The new GH5s firmware 2.0 that released 4 days before this comment improves the auto-focus a great deal, plus enables RAW recording over HDMI to the Atomos Ninja V. A couple of things to consider that weren't in place when this video was made. Also, if you own a GH5, of course the GH5s won't be worth the trade-in for the vast majority of people, but I have a GH5s in my hands and it is definitely the best stills-style video camera you can purchase today. Used ones pop up on KEH for $1300-$1500 and that's where I got mine. The lack of IBIS is a positive for a lot of people, especially those using gimbals or other stabilized platforms, and the near-absent "jello" rolling shutter nonsense more than makes up for anything else it lacks. It makes Sony cameras look extremely terrible by comparison.
It's not an upgrade, it's a camera meant for different purposes. 99% of my videos are shot on a tripod, quality fluid head and IS turned off.
and here I am still using my beloved Panasonic GH2
It’s not an upgrade it’s an alternative.
Yup.
Kai, love your work, but I can see there was plenty of highlight detail which none of it seemed blown out. You just didn't convert to rec709 properly while preserving the highlights.
This camera is targeted toward more professional film makers that use other stabilization techniques like gimbals. So they disabled the in body stabilization bc if they still had it, sometimes it can mess with the footage bc the sensor isn't fully locked down (even when stabilization is turned off). So it's better if your camera doesn't have in body stabilization at all if you're using something like a gimbal (apparently anyway).
Kai, the menu is greyed out because you don’t have a stabilized lens attached. Once you do, you’re able to control the stabilization mode with that menu option (for tripod shooting).
Scott Mellish i am pretty sure he is aware if that, he specifically says he is talking about the in body is...
Scott, yep if thinking exactly the same thing.
I disagree WouterBMX..Scott is right to point that out to Kai. He actually thought that Panasonic removed the IBIS but left the menu item in the firmware as sort of a cruel joke. But why would a company do that? So Scott is correct in that it's there for when there is a lens attached with IS then it wont be greyed out.
I’m ok with the GH5 AF may be just because my a7S II is worse 😅

The GH5's AF is better now right, Lok?
Low light though! Compatible with my Sony a7S II it seems! Can’t wait to test it myself! In body stabilization never as good as lens stabilization anyway!
I don't think I understand the logic behind the complaint about losing the highlights when applying a REC 709 LUT. The highlight detail was clearly there originally. Sometimes you can't just slap a LUT on without adjusting the curves to preserve the highlights. That has nothing to do with a camera's dynamic range, as I've played with RED footage that had a full 15 stops, and even then, if the highlights were already close, a LUT could push them over the edge.
Obviously he doesn’t know how to proper grade V-Log.
I've gotta agree that from Kai's pov (& mine too come to that) the S doesn't tick all the boxes in the way that the 5 does, but this does show Panasonic's managerial bravery.
These boys have released a camera that they KNOW will be criticised for its lack of ibis, mft chip and price, but only really by those it's not aimed at. Those that feel the arrow pierce their heart will thank Panasonic for their bravery and admire them for their acceptance of the hostility that will inevitably be generated.
About the IBIS: Panasonic said that the GH5 sensor is held in place by magnets when IBIS is not in use. These magnets were sometimes overcome when used in excessively vibrating environments, or would not work properly when used with some gimbals or other external stabilization systems. As the GH5s is intended for serious video production, the decision was made to remove/disable IBIS entirely.
Right, but then in those "excessively vibrating environments" any so-called "pro" supposedly consulted by Panasonic would (if competent) stabilize their GH5S to reduce the "excessively vibrating environment." Unless you're living in Brooklyn and/or angling for a Vimeo Staff Pick, nobody wants micro-jitters let alone "excessively vibrating" footage. This is Panasonic's financial accounting department coming with up an answer and looking for the question, plain and simple.
raksh9 you speak the truth on this point.
After three days of obsessively comparing the GH5 and GH5s, this is by far the most useful, helpful and entertaining video I've seen. THANK-YOU.
Always quality Kai 👌🏽. Digital Rev is sad without you lol
Talk about the Panasonic G9.
Hi Kai, which lens do you used when making the hasselblad's video? was it the 12mm f/1.4? love the bokeh
Great video! Very honest and useful in deciding whether the GH5s is worth it
No IBIS is a dealbreaker
rmeddy1 Panasonic removed the ibis for good reasons. The camera is marketed towards high end video production, and they’re are many situations where you really don’t want ibis on a video camera. Ibis is not something you can switch completely off on a camera. You can turn it ‘off’ where the magnet will try to hold the sensor in place, but the sensor will still be susceptible to movement with heavy shake.
That being said the ibis on the gh5 is very good, and comes in use in some run and fun situations. The gh5s is clearly for specialised high end video use, and to be used alongside the gh5.
Both the GH5 and GH5s have very high end performance, I have two GH5 and the results are unreal. I love Kai W, but he has definitely understated how important the extra two stop of dynamic range is. Paired together with V-log gamma curve (included in GH5s, additional purchase on GH5) this camera has no issue with highlights as stated in the video if used correctly, and can compete with high end cinema cameras. 14 stops of dynamic range is where cinema camera like the Arri Alexa are at.
Dual native iso sensor is also a powerful upgrade. Ive tested this feature on the Panasonic EVA 1, and again Kai has understated what an important feature this is on the GH5s.
