- How we went to rescue a narrow boat that lost drive on a high flood tide on The River Trent and ended up needing rescuing ourselves as well. It was one very scary day.
Apologies for a missing clip explaining thar Neil on the following narrowboat radioed to say:
“I’ve lost forward drive, lost my anchor overboard and we are drifting broadside with the tide”

What a scary adventure. You all worked together and made it through. Lifelong friendship now. Great pub story. Blessings. Wishing all a wonderful 2024.
Hi Kay and Paul, it all happened over a year ago but I'm glad you all (eventually) got to Torksey safely. I like it that you followed up with the stories of what was wrong with the engines.
Thank you Chris and thanks for watching.
We are all good now and learnt a lot from that experience !!
Thank you. An interesting story. I live close to the Trent, not far from Keadby. I see the big barges going up and down to the ports. They zigzag across the water side to side to avoid the sandbanks. Yes, it's a dodgy river. You did well to get to a safe place.
Wow I would like to see those ships moving.
One did pass Keadby lock whilst we were moored on the lock landing but it was dark.
Thanks for watching
Crikey!! I'm a solo narrow boater and I've always said if I go on the rivers, I'll always have a buddy boat and another person on board with me , for this reason... I was feeling the anxst all the way through this 😳... Amazing job done, so glad you made it back safe.
Yes , I don’t know if there is a Facebook group which helps boaters buddy up?
Yes all arrived safely although, looking back we did a few risky things!!!
Thanks for watching
I did the tidal Trent solo just after I bought my boat (57ft) and although I went through Cromwell at the right time to catch the tide, however it was the lowest high tide of the year after not alot of rainfall and I beached the boat in the middle of the Trent, had to wait 72 hours for a ride big enough to get me off the bottom lol. But hey at least I had an engine I guess :o
i know that feeling , my dad decided to go from torksey to cromwell in a 25ft fibreglass boat , & came across two big barges who both came down at same time & almost took all the water away from us , & we bounced on the riverbed , & lost a rudder blade , so we stopped off on a sandy beach area near some caravans , & waited for my dads friend to come down from torksey, who came out after us & was the last boat, & they towed us down to cromwell , phew boy , was i glad to get to cromwell lol .
Okay. River boating very very different from canal boating. Good one you were able to tie up, get anchored ⚓️ and eventually get power again.
Very scary but so relieved you all got to safety and are fine. Great that you had an anchor. Thanks for sharing. Take care.
Yes that anchor proved very useful. Really glad I took Neil’s advice and did not cut it off!! Thanks for watching
Scary, glad you're all okay. I've watched quite a few vlogs where boaters engines have been caught out by the extra stress of tidal rivers. Glad at leadt one of you had an anchor!
Yes all okay in the end, just two broken boats. I was really chuffed at how our one anchor quickly stopped two boats in a fast flowing river. Thanks for watching
Wow That was an interesting Vlog.Glad you sorted your problems. Im a Tupperwear/ owner recently on the tidal trent and couldent belive that crusier going past and not offering you assistance. My boat is only 25Ft long ,but ive rescued a few narrowboats and cruisers on the canal system, they could of helped, even on a tidal section.
Yes all good thanks Richard, we just need to get moving again once the boat is fixed.
I wonder if maybe the cruiser skipper did not realize we were in trouble.
Well done for being able to rescue a few boats on the network
Hi ...just watched this ..oh so familiar, we also broke down on the Trent. We had a small fire on the stern gland (we noticed the smoke) luckily another boater we had met (Pete) towed us until it cooled down. It was frightening and I'm so pleased you all arrived safely. Valuable lessons learned for us re maintenance and always good to have a travel buddy. XXX New Directions 🙂
Oh no . Yes there are some very nice folk around who are always willing to lend a hand in times of need
Sorry to say this, but poor maintenance of a gerabox and an engine, should have checked oil levels and topped up before setting off and had oil on board as well, engines and gearboxes do not just stop for no reason.
Hi Paul and Kaye Neil and Jayne here well it really was a adventure and for my first time on the Trent it really was a experience never to forget. Loved every minute of it and lots of lessons learned and definitely not put off from going again. I really need to make a blog to follow up with this adventure. And hope to see you guys soon. X
Yes, looking back it was a steep learning curve for all of us, but between us we made it and I for one, have less concerns now about cruising tidal waters than I had before
Really interesting looking forward to the rest of the story
Thanks, it'll be a couple of weeks time
I’d have been terrified!! Glad you were all ok 👍
Yes all okay Angela
Thanks for watching
Flipping heck well done for getting there safely
Thanks, I hope you enjoyed the video
That trip must have been so frightening, kudos to you all for being able to work together and get back to safety.😉
Thank you Janis, yeah it was a bit frightening but oddly it seems like a great experience looking back but not one I’d like to repeat!
Thanks for watching
Hi another good vlog just thought I might say that I am looking forward to your vlog on what exactly went wrong with your engine and if you know what went wrong with your friends gearbox all knowledge is very useful for when problems arise
Should have that detail in the follow up
Thanks for watching
What a beautiful sunrise!
