Lyrics:
Saturday night I was downtown
Working for the FBI
Sittin' in a nest of bad men
Whiskey bottles piling high
Bootlegging boozer on the west side
Full of people who are doing wrong
Just about to call up the DA man
When I heard this woman sing a song
A pair of 45's made me open my eyes
My temperature started to rise
She was a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5'9 beautiful tall
With just one look I was a bad mess
'Cause that long cool woman had it all
I saw her heading to the table
Like a tall walking big black cat
When Charlie said I hope that you're able, boy
Cause I'm telling you she knows where it's at
Then suddenly we heard the sirens
And everybody started to run
A-jumping out of doors and tables
When I heard somebody shootin' a gun
Well the DA was pumping my left hand
And a-she was a-holding my right
Well I told her don't get scared
'Cause you're gonna be spared
I've gotta be forgiven if I wanna spend my living
With a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5'9 beautiful tall
Yeah, with just one look I was a bad mess
Cause that long cool woman had it all
Had it all
Had it all

Damn skippy it is!!! 🤘👍
Think this is my favourite Hollies song
That Opening Riff ,..Even the Force is Moved by that...or is that the FORCE manifesting in that Opening Riff ❤.😅
True, but it makes you expect a totally different song if you've never heard it before.
The colour note(s?) used in the intro aren't used anywhere in the song.

I have always loved this song, when I was 18yrs old my boyfriend soon to be husband bought me my first black dress and high heels. I felt so happy with the memory of that wonderful experience. We've been married for over 50yrs years now and my dear husband is fighting Cancer now for the 3rd time please put him in your prayers 🙏❤.

That opening riff is one of the best in classic rock. Inspired many to pick up a guitar.
I still get a shiver up my spine when I hear it!
I really love the music my dad used to get drunk to. 😭 Thanks truama.
I've been playing that riff for over 25 years now and I could never understand, until recently, when earth you could go to the trouble of writing one of the greatest riffs ever only to play it twice in the intro and just forget it.
Simple was always better. Best song they ever did, once they stopped being a pop band in the 60s.
It is a great song THERE is a LOTTA COOL riffs in THIS song i was blown away when it came out to find out it waz the hollies the VOCAL is aittle more hard sounding that most of there songs great band harmonys are fabulous a me mates?

I'm 62, class of 1980. I grew up listening the 60's and 70's music. There is some good stuff from the 80's too, when MTV was rockin'. You'll probably like a lot of that too. And don't miss out on some of the more obscure songs from the 60's and 7'0's like "I Won't be Home Tonight" and "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" among others.
When I was a kid, my dad used to listen and dance to this song. The vibration of the song and seeing my dad dance gave a big satisfaction. Love this song!!!!
Sounds like ccr js

I'm 28. I'm greatful that my dad turned me on to good rock n roll. Classic rock will forever be timeless ✌️
I agree! My older brothers did it for me & it's still my favorite music!
Hell yeah man! My dad is into classic rock from the 60’s 80’s and 90’s and country and my grandpa loves the oldies. I always tell people some new music is good but too much of the new stuff had filthy in it and a lot of the older music has good rhythm to it and it’s not the same as it used to be. It’s a great thing to appreciate the stuff out parents and grandparents grew up on because I feel even at my age as well 28, I can learn from the older generations!
I’m 28 myself
God bless You!

I'm 53 years old. My earliest memories was my parents cranking this up in the car. No seatbelts. My little brother and I would be going crazy dancing in the back seat. Bouncing everywhere. LOL! I still bounce crazy when I hear this song. Good times!!!!
We don't need no stinking seatbelts! Besides, the vehicles were made of 100% Detroit steel. Plenty of protection.
I remember standing on the front seat at "speed" peeing into a Coca Cola bottle because "we're not stopping". Greatness!
Me too..
Well after hearing this , I do more than bounce . I move to the beat , words & I dance just like i did in the 60's !

That reverb on the vocals gives it extra power
I'm a full blown metalhead, but this song (along with most of the Creedence CR's repertoire) is essential on my playlist!

Truth!
My dad just passed away last month, the day after his 75th birthday due to cancer. He loved this song. Heard it many times as a kid riding around in his truck. Hearing it here again just brought me to tears because of him. What a rocking song, it’s not even from my era but it’s great.
I'm 63 years old and rocking all over my kitchen to this song like a crazy woman. Can't ever get enough of this song after all these years. I'm 5'2"but I'm pretending to be 5'9" in a black dress with stilleto heels right now.
The vocalist has a huge range. He hits high notes with his chest voice, no falsetto. Love them.
I am a vocalist, and was thinking about doing it, but too high. I spent many summers, growing up to these guys, inspiration.

