- Two motor cycle enthusiasts from Granard, County Longford have built a wall of death.
Michael Donoghue and Connie Kiernan explain how the wall of death came about, and what it is like to live next to it. Their story inspired the film ‘Eat the Peach’ (1986) in which two young Irish men transfixed by an Elvis Presley film in which a carnival cyclist performs an act on the wall of death, decide to put together their own wall of death.
This episode of PM was broadcast on 27 March 1979. The reporter is Pat Kenny.
PM was a magazine series reporting on aspects of Irish life with interludes for music from Irish performers. PM first began on Tuesday, 20 September 1977 and ran until Thursday, 12 April 1979.
I saw these lads perform back in the day, during the Rose of Tralee festival. The good old days. When the festival was a serious session
The inspiration for the film Eat The Peach.
Had forgotten that!
Was thinking same thing. Can not find copy of that film, wonder if it holds up

@@Kevin-rw4yw have you got a copy?
I recall seeing this on the news when it aired. I was only 20 back then and working in a factory and I also recall this wall of death report being the topic of conversation in the canteen during the break. Little did I know then that a few years later I would be a motorcycle cop myself in Limerick and still riding motorbikes today at 63.
Ha ha ha I remember this on the news when I was a kid fantastic love it
Pat Kenny's first interview assignment for RTE. Country lads that lived the dream.
Go on Longford. ....so you did have a past
Ha ha great vid two legends right dere them.boys still alive or wat
Connie still alive
Of course the boys had to go one better than Evel Knievel, by hopping in a rocket bike and firing over Glendalough powered by poteen, the vapours knocked them out, so they didn't know what hit them.... Brockagh mountain! BANG!! ⛰️🔥😀
The Dukes of Longford
Credit to all involved
I read that title as Riding the Whale of Death........coincidentally that was my nanna's nickname.
And, after a lot of argument, much of it circular, Mexico paid for it.
Two free spirits;absolute legends were/are. When Honda 175s ruled. Like the BSA 250 also.
To all the generation z we were well able to entertain ourselves without internet back then.
Them boys built a new updated wall of death a year ago, never lost it!
Back in the days when there was literally f%ck all to do...
You know people existed happily for literally years before and without social media right!?
@@kitsilanomusician2669 Of course, but you clearly have no idea what life was like in Ireland in the 70's and 80's
@@eamoc Don't mean to be rude but you sound defeatist. Lots of things to do, even if you've no money. Just need to be creative in your thinking. Nelson Mandela was able to keep himself occupied in a wardrobe prison cell, so there's hope for us all. Exercise is free, for example. If you've got nothing to do, you've at least got the time to do anything that's free. Run, meditate, play a musical instrument, join the library, walk in nature, swim in the sea, meet & talk to people, play a sport, learn a new language. All free.
@@kitsilanomusician2669 Sure, tell that to the hundreds of thousands of young people who emigrated every year...
@@eamoc OK well if you're talking about work rather than hobbies then yeah sure..
They later rebranded the wall of death as Supermacs.
Where are these lads now ? Fair play to them all the same.
