He honestly stated that the program has made significant progress since failing to qualify 5 years ago and there is no need for a radical rebuild. Reading between the lines shows you that he believes they can succeed under GGG. But he also said he would give 100% regardless of coach.

    1. The GGG-Reyna drama is childish
    2. There's no reason for the USSF to wait 6 months before hiring a new manager. Whether they stick with Gregg or not, the focus should be on keeping momentum. 2023 will be our busiest year as far as competitive matches

    It is amazing that so many commenters can't see the Pulisic was endorsing Berhalter to be retained. All of his talk of forward progress and good things in Qatar.
    Four years ago I would have chosen differently. While respecting Berhalter, I prefer older coaches at the end of their careers for National Team duty. But after he was chosen I'm going to be fair to him -- something so few can do.

    Pulisic also struggles for playing time at Chelsea, yet is always a professional. He was also replaced as team captain before the WC and didn't complain. Big baby Reyna should take note.

    Kudos for Pulisic for being on point. This raises 2 points 1. Does the federation know what their doing with regards to USMNT? 2. Is Gio Reyna really a good enough player to be worth putting up with the drama. I think the assumption is yes, but I wonder about that. I wonder if his teammates on the national team feel like he is someone they want to go to battle with?. Pulisic still plays at a high level internationally even with limited club time. Can Reyna do that?

    Always something going on with our USA team… it sucks because you can see they have so much pressure off the field… which effects there ability to probably perform on the field. I’m sure no player wants to be worried about who the best manager is or if they are going to have to go through a full rebuild. Thats so stressful 😮

      Well its not a soccer nation thats not good or bad its a cultural thing. Soccer simply isnt big. It is what it is. Less pressure cor the players to perform well because most of the country doesnt care about soccer lets be honest they dont even care about womens soccer, and they won 3 world cups. Soccer isnt huge. Same in my country baseball is the real sport and many play it soccer for bette ror for worse is seen as a childish sport.

    Berhalter, to me, was a great growth stepping stone in the right direction. But he's not that guy to transcend this USMNT talent to another level. A bunch of well known names aren't necessarily cut out for this IMO. We need a coach that has a special skillset and proven track record in teams that have squeezed every drop out of players, also tactically, all faith on Berhalter left in the USA vs Netherlands game. I called EVERY single goal seconds before they hit the net. That's how easy USA were to pick apart at the highest stage.

      ​@@joggyjames, jose ernesto pekkerman whose managed colombia and argentina quarter finals as well as revamp their youth systems or david Wagner currently Birmingham city manager i believe are good options Wagner plays a style similar to what that's seen german football which would benefit many of our players but I'd choose pekkerman who may have a bit of a language barrier but i think it could be overcome with a quality translator

      I still can't find one instance in the history of professional sports - where a husband/wife/father/mother/brother caping up for the athlete worked in the athletes favor.

      And that is just off the top of my head! How many NFL/NBA wives have complained about their husbands talents being misused or them not getting enough playing time???
      The point is - even if the family member has a point - they never win in the court of public opinion! Because it always comes off as sour grapes whiny BS.

    He's right in saying it's youth soccer level stuff, but the reynas think it'll work because that is actually how this sport works in this country. Parents weasel their way into getting their kids playing time no matter what cost. I had my own experiences with this in youth soccer and it's frankly disgusting. That's a big reason we aren't as good as we should be.

    Berhalter isn't worth holding on to if he can't work through player issues better than this. Gio acted like a child and his parents need to stay out of his career because he is a man and mommy and daddy aren't ever going to help his career by giving their opinion publicly. So either Berhalter and Gio need to sit down and have a talk and get past this, or Berhalter needs to be replaced, because Gio is more important to the USMNT than Berhalter.

      Berhalter was ALREADY not worth holding onto as of 1 year into his tenure as USMNT head coach, based on his player selection and formation philosophy alone. That could change, but until we see some evidence of that from him somewhere less impactful to the USSF, we're talking about the deck chairs on the Titanic when we talk about how he handled any particular off-field situations.

    Pot meet kettle. Pulisic literally wrote a book where he complained about his playing time under Tuchel. I like CP but he also has to take responsibility and stop trying to push.
    Greg Berhalter has said verifiable lies (not that the Reynas look good at all, but Gio is not the adult here). Gregg system sucks for the US and does not improve the team one bit for future. Too many players are basically playing out of position just to fit his system. I've said it once I'll say it again , you will lose a ton of support if you rehire Greg. STOP hiring systems coaches and get one that can work with what they have. I'd try a dutch coach who do well with smaller pools of options.

      @@warrenlwolfe Reyna was benched for disciplinary issues. GGG has made multiple statements on this that have been supported by subsequent reporting by investigative journalists. Frankly, Reyna should have been sent home based upon both his behavior and his parents. The video shows he was a sulky child on the pitch in the warmup games and when he was played during the WC - his movement was lackluster and his engagement was numb.
      Regarding Pepi - I 100% agree. Leaving him off and bringing Jordan Morris just makes no sense.

      What did Gregg do wrong in Qatar? Give me three valid reasons and I'll admit we need a change, but as far as I'm concerned, he did nothing wrong. The performance was on the players. Why do we need guys from European football to manager our country and why would they want to manage US Soccer? In my opinion, a coach matters to a certain extent (player selection tactical adjustments), but Gregg has gotten better and guys from European football will implement a completely different system when we already have a system that players are familiar with. Pulisic's point is we shouldn't need to get new coaching staff. We already have a good one.

To get through the last 8 teams in the 2026 World Cup, I just think we should get a European coach with more experience, great tactics etc. With so many European nations in the World Cup, it has never been easy to compete with those teams. As I have seen many successful soccer teams well-managed by the European coaches, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the USMNT in the right direction if we give a European coach a try.😊

However, if someone like Thierry Henry, whose reputation is defined more by his playing career then his managerial career, wants the job, we deny and stick with Gregg. Also for me it's quite embarrassing if we have to find a coach from another country to coach our national team. It kind of like belittles us and gives the world the impression that Americans can't play soccer if you know what I mean.

      that was also a completely different situation. Pulisic's dad has no tie to Chelsea and could not influence or try to, any decision Tuchel made. He was simply expressing his frustration as a father. Pulisic never said anything about the situation regarding what his father tweeted and always said he was happy to fight for his place in the team. did he want to play more and think he should have been? yes. did he slack off in training or try to get his manager fired? no. Two completely different situations.

Various world football organizations were saying he was a top 3 teen in the world. Right now the team is on fire and he’s struggling to get back into it after his injuries. He’s only 20.

Every team deals with it, Berhalter messed up when he threw him under the bus after the fact, especially when he said stuff in the locker room stays in the locker room. Don't blame Reyna for his parents foolishness, and he's not average lol that's craziness injury notwithstanding he's been good for Dortmund, he scored 3 goals In a row off the bench, probably the same amount of goals as the starters of this past world cup... and they came to his defense the minute stuff got out. You will chalk it up to Dortmund protecting their interest but I don't think so. So agree to disagree

      Clearly Reynas had a history of complaining and were at fault for doing so. However, Berhalter sticking with a striker postiion that never worked in qualifying and in the WC was a bad decision along with his decision to share the story about a player that almost got sent home.       @@gregm8838 yeah there are mistakes from all people involved but from all accounts gio's actions were yest bad, but not as egregious as his parents or gregs reaction. he then fixed his attitude. he is only like 20 years old after all, its on the adults to act like it and neither his parents or greg did that. you cant blackball the kid because of his parents, and you cant rehire greg based of many factors. honestly the team underperformed for the talent we have, as well as how he threw gio under the bus with his comments at the conference.
