- I meet with charity team 'Unlock Runcorn', poised to start work on a huge £25m canal restoration which will see a new boat lift, a two-staircase lock, marina, and innovative incline boat lift to reconnect the Bridgewater Canal in Runcorn to the Manchester Ship Canal. I uncover the history of the original locks, and check out the scale of the works that are set to begin soon near the famous Silver Jubilee Bridge and Mersey Gateway.

Absolutely fabulous vlog Colin - you never cease to amaze me with your enthusiasm and interest. You put the BBC/ITV etc to shame with your reporting skills!
Aww, thank you sooooooooo much! 👍🏻💜
I will second this...color me impressed.
And I'll third this....absolutely super vlog. Really enjoyed this after a busy day. And I'll look forward to visiting it in the future! I'll probably throw some money their way too.
Agreed - you should at least contact Netflix and suggest series. There would appear to be huge interest for the inland water ways in America.
Two pints of lager and a packet of crisps please!😉
the passion to restore history is amazing. hopefully they succeed in their endeavors.
Let's hope so!
I hope so too, but as soon as he mentioned "9 metre boat lift", and "Inclined Plane" I began to suspect it'll never become reality. So much big $$$ engineering, not just locks and concrete.
Thank goodness there are still people with vision and passion for keeping the history of England's canals alive. Fantastic vlog, Colin!
Cheers Jill 👍🏻
Colin, not only do you provide us with the history of the canals and area, but now you’re telling us about the future too! Wow! Great episode, hopefully you’ll be able to travel the new section in the future.
I hope Shaun enjoys getting his feet done! 🦶
That's the plan!
That was fantastic! It is good to see people passionate about the past and also trying to revitalize history to make a future.
Well said!
I live in Runcorn and I’m also a big supporter of the unlock Runcorn campaign. It’s great to see my favourite boat channel talk about this and let more people see the opportunity to see this.
Gonna be ace!
Fantastic news about Runcorn with ambitious plans not only for a boat lift but also an inclined plane! I can't wait to see this taking shape.
Thanks guys for keeping up the interest in how the canals were developed
Fingers crossed!
Its so amazing the care and passion people have towards the canals. But its no wonder - they're an asset to everywhere they pass through. A network built on volunteers' goodwill and working for the benefit of everyone around. Great to see this project! I live fairly near to a canal, and as with so many of them, it only exists as a navigable waterway because of the efforts of volunteers and fundraising past and present, restoring the whole thing from a blocked, dry state. Now all the towns and villages along it have this great asset. If the team of Unlock Runcorn can pull this off there's no doubt it will be a great addition to Runcorn both now and for a long time to come :)
Let's hope so! 👍🏻👍🏻
I live in Runcorn, thank you for putting Runcorn on your CZcams . X
You’re welcome 😊
Btw guys Its called Dukesfield the area, the house where you connect and talk about is my mum lives there we been fighting for this for years before the houses where built it had warehousing and large docks which as kids we named the Salty and used to have tanneries also, but Halton council has tried to scupper us selling on the lands by selling to developler's
Glad the unlock team are getting on it
Hello from Tennessee USA. It would be fantastic to see the old canal reopened. To me it is sad to see history and historical place just erased. Just because some people find it not useful anymore doesn't me it should be destroyed.
As always thank you two for sharing your lives and travels with us. Stay safe and have a fantastic week.
I hope so too
Hi Patricia! I now live in Nashville, but am originally from Worsley, arguably the home of the modern inland canal and the source of the Bridgewater Canal.
Hi Patricia - I think it's amazing that someone all the way away in Tennessee is someone watching a video all about Runcorn, the town where I was born and raised!! I am passionate about my home town's local history and I agree it would be great to see a slice of the past reinstated. So much of the local history is gone now but there are still some great hidden secrets tucked away! x
@@nicolagandy5934 I always think history is very important. And it is sad that some people don't care if they destroy the past. I see that alot here. I do plan on taking time to visit England in the next few years.
@@andymoss that sound like a really nice place.
Great story. So appreciate the passion of the local people who are making a difference for their community
It's great! 👍🏻
I work nights in Afghanistan and this is literally the highlight of my week.
Aww thank you!
