      Wait till you hear it with mediums. It booms like a damn cannon! I jam with a friend girl of mine and she plays very softly. I’ll actually kind of mimic a bass in certain songs and it’s a good match with her style

    Man... you have skills!!!! I've been an Alvarez fan for a couple decades . They have always been a fantastic value! This bluegrass model is incredible . I saw another CZcams channel do a similar comparison a few months ago. I just had to get my hands on one. I was super lucky to find one listed by a Chicagoland pawnshop on ebay for $375. Next morning I was there when the shop opened. The guitar is like new. I offered $350 and they took it.!!! What a steal!!! ....Your video confirms that you don't have to spend a couple thousand dollars to own a quality instrument. I'm now a subscriber to your channel.

    I have a d-18 that i love to play. At $2,500 it should play and sound great but I noticed that, to me, the $600+ Alvarez actually sounded better than the D-28 when flatpicked and held its own when fingerpicked. An incredible value! Your playing was great.

      Both sound great... Alvarez takes the edge, though... in my opinion. A wee tad more mellow, yet has the tone in the high end that I prefer. Your playing, though, makes both of them shine!!!

    Very concise and to the point comparison. The recording of both instruments were well balanced and clear, and demonstrated the characterisics of both instruments very well. Not all content creators get this right, so thank you for the extra effort. I have both the MD60BG and the MD70EBG (rosewood B/S). Someone else mentioned that a lot of the differences being heard between the Martin and the Alvarez here reflected the woods used on the back and sides, and I would have to concur. Despite the similarities in overall construction between the MD60 and MD70, I can hear the Low/High emphasis on the MD70 associated with most rosewood -back guitars, and the midrange focus associated with mahogany B/S guitars on the MD60 when I compare them side-by-side. It would be nice to see a similar shootout between the Martin HD28 and the MD70, which would make a better basis for a one-on-comparison.... focusing solely on the effects of construction and QC on tone as opposed to construction, QC, AND tonewood (with the B/S tonewood differences being a confounding variable in this video). Excellent playing on the demos! I think you did a great job pulling out the best performance in both instruments.

    My Alvarez MD60BG is out of the box green,I think roughly a year old,and I can tell its gonna open up and be a great instrument. You have some great skills, very gifted .there is alot of hype behind the Alvarez MD60BG, and it's been compared to Martin and Gibson along with other big name instruments, what I'd like to see is three Alvarez's compared to each other, consistency is where I think most, not all company's mess up.i played 3 different ones before I made a purchase,all were very consistent. Iv always loved and drooled over Martin D18's untill I paid way to much and found out how temperamental they are.i cant say one's better or one has a better sound, but I purchased my Alvarez for 800$ and I bought the D18 used for 21 hundred, I since sold the Martin and lost money and I can say I miss it,but I'll pass this Alvarez,God welling to my kids and hopefully they will pass it on to theirs...God bless you brother, thank you for sharing this..

    Well first off,
    Great playing. Now as for the comparison. Both the guitars sound excellent in their own way.The Martin has a very deep bass end and focused top end. The Alvarez was, to my ears very balanced across its spectrum. What it does it does well and the same for the Martin. Two similar guitars in regards to designated genre ( Bluegrass) but they shine individually and I’ll be honest I liked them both for what they offer. Two very different voiced guitars but very capable at what they are built to do. Personally I own a 75’ Alvarez 5024 as well as a 77’ Alvarez 5023 I also own Blueridge, Guild and Gibson. I have owned Martins in the past as well. All my guitars offer up tones that maybe only my ear hears but all the same each one is a tool when I’m playing a particular song or writing a song. I hear a tone in my head and go to my guitar library as I call it and select which one comes closest to what I hear in my head. I will say a lot of the time the Alvarez is the one I select. I love guitars and I have done so since I was nine years old I’m now 57 and music has made my life so much richer. In closing I will say that I really enjoy what you are doing here on CZcams and so much so that I have given you a like and have subscribed as well. Delvin I appreciate your passion for guitar, it lets me know I’m not alone in my acoustic guitar addiction and passion for music as well. Thanks again!🎶

    Thanks for your video! I currently own a Martin custom D-18, a Taylor 562ce 12 string and a New World Player classical. I've owned a Martin D-28, D-35, D-15, many high end Taylors, Collings, Bourgeois, Huss and Dalton and even a couple of Eastmans. After trying a friend's Alvarez MD60BG the other night, I would say that it is the best dreadnought that I've played in it's price range and it would be a worthy primary guitar, but certainly a super 2nd guitar for those who want a guitar to take to places that you'd never bring a more expensive guitar but is still a guitar you really enjoy playing.

    Here comes the rain.. That was an awesome video and comparison. I could definitely hear the difference but only because of the different tone woods used in each guitar. The Alvarez, with it's solid mahogany, has a mellow sweet tone. And of course the Martin HD28, with its rosewood construction, has higher more focused tones. But that's the difference between mahogany and rosewood and not the quality of the guitars. You did an awesome comparison and hopefully people out there that can't afford to get a Martin will look into guitars like Alvarez and Recording King.

    There is a Martin sound that has complimented so many songs from the 60s 70s and more that many pros have gravitated to it. It has helped make the song what it is. The Alverez is close and at the price point would be a good stepping stone to your Martin down the road. Or maybe you'd like A Yari..?

