  • Fletch returns to the Trafalgar Holden Museum in Gippsland, Victoria, to see the latest additions to the museum. Neil Joiner from the museum takes Fletch on a tour of the new exhibitions that take you back to the 1800s and the beginning of Holden, or Holden Frost as it was known, some 90 years before the first Holden, the 48-215, was produced.
The exhibition is a village-type environment with shops focusing on the various eras and the businesses that Holden was involved in, like saddlery, leatherwork, and even animal husbandry, to name a few. Interestingly, the museum discovered a Holden Frost 128-page catalogue from around 1900 with many goods on offer - Holden was very diversified back then. It wasn’t till the early 1880’s that they ventured into coachwork and produced horse-drawn buggies, one of which is on display.
Around 1910, Holden produced their first sidecar and entered coachwork with the first coach body in 1916. Legislation introduced in 1917 to tax car imports entering the country with bodywork saw the evolution of coach building and, later, complete manufacturing of motor vehicles. The new exhibition walks through each of these critical milestones.
Outside there is a recreation of the first Trafalgar Holden Dealership, Charlesworth Motors, which was the local garage and panel shop. Back then, the dealerships were relatively modest, only large enough to fit two cars and two people, with a small workshop alongside.
In addition to the new exhibits, there are plenty of Holdens on display, from the first to the last.
For Peter Brock fans, there is a room dedicated to his cars and memorabilia. Including Brock’s first-ever “paddock bomb”, an Austin 7 that he bought for five pounds and learned to drive around his parent’s farm as a youngster. The FX Holden raced at Goodwood in England in 2006 and took it up to the British. A display wouldn’t be complete without his 1974 LH Torana, boasting an impressive 350HP. Tucked in there is another Brock icon, his Austin A30, a tiny vehicle sporting a 6-cylinder engine. All are on loan to the museum and are a must-see for Brock fans and all motoring enthusiasts.
Last but not least is a display that focuses on the design department of Holden. With an impressive cutaway clay model of the last Holden Commodore ever built, giving insight into the craftsmanship that goes into the development of motor vehicles.
Fletch always recommends visiting the Trafalgar Holden Museum, and now there is even more reason to venture there and with these new exhibits.

I got taken here for my 50th birthday last year and found that beautiful Premier with it's build date from the day before I was born. What a special moment. Yes it has aged a lot better than I have. hahaha I decided that day to hunt for a HZ wagon and relive my childhood.

I used to go here with my Mum when I was a kid to get milk and yoghurt. Visited there a couple of years ago. Great to see all the old Holdens. Reminds me of my younger days when me and all my mates had Holdens. My brother still has a pretty nice 1960 FB. I also remember going into that old service station when I was a kid too. It used to have the old glass bottles of oil and a guy would come out and fill your car. In our case a HG Holden Premier.

Renault 8, Mk 1 Cortina, 2 door LJ etc - all worth a fortune now, but undoubtedly less than the cost of dry storage in Sydney.
The LJ writeoff was $400. That ruined your day!

I collect Australian Militaria from WW1 and WW2 and I have a couple of Australian Light Horse leather ammunition pouches that have Holden and Frost ADELAIDE 1916 stamped on the back, interesting. So even during WW1 they were still making leather equipment for the ANZACS.

Just wanted to ask you Fletch, what about the Brougham??!! They were much maligned for many years, but I always saw them for the classy, long bodied beauties they are. That rear sheet metal extension and unique taillights really do it for me 😋.
I have a HK Brougham with vinyl delete roof, reclining bucket seats, floor console with shifter for the powerglide, and air conditioning.
Always wondered how rare the console and bucket seat option were, because I've never seen another Brougham with those options except for in a period accessory brochure that I have.

The Sydney all Holden day was cancelled yet again this year, this time due to flooding, rather than Covid. There's been nothing here since 2019. You have to wonder why they couldn't just move the event to another location or date, like Ford did. So nothing here until August 2023...........unless that's cancelled as well!
In the meantime, I'll try to get to one of these museums, which always appear to be in Victoria, when I can get time off work.
I just hope every Holden still in existence will never be crushed as they all now have huge investment potential.

    • @jb7591
      @jb7591 Před rokem +1

yes, nsw AHD committee are hopeless, easier to cancel than to find an alternate venue, made worse by the fact two weeks after the original august date the camping show went ahead with their event at the same venue. 2023 nsw AHD is not guaranteed as several clubs are not participating. However there is an ACT Holden day at the end of September.

The First Premier was the 1962 EJ and yes it did have a genuine leather interior and three speed Hydramatic transmission however it was coupled to the last of the Grey Motor(138 ci) and condemned to a 24 second quarter mile.
With the new look HD, the Premier experienced a substantial Price drop and with that it had a two speed Powerglide replacing the three speed Hydramatic and Morrokide Vinyl replacing the leather interior of the EJ/EH. Disc brakes were included in the option list once the king pin front end was replaced with the ball joint upgrade midway through production. The One on display was a HD Special sedan which was ofcourse the volume seller. Whilst many have demoted the HD to being a disaster or a flop infact it wasn't. The HD actually holds the record for being the highest selling Holden per month ever and it achieved this in March/April/May period of 1965. Whilst it didn't hold its resale value as good as earlier models, and it did experience a sales drop during the rise of XP Falcon and AP6 Valiant sales, it certainly was not a flop. infact it outsold it's rivals Combined as did previous models.

Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-(
In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN & BEFVO laws)!!!
