I remember Larry Murphy telling how many people he stumps with the trivia question of "When I joined the Red Wings, who was my first defense partner?". The answer is Sergei Federov.
That's a good trivia question. I'll bet 99 percent of people say lidstrom
I remember when Federov arrived in Detroit and it was truly NEXT LEVEL playing. There was absolutely nobody with that speed and agility at the time. Stick handling off the charts. I remember there was a lot of uncertainty among fans because everyone was like “what?? A Soviet player on the wings??”…but like in true Detroit fashion, when we saw his heart was really in it and worked his butt off, he won us all over and he was one of us forever. That number #91 deserves to be retired, absolutely no doubts about it.
And let’s not forget, Probert is still one of the greatest Wings ever. Rest easy, Mr. probert!
Datsyuk (Along with Kane) is likely the most creative and best stick handler to play the game of all time. The highlights will be played for the rest of the history of hockey. Datsyuk is deserving of having his number up there no doubt in my mind.
^ this
100%
Saying datsyuk is no fedorov is absolutely ridiculous
I like pav more. Me and my brother argue all the time. They were both insane. But pav made a goalie get out of the entire net in a shootout. Who does that. ?
Agree
Fedorov playing today would be unmatched with anyone
StevieY and Sergei are the only players in NHL history who have scored 50+ goals AND won a Selke trophy. Should be a slam dunk.
Federov is probably the most dominant player I've ever seen play. He was like the Terminator in skates. He was the Lebron of his time. It's really a damn shame he ruined his legacy going to Anaheim. If he retired a Wing he would be walking on water in Michigan for the rest of his life.
BTW: Imagine how beastly of a franchise you have when guys like Dats and Zetter are not even in the top 5 of all time Red Wings!
Just how he defected from Russia to play for us is insane. Then bringing other Russians.
Fedorov should’ve been in the rafters over a decade ago. As much as I loved Datsyuk, Fedorov gets raised first before Datsyuk. Those 3 cups he won with us, he was a major part of that.
When you get named to the Top 100 NHL's greatest players you automatically get your jersey in the rafters if you spent a good decade or so with a franchise.
Still to this day, the only player to win the Hart and Selke in the same season
Fedorov has the distinction of scoring the first ever playoff goal to be reviewed by video replay (1991, Game 6 vs. the North Stars in OT).
I think a lot of people, some likely in the organization as well, were upset at Fedorov for holding out during the '97-'98 season. But he wanted to be the No.1 guy and that wasn't going to happen with Stevie around. I don't remember it being a big surprise when he signed with Anaheim in '03. Was never about money.
it was all about money ignorant fool.
Federov and Datsyuk both deserve it
It’s a disgrace that this proud organization has not retired this man’s number. He absolutely deserves the recognition.
Numbers that need to be retired
#96 Holmstrom
#33 Kris Draper
#40 Zetterburg
#13 Datsyuk
And IMO #14 Shanny. If it wasn't for the Shanny trade, we don't win 3 Stanley Cups.
#33 and #96 wont get retired ever imo arent the players you retire their numbers they were great players but not retiring their numbers good
This "Pavel Datsyuk ain't Sergei Fedorov" take does not sit well with me. They're both so great, but Pavel was another level. He may not have had the physical gifts of Sergei, but he was an artist. I've never seen someone make back-checking look fun. He brought it every game also, were sometimes Sergei would kind of go missing.
Datsyuk, Fedorov, Zetterberg all need their jerseys retired. Should of happened along time ago too. I'm not happy at all with Chris Illitich and how he is handling the Tigers organization right now. The least he could do is listen to the fans and retire these 3 Redwings jerseys. Seriously the fans want it so there should be no discussion period
#16 should be raised also!!
How Feds isn’t retired is just ridiculous.
Top 5 wings
Gordie Howe
Steve yzerman
Serge fedorov
Nick Lidstrom
Ted Lindsay
Agree. Sawchuk I'd put at 6 probably.
Lidstrom is probably number one, but he wasn’t the most exciting or extravagant, just perfect. Yzerman was and always will be my favorite, but Lidstrom made it look easier than anyone.
For me an important reason to retire a players jersey number is the connection I had with the player. I was always a huge Fedorov fan but each new contract negotiation created more tension. The breaking point was when he signed the Carolina deal specifically structured to limit Detroit’s ability to match. It’s understood professional athletes need to treat negotiations like a business. But when you’re trying to leave a city and its fans the athlete MUST understand they’re also breaking relationships with fans. In my mind, any player that decided against the city or team for whatever reason other than business reasons retiring their jersey become questionable. Fedorov had numerous times when he wanted out. Players should always remember how they want to be revered by local fans. That is a huge part of the business. If you keep sending fans a message you’d like to be somewhere else the business world replies in an ice cold fashion.