  • @SouperDave
    @SouperDave Před 9 měsíci

    Nobody seems to mention that the HD28 is rosewood back and sides while the MD60 is mahogany. That’s the main reason for the sound difference. They both sound great but some prefer the rosewood tone as I do. I have a 2007 Alvarez Masterworks MD350 with solid engelmann spruce top and solid Indian rosewood back and sides. Brand new. I fell for it instantly in a small locally owned guitar store after searching hard for a more affordable dreadnaught that felt and sounded like a D28 or D45. Traded my Fender acoustic and never looked back as it got me through many lonely angry nights during a divorce. When others hear or play it they’re just shocked. Alvarez Masterworks is an amazing option for someone without thousands to spend on a Martin, Taylor or Yairi. Masterworks are based on their Yairi partnership and like, just not built by the Yairi luthiers. Great value for a real deal instrument. Appreciate the video and your playing.

    Great job on the comparison, and what a player you are! I have to say that is one great sounding Martin and it does really suit you. I do get why people would say it's worth the money. However it is so important and especially for beginners, because for me when I began brands were much more important than they are now, to know that you aren't a slave to paying whatever Martin charges. Especialy since an HD-28 will run you 3400 dollars now and strictly speaking is still a factory guitar. Good to know there are other fantastic options, because the Alvarez doesn't sound any worse, it's just a different voice to my ears.

    One thing to keep in mind, the Martin is an ‘01 model and the Alvarez is much newer. That has a lot to do with sound and projection. My MD60EBG has gotten so much louder in two years of owning it. Jesus I just love the thing

    • @fourocker
      @fourocker Před rokem +3

      So the much newer Alvarez already has better projection, volume, tone, balance etc etc, imagine how good it will be when it's as old as the 3x the price Martin 👍

    To each their own. A lot of people in the comments are talking about the Alvarez having a 'mellow' tone that they like, but it's just less definition to my ears particularly in the midrange, not a mellower tone, just less sound there at all. But it sounds like a pretty good value for an intermediate player.

    I really enjoyed the comparison. The Martin seemed to have more volume and depth than the Alvarez otherwise both sounded great. I've owned an Alvarez professional model like $700 and enjoyed playing it. I currently own a Martin HD28 Ambertone color and it's my baby got it on sale for $2800 in 2015. I also play a Blueridge 180A Adirondack model without all the gauldy headstock inlay lol and enjoy it.

    That is a very nice comparison! I have an Alvie same model and every time I play it I feel that I stole it slightly used of a GC for a little over $400. Wonderful guitar, plays really well and in all likelihood all the guitar that I will ever need ....
    Money wise it is a no brainer. Get the Alvie and keep the rest of your money!
    But that Martin ... so warm, so full, so luscious ....

    Hands down the Alvarez sounded better. I found an Alvarez 5220 in a Tennessee antique shop 2 weeks ago in July 24 and played it a bit. For an old guitar I was impressed of the sound it put out after so many years. Your new one sounded better to me than the Martin.

    I enjoyed your playing very much. Nice to hear the guitars doing the talking. I have the MD60EBG and it is a guitar that's in my budget. I love it but every time I see it up against a HD28 it makes me want to own the Martin too. The Alvarez sounds like an Alvarez/Yairi. For its price point there isn't much that can touch it. A good HD28 has that Martin tonal quality that people are prepared to pay for. I'd pay for it too, if I could afford it.

  • @sunnyray7819

    I sold my Alvarez, I just wasn't in love with it. Maybe it would have sounded better as it aged more but I didn't feel like it was anything like a Martin honestly, as far as tone. The other thing I wasn't crazy about is the Indian Laurel fretboard and no markers. It's a really sweet sounding guitar for some things but mine wasn't really a Bluegrass machine for my style. I have a Recording King RD-328 coming now. Solid Rosewood body and Adirondack spruce. One piece mahogany neck. Hopefully this will be the one.. I love the sound of D-28 style guitars. Maybe some of the MD 60BG's sound different. I know the some had a different fretboard. Not sure that makes a huge difference but mine felt like the strings kinda caught up or my finger really on the Indian Laurel. Maybe it was just too dry to be fair. I still think it is a great guitar for someone that likes the sound. I wouldn't mind having one around it just wouldn't be my main guitar for most of my styles. Something like Beatles songs probably sound nice on it. I can say I would probably rather go for a Recording King RD-318, The Mahogany body version all solid and it's cheaper than the Alvarez. Poly body as opposed to nitro, I believe on the Alvarez. The Alvarez also did come with a pretty nice case, the Recording Kings don't come with anything extra. And if you find a Q-stock, it's guaranteed also. Q-stock have a blemish in the finish supposedly. But you can pick one up for 100-150 bucks cheaper even. So for less than 700 bucks with tax, as of Nov. 4 23', I got an all solid Rosewood and Adirondack guitar. The 318's are even cheaper. Just thought I would share this for those of you on a mission to find a Martin type guitar on a budget. I haven't found a better deal. The Alvarez is a mahogany body more like a D-18 for those that might not know all the specs. Th MD70BG is the Rosewood body Alvarez. Or with an E on the end for electronics. No electronics in the Recording King.

    While the Martin stands out with the unique sound; my take away from this video is that the Alvarez is an excellent guitar for the price; even more versatile, it will give one a good run for the money and a fancier/pricier instrument is no substitute for developing skill.

    Hi, thanks for the video, comparing the guitars.. they are both absolutely great, I have both, but I would like to point out that it is not completely correct, since they are made of different materials, there is a big difference between Alvarez mahogany and Martin rosewood. That's like comparing a d18 and a d28 to each other. Both great guitars, but completely different sound. By the way, greetings, I'm from the Czech Republic :d Europe, we have many excellent guitar manufacturers here, including Furch, BsG, Jolana and really another ten absolutely amazing manufacturers, they mostly make tiny series, but they are real masters. Check out some of them, it can be found on the net today in a second... Hey guys, enjoy your day.
