      I completely respect your view Nick, in fact because I'm so infuriated by this change it's sort of nice to know that there are people like you who it helps, but for me it's the single most disappointing thing about this otherwise really exciting update. I have my watch set up with the main watch face that looks very traditional and pleasing to me without too many complications but like Brandon in the video I also for some reason look at my heart rate a lot so I have an alternate infographic modular (or whatever it's called) watch face I can swipe right to that shows my 24 hour heartrate stats and also has quick icon access to workouts, blood-ox, ECG and the activity rings at the top left. I'm really going to miss that.

    • @julianfp1952
      @julianfp1952 Před rokem +9

      @@gizmo2445 I completely agree. From what I can see from Brandon's really comprehensive walk through of all the new stuff the left and right swipes on the watch face are now unused. If Apple wanted to repurpose those gestures for something else then maybe I could understand this change but unless they do have some new use for the left and right swipes that we haven't seen yet then why oh why not make this change in behaviour optional? I remember back in the old days Apple repurposed the side button on the early iPads from orientation-lock to mute but after a lot of customer pushback did relent and introduce a new option in settings so that the user could select what behaviour they wanted. Just maybe, if Apple doesn't have future plans for these gestures, Apple might relent and make it optional in a future release. I live in hope.

    I hate that the got rid of side swiping for watch faces and swiping up for the control center. As well as changing how you get to night mode on the wayfinder watch face. • @julianfp1952
      @julianfp1952 Před rokem +4

      I agree although one area where I think Apple has taken a backward step on that consistency is removing the ability to swipe left and right between watch faces. To me that feels very like swiping between different pages on my iPhone home screen and I have my watch set up accordingly. I am really going to miss not being able to swipe between my main watch face, a health-oriented face where I can get at various medical stats, and a most frequently used utilities face where I can see messages, shazam, directions, etc.

    • @BackAtItAKen

      @@julianfp1952 I agree with you, that was one of the first (somewhat) jarring things for me as I was watching, but I think we’ll get used to it quicker than we think. I think the idea of the widgets should do a good job of replacing that swipe feature.

    • @julianfp1952
      @julianfp1952 Před rokem +1

      @@BackAtItAKen Yes. If Apple doesn't relent at some point and make it an option then I will indeed need to stop moaning and adjust, and I agree that widgets might well take away some or even all of the pain. The only way to know for sure is to try, something that I won't do until it gets to the release version. There does look to be an awful lot of other great stuff in there and I will be really interested to see how much widgets do add to the experience. Presumably widgets will also need to take some of the load previously borne by the Dock since, now that Apple is repurposing the single press on the side button to bring up the control centre, I assume the Dock is another feature that is going away.

    Not being able to quickly switch watch faces AND the change to only let us get recents (instead of setting up favorites) both have made me change my mind about watchOS 10. The quick change of watch faces feels like such a fundamental feature of WatchOS that loosing that just feels awful. I could live with no favorites, but I LOVE and almost rely on quick changing watchfaces.
    Probably won’t get WatchOS10 for a WHILE if ever without them adding that feature back (or giving us the option)

    • @anniemilakovic7683

      Same on both counts. I don’t want recents, I want my list of favorites period. And I switch between faces multiple times a day, for work, exercise, and regular times. I don’t see anything I’m excited, only changes removing features or functionality that i HEAVILY rely on.

  • @Matrixtruesaiyan
    @Matrixtruesaiyan Před rokem +11

    Nice review!
    Before you could have several timers at once too, but it was not as easy or fast to switch between them.
    Also, on the new timer when the time is over the screen turns orange. And when you start timer,.. you could see seconds moving for a few seconds before you only see minutes and hours only.
    Something I wish they kept was how easy was to switch between watch faces too.
    Something I wish they added was to choose to not return to clock if you have activity, the weather app and other apps open. For example, I like to have the activity app open where it shows my steps and distance without returning to clock. Or apple could simply add that to activity instead of being able to only see stand up, calories and exercise on complication.
    Also, I’d to see something like Gentler Streak to have an idea about physical recovery if I should rest or workout.

    I like the new changes in general. It looks more polished and modern. I’m looking forward to trying out the widgets. Those seem like they’ll be quite useful. I just hope they won’t be a huge battery drain. The loss of the recents/favorites dock and being unable to swipe to change faces are two changes I’m not a fan of. But I’m sure I’ll get used to it.

    This does look like a great release but there are a couple of big things that I'll miss. Being able to swipe between watch faces is one and a lot of people here are mentioning that but the other big negative change for me is the loss of the honeycomb app launcher. I actually hated that and had my app launcher set to list mode for about my first 3 years of Watch ownership but about a year ago for some reason I tried honeycomb mode and discovered that once I'd spent a lot of effort setting it up it gave me far more of my most used app icons immediately on screen to press on and, again with thought and effort setting it up, I found the 2 dimensional scrolling really helpful.
    I have my honeycomb set up so that all my most used stuff is on the initial display with the travel related stuff at the top (including alternate weather/wind/tide apps), the health-related stuff on the left, the system-related stuff (including things like password managers, 2FA etc) at the bottom and then other general purpose stuff on the right. That way if what I want isn't immediately visible I know that if it's a less used health app that I want then I go to the left, a travel app I go up, a system app I go down, and other apps I go right. For me this minimises the scrolling that I need to do to get to less-used apps even with lots of stuff installed on my watch. It's another case where I wish Apple had, rather than displacing the honeycomb layout in favour of this new icon layout, had instead offered three options for the launcher layout - list view, the new icon-based 1 dimensional scrolling, and the current 2 dimensional honeycomb arrangement.

    I think a lot of the features are actually Apple just making watchOS more complicated. I'm usually big when it comes to tech but as someone who uses Apple Watch in a more simple manner, I don't like some of these changes - primarily the switching watch faces, the night mode for Ultra, and control center. I do like the overall updated consistency and fluidity along with modernization and ditching the what, 6-7 year old Card design.