Y’all should be paid canal system spokesmen. You do an awesome job presenting all types of information on the canal system. 👍
Aww, thanks Sonny
Spot on video. I think that honestly this is one of your best productions that I have seen to date. At one point I felt like I was watching a documentary or a news cast. The video editing is phenomenal as well as the footage and the two gentlemen that you had in the video being interviewed were both excellent guests. Well done! -from Canada
Thanks so much, Kevin. I’m sure they’ll be glad to read that 👍🏻
Absolutely exceptional 'documentary'....no other word for it...I think we can forget words like vlog now, or video...this is just quality.
Wow! Thank you, Jeremy!
I’ve been a member of unlock Runcorn for over a year and this is far clearer description of what’s going on than the website gives
I hope it all comes off 👍🏻
Colin, your screen transitions, especially the fades between historical shots and modern, are top notch! I feel like I'm watching a Ken Burns documentary. Very interesting and well done!
Wow, thanks!
Really enjoy the semi-documentary sidebars from your tours. Informative, well-researched and well written additions to your touring. Much appreciated!
Glad you enjoyed it!
nothing semi about them, they're ace!
Oh, the memories. Sitting on a derelict lock gate in summer 1965 (before they were filled in) while taking a break from painting the bottom of our boat in Runcorn dry dock. With a transistor radio playing Sonny & Cher's "I got you babe".
Hehe! Glad we could bring that one back for you 👍🏻
I'm from the old town of Runcorn and I've traced my family back to the early 1700s there, probably even longer, including a few generations living on the water. The more I learn about our local history, the more passionate about it I become. Great project to regenerate these spaces and share some of our history and heritage with visitors and locals alike. :) x
Nice one!
Hi, from the USA (Pennsylvania). My wife’s family can be traced back to Runcorn. Really cool project. Hopefully we can visit in the future!
I love the way you fade the old photos into present day. Cx
Thanks, Christine 👍🏻
My grandparents settled in Runcorn late 30s after collecting Pot ash from ICI to take to the potteries . My grandad eventually got a job at ICI and the rest is history. I still live here. Canals are in my blood .This is amazing . Granny and Grandad would be so happy .
👍
Reflexologist here, happy to give you a treatment Colin for a bit of Shaun’s cake and a glide up (or down) a bit of a canal!
If the Runcorn project goes ahead, those properties’ value will sky-rocket!
I’ve also been racking my brains as to who Shaun reminds me of and it finally came to me whilst watching re-runs of Robin of Sherwood ..... it’s Friar Tuck -- it’s the voice and the humour and something in the face. Shaun and the actor Phil Rose, probably hail from the same place.
Enjoy the sunshine
ooooh, free reflexology!
@@FoxesAfloat not free exactly - Cake is definitely required 😂😋😂
Amazing vlog. I’m so glad that the canal restorations are still ongoing. Relinking major connections of the past, unlocking new economic potential, and creating new navigation loops to the system is exiting and crucial to the continuing evolution of the UK canals. Always informative, humorous and brilliant. Thanks guys. Cheers from Florida 🌴🌴🌴🌴
Yes! Thank you!
The bit in the outtakes where you-know-who spots a you-know-what was hysterical. Laughed so hard my right side went into spasm. 💖💖💖🌵
Glad you enjoyed it 😂
Runcorn my home town for 40 years before I moved to Chester. Its great to see how much is planned for runcorn and the boating community. Awesome vlog guys. Made my day
Aww, cheers!
Very impressed with the canal restoration and waterside development planned by the Runcorn group. I’m sure it will bring tourism and narrow boaters to the area. Colin, you are so skilled at historical narration, and your passion for English canals/history is wonderful. Shaun, all the best for healthy feet, and so glad you’ve both had your “jabs”! I’ve had my first, but we have to wait 112 days for the second jab in Ontario, as we have to share as many first jabs as possible. Canada is way behind on receiving enough serum. See you next week, guys!
Thanks, Pamela! x
What a brilliant idea! The whole of Runcorn needs to get behind this as it will be an enormous boon to the local economy.
Totally agree! 👍🏻
Very enjoyable vlog, thank goodness there are people with the vision and dedication to renew and preserve the canals for us all.
Absolutely!
You killed me softly with your outtakes, all four of you, what a pleasure to watch/hear real people, so awesome 👏
Nice one. Thanks, Peter! (Hope you liked the drone footage - I had to get special permission to fly near the bridges!)
What a great vision for the cabal and for Runcor. Lovely to hear about something really positive! Thanks so much 😘
You are so welcome!
I live in Runcorn, thank you for a brilliantly interesting video about our town 😁 I really hope this project goes ahead, I think it'll be absolutely amazing, and I really appreciate the effort and passion that Unlock Runcorn are putting into it.