Ridiculous that this song only reached 32 in the UK charts but hit Number 2 in the USA. The guitar riffs alone are pure gold.

That’s great! Is it on CZcams, your bands version?
+Mark Christopher did you all know this is a 100% Hollies song and by no means that their producer (who was ill by then) did not participate in this, no tips, no suggestions, no comments, just the band doing what they always wanted to do at studio and recording the way it is lololol I think that's why this song particularly sounds a lot ahead by it's time

45 years ago, my band recruited another guitarist just so we could play this song. It's still one of my favorites. And I chopped the opening riff to use as my ringtone for my wife
I lived in a small town and had just had my induction physical and was told I was fit mentally and physically to serve. I had about 2 weeks before I reported back to the Armed Forces Entry Station. There was a small metal building in the next county we called the "The Sit down" they sold beer by the mug at 25 cents each. My buddies took me to the sit down before I left and this song was on the juke box and was played just about every other song. I sat in a metal folding chair and drank my mugs of beer. When I reached the point of not being able to walk I would just hold up my empty mug and a buddy would come by get my mug and have it filled up and bring it back to me. This song every time I hear it is like a flashback to that night. It was played over and over and that night and this song is burned into my brain !!

I started playing guitar when I was real little! I was born in '68 and all I could really learn was country music cuz that's what my dad played on the guitar and banjo but when I would hear this song on the radio man it would blow me away I always wanted to learn how to play it! The song is very haunting!! It has like a pedal tone in it so it's melodic and you catch it but the way those notes are played so it resonates and it just sticks in your brain! One of the coolest guitar riffs ever sort of reminiscent of blue oysters Cult Don't fear the reaper. That song has a recurring open G note third string that makes it haunting! Long story short I finally got to learn this song had a hog roast party! I had my Randall snakeskin stacked there and another guitar player and kid had his crate amplifier and we were having like a duel! Ironically the only song he knew how to play was Long Cool woman in a Black dress and I learned it off of him so that was really cool! Take care and keep rocking!🐢🐢

May their memories be a blessing. Thank you for sharing that. Great song! Much love ❤
May GOD bless you friend!
My mother and grandmother both used to jam out to this classic! Mom would dance with me and the dogs!
Now her and Nana are up dancing with the Good Lord, hopefully he can keep up!
The transition at 1:34 is one of the most incredible thing I've heard in rock music
That's exactly the moment where no songs are quieting down having entered the outro, only the hollies take it and rip right through the entire movement again. I mean, with a riff and a vocal lead that incredible, what else could you do?
That string slap in this part that gets the riff going again & then slips in one more time in the middle is incredible and a challenge to play. It's a riff, if one plays it correctly with the string slap, that separates the great players from the good players.
The frequency of this song does something
The Hollies were one of the best groups ever, original and fantastic musicians
❤
It’s not the Hollies, it’s the band they were copying, CCR.
I got the same idea (and T Rex for the outro) but anyhow it's a great tune So Respect to U,The Hollies, Creedence & Marc Bolan 😇😇😇@@Martell-XO
@@Martell-XOnope. CCR was a band from a rich part of San Francisco. They imitated blues from the bayou. And I love their music, and perhaps they developed as contemporaries but never copied.

One of the most Iconic songs ever, God Bless the Hollies.........Remember the Titans!
16/11/23....e eu ainda ouvindo , e curtindo essa maravilha.. musica boa não tem idade, e sim qualidade...
Played on Woolies radio back around 2014… thought it was a fraction simple with no chorus but it had something.
Now I think it’s absolutely legendary.
When I hear this song especially at the beginning.. it sounds like a something that should be played in the scene of a movie when suspects are tryin to make a getaway
Zztop under pressure
I wouldn't be suprised if it has been.
Totally agree...just like del Shannon runaway in crime story..
They have and they did! Dusk till Dawn
It basically is a movie.
My older brothers played this great song. I still love the music from the late 60s and 70s. I'm in a time warp! But, that music was the best! 🙂
My words EXACTLY
One of the all-time greatest classic bangers. Perfect.
This is the most patriotic US song for me. God I wish we were as noble as the feeling this song gives us
It hypnotized me when I was 10 years old the first time I heard it. Now half a century later I enjoy it just as much it has become part of me, because I have carried it with me through everything.
Great opening riff. Also the bass line fills the song perfectly. I was 12 when this was released and I viewed this song as the epitome of cool.
I’m 24 and love this old music it’s crazy to see how this new day stuff is called rock after hearing stuff like this I love the old stuff led zeppelin AC/DC blue oyster cult ZZ Top etc 😊
nobody can tell me that this isn't the hardest intro to any song ever played!!
I can listen to classic rock and roll for hours with no hesitation
me too...
