As for those who are unenlightened as to why the Minigun is named the Mini-Gun despite being so large of a gun, this is an explanation. In the military, small-arms like the M-16, M4, and ARs for example aren't called guns but RIFLES due to the rifling in their barrels. Pistols aren't called "guns" in the military either but a "service pistol."
In the military, "GUNS" refer to the types of artillery pieces that uses an explosive charge to propel a projectile(rockets and missiles not included). Artillery pieces are what you would call large shooting machines that can't be operated by a single person or if so, it wouldn't be practical. For example, cannons, howitzers, anti-aircraft artillery, mortar systems, rockets and missile systems are classified as artillery pieces. Again, a gun is a sub-category of artillery pieces that uses an explosive charge to fire a projectile. A cannon/howitzer to be exact.
That's why cannons firing in succession 21 times to salute the arrival of an important person is called a "21 Gun Salute." While rifles firing during a military funeral is never called a gun salute but a "3 volley salute." The minigun is often mounted on anti-aircraft systems and is like a mini-artillery piece, hence it's name.
We're talking about Military Terms here. The point is, in the military, a RIFLE is not called a GUN but a RIFLE because it's a RIFLE. I hope this would end the debate in the comment section.
there is simpler explanation. Mini Gun stands for Mini Gatling Gun, and his parent, full-size Gatling Gun is pretty big fuckin Gun. So smaller Gatling Gun is just Mini-Gun for short.

where does someone get an airsoft minigun? scratch that - how does someone afford one?
Most retailers carry them for 2-3k,
Stuffed_Shark for that i can get a very nice rifle, but i do realize the craftsmanship that goes into airsoft machines is on par with firearms, probably even more complex... but still. a rich man's toy.
2-3k isn't that much but if spend it just for shits and giggles, it is.

you want a really awesome weapon? Try a Gauss cannon. It is basically a wing-mounted mini-gun capable of 6000 rounds per SECOND. Imagine that. 6000 Airsoft rounds sent down-range every second. That would be AWESOME!!!
Umm gauss cannons are actually cannon type weapons that uses magnetic fields to accelerate metal projectiles to super-sonic speeds. The guns that are cabeable to shoot even close to that amount of rounds downrange per second is project metalstorm launchers, wich are still just a prototype weapons.
r3xv Actually, I meant the Vulcan cannon, aka the m62a1. It fires 6000 Rpm (rounds per minute), which is 100 Rps (rounds per second). There is no faster firing weapon in the world.

protoborg I'm pretty sure you mean the m61a1-a2 20mm cannon, Fires at 4,000 or 6,000 for a1, 6,600 for a2. Carry's a maximum of 526 rounds. And is hydraulically powered, and uses 24 vdc to set off the electrically primed round. And it is most certainly not wing mounted, its internally mounted currently in the f-18. Where do I get my info? Marine corps f-18 Aviation ordnanceman gunshop.

In technical terms a M16 isn't a gun it is a rifle and gun is something like a cannon or field artillery so its called the minigun because it is almost like a small artilery gun.

Rifles and pistols are guns you numbnut.
Any weapon that fires a projectile using a propellant is considered as a gun, it can be from Pistol to Field artillery or Naval artillery, whatever.
Pistol, Rifle or Cannon is more precise definition of a gun.

To really answer your question, "Mini" is in reference to it's older and bigger brother, the Vulcan which fires 20mm ammo while the minigun uses 7.62mm ammo.
It is considered to be a "miniaturized" version of the M167 Vulcan 20mm antiaircraft gun.
