We have had such fortune as fans to even be having this discussion. But for me, Pavel Datsyuk was an artist on an entirely different level. He was poetry in motion. And then pair that astounding skill with his humble personage and selflessness. He is a once in a lifetime talent and I loved every moment watching him play.

As someone who watched both eras, Pavel. One of the top 5 most skilled guys in NHL history imo.

I was always struck at Pavel's pure ability to take the puck away from guys at will, then he would go on the offensive, deke the skates off of whom ever he pleased and then make the goalie feel some kind of way about his own abilities to stop a puck. You can't say one was better than the other but you can say holy shit these two were apex hockey players in two different styles. Sergei would coast to coast the shit out of a puck, with such speed, great handles and great protection, to the point of breaking all containment that a team could put on a guy and then make the goalie feel some kind of way about his own skills. I feel very happy i could watch the full careers of each guy with the wings.

I think the key to this question is how it's phrased. If it was "who was the better hockey player," then it's a tough call and you can go into what made each of them great. The question was "who amazed you more" which to me would be Pavel, without a second thought. Dude was the Magic Man because he left you in awe at what was possible.

Great question and great debate topic. DMac hit it on the nose, two best physically gifted hockey players we have ever seen. Only thing I wish is that Fedorov wasn’t such an enigma. If Sergei would have given it 💯 throughout his career he’d be in the topic of top 5 players all-time. We saw what he could do when he turned it on. ‘98 playoffs when he had a $25 million bonus at stake he was unstoppable. ‘94 when he was the man while Yzerman was out he was MVP. The list is endless. Both were good on defense but edge to Pavel. Stickhandling goes to Pavel but you didn’t see anyone handle the puck like Pavel before he was in the league. Edge in shot to Fedorov, but to be fair that really wasn’t Datsyuk’s game. Both players were amazing to watch and we were lucky as DRW fans to see them

I think it boils down to differences physically between the two, kind of like what McCarty alluded to. I think Federov was more physically gifted, could rely more on his physical gifts, whereas Pav was more creative and gifted mentally, had to always be thinking. I've heard Pav described as a genius by many people, including interviews with other NHL players, because his intelligence and creative were off the charts, but I've never heard anybody describe Fedorov as a genius (that was Larionov), for Fedorov's physical gifts were so great that he could do anything.
How I would describe it is-Fedorov's star burned brighter, but Pav's star burned longer. If I had to pick one to win a game, I'd choose Fedorov. When Fedorov was on, he was on like no one else. But there will always be his lack of consistency, whereas Pav was always consistent. I can't recall a game where I thought that Pav didn't show up. So if I had to pick one for an entire season's worth of play, I'd choose Pav.
