    Thank you from 62 year old “back in to motorcycles” after a 35 year or so gap. I used to race motorcycles cross in 1970’s & 1980’s I never really rode on the road. I have a 2014 796 abs. Do you still have your bike ? Do you have more videos ? I had my new pit bull stand for a week & found out don’t use it with Flipp - Flops. I lowered the bike on my foot & could not get it out. If the wheels were a little bit smaller I would have broke my foot

    Thanks for the great video.
    Just would like to point out that to measure the chain tension, the manual says "Turn the rear wheel slowly to find the position at which the chain is at its most taut.
    With the motorcycle on its side stand, press with a finger in the centre of the bottom run of the chain and measure the distance between the centres of chain link pins and the aluminium swingarm. The distance should be within 60 to 62 mm".

      @krayzieegg7294 Před 5 lety

      Sonny S on our m796 my father said theyve adjusted the rear shock or seat height 2sizes down like 33-31 by changing the rear shock settings i dont know how they did it but if ever they did will the chain tension of 60-62mm change or will it be the same on the current shock settings? I tried the 60-62mm but it kinda feels like a liitle too loose for my comfort i mean i tried running the rear on first gear with a rear stand and it bounces when the engine starts to bog and is hitting the lower part of the swingarm. It doesnt seem that loose to the point that itll jump out of the sprocket just too bouncy and hits the swingarm is that normal or like i thought thighten it more?

    • @mryugo7829
      @mryugo7829 Před 9 měsíci

      depends ! 60mm on the tightest point of the chain from the swingarm is waY TO LOOSE

    Kudos for using gloves and a torque wrench, a rarity in your typical youtube DIY. Other than not measuring from the center link, a perfect video.

  • @jimprice7869
    @jimprice7869 Před 9 lety +1

    To those who comment that the rear suspension must be unloaded to measure the chain slack, you are correct, BUT.
    As I don't have a motorcycle lift, I had the chain serviced at a Ducati dealership. I rode home, about 20 miles and put the bike on the Pit Bull. I then measured the slack and that is the number I used in the video.
    So unless the tech doesn't know how to service a chain or in 20 miles of riding the slack made a huge change, it seems to me that number is good.

    Thanks so much for the clear video! The only thing I'm not clear on is where the top (zero point) is horizontally along the bike. From where do we measure to seek the 2 1/8 " chain top distance? Also hace you though about doing others? Clutch lever adjust, brakes, belt change and all things one might take on? ....if, of course, you still have the same bike!

    Finally a clear video of how to work on the ducati chain! Thank you, I will get mine done tonight when I get home. Does your chain touch the swing arm if you push it up at the center area? I guess Ducati's are different than other bikes when it comes to chain slack right?

  • @tonyhouston3049
    @tonyhouston3049 Před 9 lety

    Nice video and very easy to see everything. Only thing I would suggest is when using a torque wrench start with a lower setting. Example would be torque to 20 then 25 then final of 30 foot pounds. This will ensure a very even pressure like the torque procedure on cylinder heads.

  • @Byteswap
    @Byteswap Před 3 lety +1

    In the workshop manual (German version) they say the excenter need to be turned counter clockwise for tensioning and clockwise for loosing the chain. People on yourtube do/say the exact opposite. I am confused can somebody tell me whats the correct information is :D

  • @The88champion

    Spin the chain the other way when lubing and cleaning, that way you wont have to worry about pinching your fingers in the spocket

  • @bobkelly3734
    @bobkelly3734 Před 10 lety +2

    No offense, but the idea of measuring the gap to the swingarm with the bike on the sidestand is that the measurement should reflect that distance when the rear wheel is relatively UNLOADED. Most bikes are done the same way, on the sidestand. Using any SSS stand puts the weight of the bike on the spring and thus loads the suspension. Ducati (and other) techs use a chock for the front wheel and then use a scissor jack to put the rear wheel just barely up in the air, thus unloading it completely. Same process on my Multistrada 1100.

      Jonathan Jimenez I have one, I just had 1 problem at starting in 3 years, it was the error About the valve exhaust which was very easy to fix and cheap, If you like a bike for every day ride, that bike it’s for u

      @Jeffdamonkey Před 6 lety

      i've had starting issues with mine, and it was shutting off on ignition, restarting and reading dsw-005 or something of sorts. The fix was changing out the battery.

    • @krayzieegg7294
      @krayzieegg7294 Před 5 lety

      I have no issue at all except i keep losing screws and bolts all the time. Specially the two bolts on my kicks stand. I almost fell with the bike. Things ive fix on my bike. Return spring on the gear shifter. Had to open the clutch case or engine case for that which needed some tools that i dont have. Gear shifter for leaning too much on a hair pin uphill luckily i didnt crash and the shifter was just bent just fine to get home safely. The screw that hold the seat cowel that is screwed on a plastic of your seat had to destroy that locking mechanism and mold it back with an epoxy so i can still use it but not as secure as before so i had to messed up the seat and did a lock wire style thing to tighten things up securely. Changed Those locking pins on the rear wheel because the last mechanic that did my wheel didnt screw my rear wheel tight enough and broke those pins. Then lastly like i said screws and bolts. This the fifth time ive lost my kick stand bolts and broked my kick stand safety killswitch. i was on the road when that happened and couldnt get it to 1st gear without activating the kill switch luckily again found the solution on the net and bypassed the wires and it worked. Now i just finished drilling a whole on my bolts so i can lock wire it and pair it with a super glue lets see if those assholes gonna come loose on me again. Other than that which most of them are neglects on my part the bike is perfect. I love it

    Another trick.... do the final shoot after you ride around the block and chain is warm. It sits right in there better.