Fedorov, Datsyuk and Zetterberg should all have their numbers retired in my opinion.
Facts! And wouldn't it be great if they did 13 and 40 together?
It is really sad that fans and federov have been waiting for the wings to retire his number. He’s earn it.
1. Howe, 2. Lidstrom, 3. Yzerman, 4. Federov, 5. Daysyk?
My childhood idol Sergei Fedorov
I will fly from Vancouver to Detroit the day they retire Fedorov 91
Get it done Detroit
It’s about Damn Time
I understand why they didn't retire his number right away. You don't want the fiasco of fans booing the player you are trying to honor, like Chicago Blackhawk fans did to Chelios that time after he was retired. After Sergei left, any time he returned to Joe Louis as a member of the opposing team, the fans gave him a really hard time.
But that is over now. When he was actively trying to score goals against us, that really brought to mind the rough way that he left. But now that he is retired, the entirety of his career matters, and what he did against us in those few games is not worth mentioning when compared to everything he did for us before then.
Fans gave him a very warm reception when he was introduced at Comerica Park for an alumni game, and when he returned later during his Hall of Fame weekend. So to the extent that us fans have a heckler's veto, I think that we have made it clear that we have no intention to use it. And that is the only reason why I would have previously argued against retiring his number.
He is my idol growing up. Retire his number! I would drive from anywhere to watch his number raised! DESERVING!
It’s egregious that Larry Aurie’s number 6 isn’t up there too.
"D Mac" backed this up before. Like Dmac has any creedence...lol
Needs to be done he is one of the best ever
he is without any doubt one of the best players to ever play the game end.....91 Ruled!
Fedorov is absolutely a top tier elite legend. He absolutely deserves to have his number retired. All the things he accomplished in the winged wheel. Enough time has passed and it is time. However Datsyuk absolutely does as well. Him leaving for home is a different animal than anything that happened with Fedorov. And having only ever worn the winged wheel in the nhl only amplified Pav's legacy. This reminds me of, albeit a worse situation in my comparison that Sergei but, Jagr in Pittsburgh. There is really no reason his number isn't retired there yet everything considered and what he accomplished for them.
There should never ever be another #91 or #13 in Detroit. Period
Datsyuk and Zetterberg too
I say no on Fedorov. Based on his contract holdout. Yzermen and Lidstrom put the team first, where Fedorov did not.
This is the channel I come to so I can feel I’m the 5th grade again watching the wings in the 90s.
I agree with Keith Gave. If they won't retire Fedorov's number and they won't retire Vladdie's number, then put up a banner honoring the Russian Five. One banner, all five names. They changed the face of the NHL. It was like watching the Harlem Globetrotters on ice.
Ted Lindsay got shipped outta town because of taking a bullet for player’s rights back in the day of management basically owning you for life- amends were made for that. It’s beyond time to put Sergei’s number in the rafters. He’s a HOF’er for God sake. He has earned the honor. He was frickin’ revolutionary with his style of play.
Me and my brother argue about Pav verse Fedorov . They were both insane and changed the game , but pav made a goalie leave the entire net in a shootout. Who does that?
People forget Fedorov played on defense as well and not just the point on the pp. But the knock is he left the team and held out prior for trucks full of money. The year #91 held out is still the most money any player will ever make in NHL history, he made 28 million for 4 months of hockey, 47 games in 97/98, Thats about 51 million in today's valued dollar. The negotiation was Bitter and he was willing to play for the hurricanes, They illitches had to match Carolinas offer. So in the end the owners decide and I don't see it happening while Marion is alive.
Just to add I believe #91 should absolutely be in the rafters. He got a huge payday but it cost the owner big money up front
Federov was a beast on the blue line. As great a defenseman as he was at wing or center.
Numbers that need to be retired.
#96 Holmstrom
#33 Draper
#91 Fedorov
#14 Shanny
#25 D-Mac
#13Datysuk
#40 Zetterburg
#55Kronwall
#30 Chris Osgood
Call it what it is. Ownership has dropped the ball. Sergei most certainly deserves for his jersey to be retired. There is no rational alternative. It's purely personal.
It’s been time for that
It pissed me off when Mr. I didn't resign fedorov.
91 was the boss.