Fingers crossed! It is a really great project 👍🏻
So what was you worried about with this vlog ??? It was so informative, it kept me listening and looking no problem. What amazing positive people overseeing this large project, sounds great for the whole area. An excellent vlog --even without Otis in xxx
Aww, thanks, Susan!
OMGIDDYAUNT! That restoration seems staggering.
Excellent show, lads. You two could direct documentaries for a living.
You've put me in a right good frame of mind, yet again. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it
I live in runcorn and never knew about this!! What an amazing project that will make a massive difference to the area. You are such a gentleman, so complimentary of our tired looking town. The drone footage was amazing too. My boyfriend and I love your videos for the interesting facts your point out along the way.
Awesome! Thank you!
Very interesting for Runcorn restoration for canal bringing more tourists to town centre
Definitely!
Probably one of the most interesting episodes yet an absolute pleasure to watch
And of course the Waterloo pub was the exterior setting for the pub in Two pints of lager
It was! (we tell you that in next week's) 😂👍🏻
The pubs in two pints
Waterloo=now a buddist monks template across from canal who are very friendly.
Wellington pub(Two pints pub was called in show the Mayhew) over the road from the locks
Met the cast, good times in runcorn
Colin, you had no need to worry, this was a really interesting Vlog, I’ve never seen anything of Runcorn except the station on my many childhood trips with my nana from Nuneaton to Liverpool (change at Crewe!). She was always doing people’s feet as a chiropodist. 😃
Haha! Nice one. Thanks Elaine! x
Brilliantly presented vid and so encouraging to see such enthusiasm. I can’t help wonder how they are managing to raise the millions needed for such a huge project but have no doubt their confidence and determination will find a way. It’s so great to see the preservation and restoration of the canal networks throughout the UK.
They're confident the funding is there 👍🏻
Good evening Faffers. Here at last. Unlock Runcorn must be very grateful for putting their plans out there. I echo the other commentaries on the quality of this vlog - again.
Here endeth autism week. I was on a conf call today and saw it on a banner. Thought of you Colin. Happy weekend guys. 🍷🍷🤔🍷
Thanks so much Chris, as always! x
Brilliant as always guys and a Dinnerladies line to boot, a brilliant project to highlight!
Many thanks! (and from Babs) 😂
I love these canal restouration flogs, passionate people in Runcorn, I like it👍
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Colin & Shaun, wow that is one ambitious but very interesting and exciting set of plans, I really hope they can pull it off because that will make a massive difference to the area. Thank you for sharing, much love to you both & Otis of course. xx 💖
Cheers Sue 👍🏻
A roller coaster ride for narrowboats, Whoopee! Tha's an amazing project. Thanks chaps. Cheers
Hehe. Gonna be so cool!
What an amazing project to rejoin the Bridgewater canal to the Manchester Ship Canal! Brilliant segment! Hope Sean's feet are OK!
Haha! They're fine 😂
How interesting re opening that old canal. Restoring a bit of History for future generations to enjoy.. Thank you for sharing your views from your backyard..
Afternoon gents! That is an IMMENSE project, absolutely fascinating! While I am nowhere near Runcorn, it'll be on my "places to visit" list for sure, be it by boat or by road!
Great video as always chaps, enjoy the nice sunny weekend... shouldn't have said that, it'll jinx it :o
Hope you enjoy it!
Thanks for the info on this project, we all need more canals. The best days of my life are spent walking or riding along the canals it's the best place to unwind, & your can't put a price on that.👍😁😎🐶🌞
Couldn't agree more!
You learn something new every time you watch your vlogs . Old Trafford I thought it was in London xx daft me 😂
Gosh I was expecting them to say 10 years. How exciting and glorious will that be, hope they got a lottery grant.
They're confident that funding is about to be awarded 👍🏻
Always happy to see the silver foxes notification pop up.
Glad to hear it
Aw Colin. What a brilliant vid. So exciting to hear the plans for the Manchester Canal loop. How great for the town to have all those changes to look forward to. A huge project indeed. You are a wonderful documentary maker. But like they say" alongside every good man, etc etc. Hi Sean. I am sure you are a huge part of Colins success. God bless you both.
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow that's very exciting to see the rejuvenation plans for the canal at Runcorn.
Can't wait!
Hi guys. It was so interesting to hear about the new project in Runcorn. Something to look forward to in the future and some good news which we all need. Stay safe.
