I'm Bulgarian and I can guarantee you that Bulgarian sounds like Russian but I speak English fluently and understandable. It's pretty much the same if you are Russian or Bulgarian, both languages are Slavic and very close to each other. I can understand when someone speaks Russian on 80% even though I have never learnt it. So, basically if you want to learn a language you can do it, no matter what your main language is.