We are rarely up in time to see these!!
Welldone glad your all safe.
Thank you Tony and thanks for watching
Glad all crew and both boats made it safely. I hope the repairs were not expensive (gong to look for that video now.) The Trent has claimed quite some number of vessels over the years, both small and large. You did well to keep your calm and handle things.
Should have the follow up video done in a couple of weeks. For us it will be quite expensive!!
@@narrowboatmaggiemay Oh dear. Sorry to hear that.
well that was an unexpected adventure, glad all turned out well. regards Australia.
Thank you Lynda
Yes nobody hurt
Just two damaged boats
Thanks for watching
At the point where you were saying you were going to cut off your anchor I actually shouted "No" at the video! Very glad you didn't do that.
Yes in hindsight I’m really glad that I took Neil’s advice!!
Thanks for watching
Looking forward to the follow up, on engine’s repairs🙏🕊✝️🙏🇨🇦
Be a couple of weeks time James
Thank you for watching
Wow! What a day!! The way you kept your cool and handled the situation was amazing. Is there no coastguard to assist stricken vessels round here? I’ve been on the Thames out of Limehouse but understood there were coastguards who could come to your aid if the worst happened. I’ve long wanted to do this stretch of the Trent because Keadby is close to my home town, but I don’t think I’ve got the guts. So thank you for putting up this vlog, it was really, really interesting.
Yes I think there is a coastguard Susie. We did consider that phoning them a few times but luckily we got drive and avoided that. I hope this has not put you off doing this trip. we were very unlucky. The cast majority of those that travel on the tidal Trent have very pleasant experiences!!
You will be lucky if the coastguard will come past trent falls where the trent meets the humber and river ouse. Every boater should offer assistance if they see another boat in trouble. Their are less boats from keady to torksey and the river flow is a lot stronger. Torksey to Cromwell is a lot better and more boats around . Just bad luck for you both to break down . For other boater going on rivers make sure you have clean fuel filters and carry spares especially if your boat as been on canals for a long time as the wave action can stir up silt in your tank.
Safe journeys.....
Wow so glad your all safe ! So so scary 😟
Yes it was a bit Mandy, but no one got hurt and we learnt lots! Thanks for watching
@@narrowboatmaggiemay my pleasure
Awesome tale...!Glad you made it to safety... Thanks... be interested to know what caused your engine failure..
Thanks for watching
Yes we were all safe in the end but it didn’t seem to good at the time
Still not fixed yet but video will follow once we are moving again
Tidal rivers and canals are very different.Glad you are all ok.Great video, look forward to the followup
Thank you Stephen, yes I do like the tidal rivers.you do have to think about when and where you can travel but on the other hand I also like the tranquility of the canals
Thanks for watching
Quite a story! Yikes!
How on earth can you lose an anchor or did they simply not take one?!
Well that was a scary situation, this is the first vlog I have seen with someone successfully using an anchor. May I ask what size the boats are and what type and weight of anchor you had. Thanks for sharing this.
The follow up video has all that detail in it but it it 12kg both boats 57ft
Thanks for watching
@@narrowboatmaggiemay thanks for coming back so quickly that’s very helpful as I need to get one for our new 60ft boat
Why did you reverse to try to retrieve your anchor! You should go forwards with the crew taking in the slack until the line is vertical at which point you drive forwards to dislodge the anchor after locking off the line on the cleat. Then pull the anchor up.
We had insufficient power to turn against the tide and go forwards
Not once in the whole video and at anchor 3 times, did I ever hear of either of you checking things out to see what the problems were. All you seemed to do was sit and wait. A knocking engine, would usually suggest a lack of oil, either in quantity or the oil pump. You would think you would take a few minutes and check it out! As for overheating transmission, same applies, first thing is check the oil level in the transmission. Followed by the transmission cooler for blockages.
All of that detail will be in the follow up video Hugh
Hi, thanks for this. FYI: your stereo is fine with music but, with speech, it is only sounding in the left channel. You may only be recording on one channel, else something is going wrong when combining onto the audio track. Hope that helps. cheers.
Thanks for that Seb.
I have had issues with sound quality before and have just bought a cheap mike but I think it only records on one channel.
@@narrowboatmaggiemay Hi, thanks for your reply. Take care.
Whats up with the film?
I dont know, what is happening?
@@narrowboatmaggiemay It looks like your bow camera its jerking not playing smoothly cheers
It looks like it was on time lapse.
@@louiseng7272 Thanks Louise thought my computer was playing up cheers
When you throw your anchor you throw it then drag it back slowly and it will catch onto something. I've only done a short tidal stretch myself on the great ouse past salters lode but I grew up where you had this happen and it's a scary bit of water especially when the tide is on the turn, glad you avoided anything too disastrous
Talk about nerve racking
Yes it was at the time , but all good experience. "What does not kill you makes you stronger" as they say.
Thanks for watching