Fedorov had the luxury of playing with 4 other russian players who were all amazing individually but when they were on the ice together other teams didnt even know what to do.
I do say id take pav in any do or die game over Fedorov.
I hope you were high when you made this post.
Retire 91, 30, 16, 40, and 13
Ozzie Definitely deserves to be in the HoF.
@@The_Frozen_1 I think the goal from half ice against Dallas is holding him back. lol
J/k, that goal still makes me chuckle.
@@soscattered6126 could have sworn he scored against the Whalers back in 96' got robbed on the Venzna that year.
@@The_Frozen_1 not surprised that he isn’t since the league hates us
To many numbers. Sets the bar lower.
I think Fedorov is a sensitive dude and there were times he felt disrespected in Detroit. He's the kind of person who requires a certain type of treatment. I think that's why he ultimately left. He's the kind of person who needs to be built up instead of bullied or made an example of. He was also dealing with personal issues during the time -- married to Anna Kournikova and getting cheated on. I think these emotional and social dynamics were ultimately why he was a bit up and down during his time at the Red Wings. But in the playoffs, he was insanely clutch. There were series that the Wings wouldn't have won without him. He turned the tide in the 1997 series against the Avalanche. #4 in Red Wings history for goals. 2nd in Red Wings history in +/-
There was something else going on behind the scenes that motivated him to leave. I think it was something personal between him and the Red Wings coaching and administration. Just because he has never come out in the media and blamed them for him leaving doesn't mean it isn't true or couldn't be the case. He's just the kind of person to not trash an organization he was with for so long. I think Fedorov is ultimately not just an outstanding player, but a phenomenal person. He gave a $1 million home in Florida to Anna Kournikova for $100. He's not a hockey player -- he's an artist who happened to play hockey.
It is a business but you're missing the point of the Illitch family treating retired players like family with jobs, praise etc. If you give your career life to the Red Wings org they will take care of you for life, long after the huge checks.
Datsyuk is what Zergas hopes to be
But you guys are right. Fed needs his number retired
Hes the greatest all around player we have ever seen. The only player to win the hart and selke in the same season. His skating ability and edges created the nhl you see today. Everyone skates like him. Only player to win the hardest shot and fastest skater at the allstar game. He could score at will or shut down your teams best player. Led the nhl playoffs in Scoring playing more than half the games on defense lmfao. Nobody was more pivotal and decisive in leading the wings. And to make matters worse he was the best face off man in the game. Ppl look at the obvious. +238 for his career and a point per game in the playoffs while being a +38 . Fedorov is a legend. Set te standard for the modern day nhl. Bottom line scotty bowman said there are only a sprinkling of players in history who could get near him and he did whatever scotty asked him to do, score or shut you down
I want to like this video but it has 91 likes right now and I can't bring myself to hit the button.
Sergej was the best!!!! My favorite forever!!!!
What about Vladimir Konstantinov’s #16 has not been retired?! No one wares it and it’s been 25 years now. Plus it will be a great tribute to him and his family!
How can you sit there and say Fedorovs shot wasn't hard ?? He won the freakin NHLs hardest shot ... Fedorovs shot was precise but hard and heavy when he wanted hard...
Agree totally, he is one of the greatest red wings of all time, his number 91 needs to be up there with the other greats , his 91 should have been put up there in Joe Louis
SERGI was the Red Wings FERRARI 🐎 !!!!!!!!
Put His Number UP TOP !!!!!!!!!!!
✨🏒💫
Top 5 Red Wings Howe Sawchuk Lindsey Yzerman Lidstrom, are absolutely the greatest and did more for the wings than anyone, now you can do a different top 5 of eras like Howe Sawchuk Lindsey DelVecchio Kelly,. Then Yzerman Fedorov Chelios Shanahan Larionov, then Pav Hank Kronwall Holmstrom Franzen, homer there was nobody better jet front, Franzen had Babcock listened and let him get healthy probably would've been the 30 or 40 goal scorer each season, Best Grinder top 5 DMac Draper kocur Maltby Probert
Loved this
Fedorov was a better Defenseman than Paul Coffey yeah I said it, He was a complete player, face offs, pk pp Defense and point per game player
It’s easy to romanticize the past with Fedorov, but he put his team in a bad spot sitting out in 97-98 for more money and nearly leaving for Carolina. It worked out that year, but then he left chasing a payday and to be #1. He didn’t like being behind Yzerman. I still remember all of us at Joe booing him for years when he came back with the 3 different teams he played on for 5 seasons.
