad I could help :D
What'd you get?
I really appreciate the time you took covering this information and focusing on key differences. Further, I appreciate you explaining how these differences translate to the road/trail.
Thank you! I appreciate you liking the video :D
I was waiting for this! thanks!!
No problem!
Appreciate the video bro helped me make a decision on the Talon 2👍 just picked up today & actually came with the Ardent maxxis not the race model tho are those still tubeless tires & wheels?
Very well done ! Clear and to the point . Excellent !!
Thank you!!
Great Video. Informative, and a clearly assured mindset. I give it 5 lollipops!
AW THANKS!!
Bought a Trek Marlin 6 2022 and I love it as it now comes with Deore 10speed! 👌
You really helped me out when getting a new bike thanks for the help now own a 2021 Marlin 7
Glad I could help! The marlin 7 is an amazing bike for sure :)
@@TalalipopMTB yeah loving it me and my mate go out every week now with them
As always very well done and so informative. - Than you
You're welcome!
Truly helpful! Thanks for laying out the specs charts!
You’re welcome!!
i ride a Trek Marlin 4 2017, and i thought it was pretty nice until I felt a full carbon FSR bike (Cannondale Trigger 3 2019). my friend also has the Trek Marlin 6, so i hope to buy one of those soon.
Fantastic review. I'm looking at a second bike as this lockdown situation is preventing the fixing of my Talon 2 and I'd not considered the Trek until now👍
Thank you!! Glad I could help out :)
Super helpful video mate, thanks!
Glad it helped!
I really appreciate your videos, very educational!
Have you ever made a comparison of bikepacking bicycles, i.e. Trek 1120 vs Surly ECR, etc.
Thank you! And no unfortunately I have not looked into those, though I have built an 1120 at Trek!
U got a subscriber here for your effort. Awesome! Ty
Thank you! I appreciate that :)
So timely valuable vid ..thanks man
No problem!
Very good video and which can be best choice. Thank you👍
Welcome!
Really great video! This helped me in deciding, but would appreciate if you could also compare Trek Marlin 7 with Giant Talon 1 and Rockhopper Comp/Elite. Cheers!!
Thank you! And sure I’ll consider that comparison as well
This is so helpful! You rock!
Thanks!!
Great vid bro! Keep rocking
Thank you!
Because of the pandemic it's not easy to get your hands on any bike nowadays. However, I was able to get a base Rockhopper back in August and I'm loving it. It does really well in rough terrain and hardcore trails.
Nice!! And yeah agreed; so hard to find bikes in stock nowadays.
Rockhopper has always been an iconic exception of "budget", lower level bikes. Nobody can be ashamed of a rockhopper. Capable, balanced and Upgradable.
Great vid! Love your vids!
Thank you!
Awesome video! I think I’m going with the talon or rockhopper
Thank you!
Still can't get over the lollypop wheels, lol
🍭🍭
Talalipop MTB 2021 Top Fuel Carbon next??
Awesome review dude!
Thanks!!
Just Got My Talon 2 and this video was very Helpful
Nice!! And thank you :)
is it good and lightweight? thinking of buying please reply
I bought a Talon 2 just recently for my son. He loves riding it. Compared to his ‘98 dual sus hand me down I gave him. It’s in the concrete color. I like it a lot. Different animal compared to my Stance.
@@1Adam1584 it’s not super light with all the entry-level components it has. Definitely nowhere near carbon. But I would say it is lighter than a steel frame. I just weighed it here at home. It’s 32 lbs tires are at 32 psi with no additional equipment installed. I bought it in Oct. the store finally received it in the middle of week 47. Hope that helps. Enjoy which ever bike finds you!!
@@gabeskee210 thank you but I suppose it’s a good bike?
I had Rockhopper and Talon, both are amazing bikes, even you are beginner or intermediate ciclist, very oriented to be upgraded whit better components.
how about the marlin
\
Very helpful... Thanks for the info... im beginner and owning giant talon.
Thank you too!
Great vid! Can you also compare the norco storm 2021 lineup pls.
I’ll consider that one!
Very informative, thanks.
Thank you!
Thanks for the video, but How does de scott aspect compare on this modelos, a y chance you can do a review of this bike?
love this guys videos.
Thanks for making this video
Thanks for watching :)
Thanks for the video, however, I noticed a lot of errors that could miss lead people, one noticeable mistake is that the Specialized Rockhopper is the one with MicroShift technology, not the Talon. Another mistake is that the Specialized fork DOES come with suspension lockout. Over all a great video. Thanks.
Thanks for the review
Could you please compare marlin 6 vs talon 4
Thank you for this review. I have a list of eleven bikes and the information will help. Availability will be the biggest challenge.
Of course! And yeah I've heard a lot of people these days are just ordering the bike they can get the fastest rather than the one they want the most, which is unfortunate.
@@TalalipopMTB sure. But how do you know which one is the one you want the most when you can't even see one in person let alone test ride it.
@@harrygrimley4352 I guess just based off of the components and looks from the pictures, though of course that doesn't tell the whole story.
@@TalalipopMTB oh ya. I understand. But I'm a cheap middle aged married man and I have a limited amount of money to work with. So I don't like the idea of buying something and then not liking it.
@@harrygrimley4352 That's understandable! I know Trek offers an unconditional guarantee so if you don't like the bike you can return it within 30 days. But yeah it's still good to start off with the right bike so you don't have to do that.
Awesome review... Really informative. Took decision to by talon 2.
I'd love to see the full suspension version of this video.. Stumpjumper vs. Fuel (or which ever is most comparable)
I bought the giant talon 0 and it's like the buy i have ever done ❤
Awesome review!! Thanks !!
No problem :)
Great video dude! Thanks
You’re welcome!