Cheers!
Anyone have a count on how many times Shaun has said, "You can't say that..." to Colin on these videos? Love these guys!
Hundreds 🤣
@@saemi74 Seems a bit low, but ok ;)
I’m so glad I found you guys. I love canal life and the history behind it. You are making it a treat to watch. Thanks 👍
Our pleasure, Martin 👍🏻
I am nearly up to date, but I can watch you guys over again and again. Just such pleasant vlogs.
When you catch up...... You have to start all over again from the beginning...... It's the law 🤣
I moor at Preston Brook as my main mooring and will be back on Sunday. Give me a wave as you pass! I might well join the Restoration Society so thanks for the information.
NB I stayed in Castlefield last night having done the Rochdale 9 and all was peaceful thank goodness.
Ah, we've already passed to get off the Bridgewater before our free time runs out 👍🏻
A £25m Canal Restoration?
Well, whatever the cost it's worths to keep you two guys afloat.
Take it as a personal compliment 😎
Well said!
Compared to the cost of building new roads these days thats real value for money.
Its not just the boats. Cycling along towpaths is far nicer, and safer, than using roads.
On that note, having space for tents as well as camper vans would be really useful. Like boats, daily distance is limited.
Thirty years since I left M/c for Ireland yet these possibilities are exciting.
Stumbled across your CZcams channel by chance and I’ve watched 150 episodes in 4 days 😂😂😂 you both crack me up!
150 in 4 days???? And your sanity has held up? 🤣
Your Vlogs that are of a documentary nature/style are your best work! They have been well presented, and are a joy to watch. You have no need to be concerned over the next one, it will be brilliant!!!!
Wow, thank you!
That project sounds amazing, I'm hoping that Chesterfield can get reconnect to the trent.
That would be fab!
Yay for the Runcorn project! BRILLIANT to see canal building still alive!! How wonderful it woild be to see a lot more being built countrywide. Shaun, enjoy your tootsies 'being done' and yes Colin, you have got lovely feet, l have often thought so, very shapely and elegant! xx
Aww, thank you!
Thanks guys hope you're staying well. Fantastic vlog once again. You need your own TV show on the TV. See you next week.
Cheers, Shane!
Just made a donation online to “Unlock Runcorn” in appreciation of a great vlog! I hope everyone who enjoyed can become a member of the UR for £5 per year! You have both honed your skills in the last couple of years to make excellent videos. You are our Sunday morning coffee date! My only wish is that in addition to Outtakes we could get a few “Otis-takes” at the end of each vlog. He is so darned handsome!! Much love from Arlington, VA USA
Thanks for that! I'm sure they will appreciate your support 👍🏻
Tea and biccies have been thoughtfully consumed whilst catching up with you, chaps. Beautifully done, as ever and the Runcorn boys were lovely too. Very best of luck to the project! 🫖🍪
Our pleasure!
I love how you manage to fit in the comic relief, history and enthusiasm for the future. Your videos are incredibly slick, well edited and informative. Great Job!
Wow, thank you!
Thank you, Colin, for the history we are very pleased you have an interest in history. This was fantastic and are looing forward to more of the wonderful history on the canal. You could become a historian of note looking forward to the next one. Your camera work is explant.
Many thanks!
Good luck to the Runcorn Restoration Project. Can't wait to see you guys vlogging its progress and eventual completion.❤️
Gonna be ace!
Excellent video as always guys. It's always good to see and hear Maud howling with laughter.
Thanks 👍
Hey fellas, another great and informative vlog. Thank you both. You both really deserve to have your own TV show! Thanks again! 👍
Maybe one day!
I wish you well with this project. My great grandfather, born in Runcorn, had his first job at the age of 12 leading a barge horse. Went on eventually to own a Mersey Flat.
Wow!
I’ve only lived in Runcorn for around 5 years and this video popped up on CZcams so I thought ok I will give this a watch to see what it’s all about, loved it and really hope that the team can achieve their goals with the canal 👍
It would be great!
A podiatrist is your foot doctor in the US. You should be the narrator of a Runcorn video promoting the project. I'm excited just watching this video!
Wow, thank you!
Evening boys
Loving the new improved haircuts
Good luck to everyone on the Runcorn project it will be wonderful when it’s all completed.
Hope Otis is ok as didn’t see much of him today.