He was treated like gold in Detroit, but that wasn’t enough. 3 cups and wasn’t enough. He was one of the best 2 way players of all time and fans are grateful for what he gave us, but he also got too full of himself and craved the spotlight. Wings moved mountains to bring him to the US, he should’ve stayed loyal. Probably would’ve gotten another cup too, instead of wasting his last 5 years in the league.
Can't rank generational players in one single bucket.
Respectfully disagree.
#91, #40, #13 should all be locks to be retired!
Agreed
Don't want to be like Toronto. Run out of numbers to wear
Retire 91 !!!!! Way overdue
#Retire91and13and40
I would be okay with Darsyuk and Fedorov both having their numbers retired. Maybe #25 too...
#91, #13, #40 should all be locks to be retired!
Fedorov shouldn't of said fuck you to the Wings org ...... he was my favorite player growing up but you just don't do that
McCarteys input helps no one.
Fedorov Gretzky mcdavid
Jagr Trottier Ovechkin
Lemieux Mikita LaFleur
Bossy Dionne Messier
Orr Murphy
Lidstrom Macinnis
Coffey Hedman
I don't think there is any question that Sergei was good enough to have his number hanging from the rafters. And yes, you could say the same about Pavel. Both were phenomenal players but in different ways. The knock against retiring their numbers would be similar, IMO. Neither were viewed as leaders and both departed to play elsewhere. For many franchises, both would be no-brainers. But for a storied franchise filled with great players it is not such an easy decision. What a great problem to have.
But this franchise already retired players that left before. Let’s all be honest , they r not honoured as others because they r Russians
Retiring numbers is boomerish ghey. Just honor them. Only great players can wear them. Too many numbers retired already
This will never happen. Federov leaving the Red Wings pissed off the Illitches.
13>91
Dmac: 91 needs to be retired!
Yzerman: no
Dmac: * removes lips from Yzerman butt * BELIEVE IN THE YZER PLAN!!!! ITS NOT TIME FOR 91 TO BE RETIRED
Lol only joking
It isn't Yzerman's call. Number retirement decisions are made by the owner.
@@jeremykraenzlein5975 it was a joke....
simple answer. no.
In my life, only 19 and 5 should be retired... No other player deserves that title for the Wings.
Lol news flash
Wings don’t win any of the 3 rings without Fedorov
Gordie Howe said Fedorov was the greatest redwing and most talented player he ever seen play
Wayne Gretzky favourite hockey player
Fedorov was at the same level as those two, he just committed the sin of leaving. If that’s the reason, state it clearly.
B.S. period. Let the Ducks retire his number. Sergei wanted to be a Duck. So be it. You win Sergei.
He did not wanna be a duck
They offered him 5 years 50
Mill and he had issues with his agent stealing from him .. so revisited it in the off season and Detroit low balled him twice and gave his money derian Hatcher .. how did that work
Offered feds 4 year 40 mill
Then dropped it to 4 years 32 mill
Get your facts straight
You are ridiculous lol
He will be remembered as a Wing. Maybe not by some bitter Wings fans, but by hockey fans in general.
Nick Lidstrom said if he played a full season on defense he would've won a Norris
F I V E ( 5 ) GOALS 🥅 in One Game !!!!!!!!
✨🏒💫
Added my comments PRIOR to listening to the video …….. don’t want to sound “lazy ! “
✨🏒💫
When you hurt the owner deeply, it doesn't matter how good Sergei was to get his shirt retired. It should also be added, It is the fault of two parties when they have an greater difference of opinion. Sergei did nothing wrong (my book) when he sought a better deal, the owner today (the son) is making a huge mistake today not choosing a higher road choice today.
BC, Most fans agree with the importance that Sergei had on the team, it's time to heal the wounds that have been by acting like a grown up man and closing the circle, for the good of all.
I personally think it's hard to choose between Sergei and Patrice Bergeron as the best two-way player I've seen in hockey. My vote as a RW fans, it goes to Patrice…
Thumbs up
91 is worn today by many nhlers because of fedorov. Junior illitch needs to honor his fathers wishes though...fedorov fucked up by not finishing his career with Detroit. But Detroit as a city was a shitty place to live in at the time. Didn't fit fedorovs lifestyle anymore. Illitch and wings are known for signing players at a smaller price to put together a winning team. Red wings brought him over gave him a corvette and made his lifestyle unstoppable. Illitch gave the young fedorov confidence living and playing in America. Fedorov just wanted to leave for a change of scenery and needs to apologize for not sticking it out in Detroit until retirement. Neal and Darren did not address this in the video above.