Just bought a Rockhopper. Can't wait to take it out
Nice!!!
Just bought a giant talon 2 today! XL 29 for $700 out the door!! 💪🏼 I’m ready
Sick!!
Awesome video! Thanks!
You’re welcome!
I just bought the Giant Talon 2 2nd hand from a friend for 300$. Slightly used. So happy with the purchase.
Nice!! Funnily enough I also bought that one secondhand for $300 about a month ago
Just got my marlin 7 yesterday I’m so pumped on it it’s a beautiful bike I have a marlin 6 too but I’m inexperienced in mountain biking so I’m learning about it and how these bikes work
Nice!! The marlin 7 is a favorite of mine for sure :)
you could have thrown some rok shocks on the 6 and you would have virtually had the 7.
Your still spending about the same then the 7 has some better upgrades as well plus you can route an internal dropper post with the 7
@@nbanta48 but if you already have the 6 its only costing you for the forks
@@nbanta48 you can also fit a dropper post on the 6 with the cable external
Good review ..with table.always helpful👍🏻
Thank you!!
Such good content tysm!
You’re welcome!
Awesome video Good job 👏
Thank you!
Helpful video thanks
You’re welcome :)
Hi All, did the video got cut off before the last category was being mention? Was waiting for the Rockhopper Expert comparison. Thank U 🙏🏻
I would love to see one on the Giant Phantom versus the Trek Excalibar
Hi! Great video! I have a question.. Witch do you think its going to be more confortable to someone that has upper back pain?
You used the wrong which. You used witch, which would be the flies around on a broomstick and makes potions with frogs breath type witch.
Good Job, very good unbias observation and review... I own a Talon 2 2020 , and I can tell you it was so good , that it got me hooked on Mountain biking , making me wonder what a full suspension would bring to the table, and ultimately leading me to the purchase of a 2021 Giant trance 3 , which I have enjoyed a lot ....... :)
Thank you! And that’s awesome!!
Great video and thank you
Welcome!
Nice video for someone like me who does not know which is best for my type of riding.
Thank you! That was my goal :)
Can you make a video on the cannondale trail lineup? the specs seem really good for the price for most of the bikes.
Noted! I'll look into those eventually.
I ended up going with the Rockhopper Elite 29 1X. What I would say is that the Rockhopper is very fast going down hill and isn't so good for a technical trail that's hard. It's more build for high speed.
The Cannondale Trail series would complete this entry level MTB comparison, in regards to chain style LBS inventory. How would the Trail 6 fair?
Here is a bike brand LIV only for female form GINAT group, the same level bike is called Tempt as Talon, if it can be mentioned and introduced will be better.
you should do giant talon 1, norco storm 2, and trek marlin 7
thanks for this comparison
No problem!
Very nice comparison
Thank you!
Same, one in stock…bought the rock hopper elite. I was wondering about a weight comparison, mind has bigger tires though.
honestly for me, looks wise it has to be Trek Marlin, but specialized and trek are hard to find in my country, so giant is most likely the best option
EXCELLENT VIDEO!
THANKS AGAIN :DD
If you are intending to have bike for more than 5 years and going to ride bike, the best bike shop in a Trek bike shop and what they sell is the best bike, sometimes other brands too. Usually they offer free tune ups
I just bought the talon 2 on 12/31/21 and prices have increased dramatically. I paid $818 OTD. This inflation is killing us. My talon 2 Comes with ardent tires which I guess is tubeless ready!!!
Nice vid bro 😎
Thanks!!
No problem man
Gosh your so helpful thanks my g
Hahaha no problem :)
I just bought specialized Rockhopper expert and I am satisfied with it 👍👍👍
Sick!!
I’m not sure if you talked about the Cannondale Trail models line? Thank you
I cant seem to find any basic bike size guides for a xc setup, just ordered a Talon 3 29er size Large frame (following the company guidelines for height) but it turned out HUGE, have about 1 inch space between topbar and crutch while standing on ground. Any recommendations for what I should consider for simple beginner bike fit?
I got the marlin 6 here in Phoenix, AZ. I wanted the marlin 7 but the availability right now is not there. Even the marlin 6 was hard to find. I called atleast 10 stores and finally landis cyclery had it lol.
Yeah I remember calling stores every single day hoping they'd eventually get one in stock. Times are tough right now :(
I think Landis is the place with bikes.... still selection is low for taller guys. Just got a marlin 5 there in xl
The Talon 2 is certainly the best "trail" bike here. It's 1-by and geo are more trail oriented, but the brakes are not. I take mine down black and double black diamonds, something I would not do on my friend's old 2-by Marlin 7. However, if you want to tackle the big stuff, upgrade the brakes. I've had more than a few near misses due to lack of stopping power, and my shop did not even install the front caliper properly, so watch out for that.
Yeah dude talon 2 is best for your buck
Giant wins
My 2020 Talon 2 is using coil spring rockshox XC30
Very thorough. Impressed!
Thank you!
Got the Talon and I LOVE IT
Best bike ive owned
Awesome!
At around 5 mins 20 seconds you correctly state the head tube angles of the bikes but your graphic chart has them wrong. Cool video. I would love to see a video comparing the Rockhopper Elite to the other comparable bikes. It would be a cool sub $1000 bikes video.
Thanks for pointing that out! I'll add an update comment right now; can't believe I mixed that one up! And noted; I'll look into a video like that as well since a few people have asked about it.
It would be really cool if you could compare the RH Elite vs Marlin 7 vs Giant T0
Really helpful ❤️ love from India
Thank you!
So visiting the bike shop, Giant talon2 US MODEL comes with Maxxis ardent 27.5x2.25
Pls do Trek Roscou vs Nukeproof Scout aswel :)