Have a great weekend in the sunshine ☀️
Stay safe
Love Kim x x
Thanks 👍
My husband and I really enjoy your Channel even though we have not tried any canals in Canada. You both provide a very informative and entertaining view of life on a narrow boat while highlighting many interesting places as you journey. Glad to see you are staying safe during these times where self isolation is a necessity it is important to have a good sense of humour, a strong partnership and thoughtful planning to make the best of it. You both are an excellent examples of these traits. I have tried Shaun’s shortbreads and the problem is that they are too good and disappear too quickly.
Looking forward to more delightful blogs and Colin, the video editing and voiceovers and amazing and ,I know from experience, take an incredible amount of patience and time. Well done you
Anita and Russ
Thanks so much guys!
I'm always impressed by how well you match the location and camera setup for the historic-to-modern photos - nicely done yet again!
Thanks, Aaron 👍🏻
What a huge project for only being a few short years away! Get yer diggers out, boys! And Shaun, I'm sure they'll need some entertainment in that new visitor's centre. No one rides for free, ya know! You two just keep coming with the great topics and the history. It's great! And tell Otis, he can get his paws dirty too!
haha! we'll be back 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Wow, great story of renewed life for an old cut.
Glad you liked it!
Great video guys. Great highlighting the Unlock Runcorn project! Thanks gents.
Our pleasure!
Absolutely fascinating vlog about an incredible exciting project. PLEASE keep us posted regarding the project’s progress. (Thanks also for all the 👣 references! 🤪)
We will!
Not sure exactly on the timeline of this video but the charity has received the necessary funding from the government’s ’Towns Fund’ and work has already started in places :)
Go Runcorn, awesome! Thanks for another great video guys. Good to hear that the canals are to again bring prosperity to a town.
You bet!
Another totally absorbing vlog, love it. The laughs along the way are priceless.
Thanks so much!
So nice to hear of Canal restoration plans. I do hope they launch a you tube channel to document the works. Thanks for high lighting this project. Stay safe and well you 3
Cheers Joss
These types of projects are exciting. I went to see the Stirling Wheel several years ago, as a tourist attraction, and marvelled at the engineering. This could have the same sort of 'fan-base'. I like the idea of a day-trip around the loop.
Yeah, gonna be ace!
Really hope they can pull off recreating this canal section. Looking forward to seeing Silver Fox pass through it!
You and me both!
probably Silver Fox II or whatever the name for the new 60 foot boat will be, great!
Thank you to the pair of you. Always cheer me up
Cheers, Geoff!
Excellent! I love that people and communities are working to open up old sections of canals and improve there towns around projects like this! It’s amazing the cost now considering what it was built for originally. Local companies could help out, schools and colleges should be included to help with the program and get younger people interested in the canals and see that it’s a good thing for the community. Great job guys!
Absolutely!
Look forward to my Fridays here in Canada! you guys always put a smile on my face! looking forward to next weeks vlog!
Yay! Thank you!
Very interesting and informative vlog! Those plans of the Unlock Runcorn group sound very grandiose but exciting for the area. I am sure that when you tell us about all the possibilities you have for future travel that you have already planned that out and are just keeping us in suspense! Stay well and keep on boating.
Fingers crossed it happens!!
You two just keep getting better and better!
Aww, thanks, David!
Look forward to seeing that project completed, love the old photo merging with the new,, keep as many of those coming please guys.
Cheers Phil 👍🏻
Very enjoyable and informative lads. I’m based in Scotland and now considering a narrow boat holiday.
Glad you enjoyed it
would be cool if they could open up the St Helens Canal up through to St Helens, one of the oldest canals in the country. Could cross the Mersey at high tide and head up there
That would be ace!
Wow that's quite a project! Awesome job vlogging it for the world!
It really is!
This great news - visited Runcorn numerous times for work. I wish them success with this project.
Thanks, Jeremy!
Friday at last, always worth waiting for, i've polished off an entire packet of dark chocoloate biscuits while watching this...
Nice one 😋
A whole packet? 😮 I'm jealous.
It was most interesting hearing about that new link!
Fingers crossed it's ready soon! x
Huge job! Good luck to them all - Thanks for outlining their very ambitious plans.
Our pleasure!
Hi Colin& Shaun great vlog today hope all 3 of you have a great weekend, love Dan&Karen
Cheers guys. You too!
Sounds like a great project. Good to hear they are thinking about ampervan park ups too. Not too far from where we live, will be great to visit.
Fingers crossed!