4k 60 fps. Enough said. And 240 fps in full HD.
GH5s also has timecode in, something that is missing from all mirrorless cameras.
Both the cameras record with the incredible 400mbps 422 ALL-I codec which is incredible. Bunched together with the ability to shoot 2.0 anamorphic lenses, there is no other camera in this price range that compete.
I am a professional camera man and have used Arri Alexa's, Amiras, Sony F55's, and have extensive experience editing with all variations of these high end formats. I understand what you mean by high end camera's. What I'm saying is the GH5 is a mirrorless camera with high end features and high end results. I can guarantee that the majority of GH5 sales have been to professional cameramen integrating it into there workflow.
Will the GH5 take over Hollywood? No, but it will give arri a serious kick up the arse. I've been on set on some high budget films, and its not unheard for filmmakers to use 5Ds or mirrorless cameras to achieve to shots that would be difficult with larger cameras. You'd be surprised how seriously these little cameras are taken by industry professionals.
My experience with the GH5 has shown me that there isn't anything you can't do with with these little camera bodies that an Arri can. That being said we've implemented them with other high end gear such as steadicams, remote focus systems and professional monitors to get great results. But when it comes down to the comparing the video files, the GH5 files are just as versatile and and lovely to look at as high end cinema camera files.
I can tell you from my experience that everyone Ive met who uses the GH5, are high end professionals, using the GH5 in their trade. Some TV shows and adverts are shot entirely with mirrorless cameras, as i said before. Implemented into feature films. This isn't me making assumptions, I've met people who are doing this!
Money isn't the only factor when it comes to hi end gear. That being said, i still use other 'higher end' cameras on certain jobs, but its usually down to other workflow specifics and not whether the cameras quality is good enough.
Most of the changes on the GH5 are made with the professional in mind. Make no mistake these cameras are making a big splash atm.
Also check out some of these comparisons. These demonstrate the high end results of these cameras:

moo so true man
What? You can see some detail in the log file that was lost in the grade. Don’t blame the DR of the cameras for that Kai - that’s your fault for the way you graded it
Yeah man, I hit all the same points. I feel like they're just crapping out a camera month these days... spend money on lenses I say!
Yes! Lenses! And adapters! And Focal reducers! And more lenses! + OFC awesome lights + reflectors and NEVER EVER forget how important sound is!
Has anyone done a comparison between a GH5s with 12-35 panasonic lens VS GH5 + XL speedbooster + 18-35 sigma lens?
I'm dying to see that and I can't find it anywhere!!!!
isn't the other way around more relevant, i.e. GH5s with 12-35 panasonic lens VS GH5 + XL speedbooster + 18-35 sigma lens?
you're absolutely right! sorry man
Nice video, I always enjoy your work.
Looking at the general comments below, I'm moved to point out that when I entered the pro photographer arena over forty years ago, togs would buy a camera - or preferably two for safety/ease of use - then hammer the crap out of it/them for four or five years before considering replacements. Although now partially retired, and a confirmed M43 user - back knackered from carrying heavy gear around for too long - I still not only have my original Nikon lenses in my kit, but actually use them fairly often, particularly my old micro Nikkor. Kai practices what he preaches, and invests the real money in decent glass. If you have dosh that's burning a hole in your pocket, buy some better glass, don't keep 'upgrading' to this week's latest camera - IT WON'T MAKE YOU A BETTER PHOTOGRAPHER!
Love how candid you are in this video. Thanks for your thoughts Kai. Probably worth more than a penny since you saved me from listing my GH5 and purchasing this...or an A7iii or an X-H1.
I think you're being a little too hard on the low light performance. I think it's really good and that they did a fantastic job on that. People say it's even better than the a7s II at certain ISO's. So imagine how good it will get if you pair it up with a SpeedBooster!
And maybe you need to improve your grading skills, if you're blowing up those highlights.
But I agree, they totally dropped the ball when they removed the IBIS. I was actually going to buy it until I heard no IBIS. My jaw dropped to the floor, because of how baffling of a move that was from Panasonic.
And no phase detect AF and no DR improvement is a big deal also. But I could get by. It's just the lack of IBIS that killed any hopes for me on getting it.
Shame.
Wow I haven’t watched Kai for half a year, his hair got long :D I like it
Kai is mutch cooler than Peter McKinnon :)
mk-tour They make videos on quite different genres lol...
I like both of them, but they have such different styles, i don’t think you can compare them
Kai is a really bitter guy, he won't improve with age, a haggered old reporter in a young body. Peter is a fun loving soul and inspiring.
Prince Westerburg but he keeps trying to push his coffee brand on us. Like no thanks dude, just show me video stuff.
Peter can be more popular as he do generic videos about generic stuff that cost his audience less time to do and less brain power to think. It's kinda like fast food and in this age fast food-like content is a lot more popular.
I just found your video blog and you are hilarious. You know what you are talking about and you make me laugh. The manner in which you discuss cameras is realistic without sounding like a total camera snob. Great video.
hi Kai, really appreciate ur opinion on this. ive been using GH5 everywhere in europe and it has been nothing but perfect for videography. keep up the good work :)
You have poor understanding of how Dual Native ISO works. Use the 2nd circuit, the ISO2500 has the same noise level as for ISO400. It's 2.5stop improvement in the SNI department.
GH5 800 = GH5s @ 2500 ISO I would say that’s a big improvement. It’s a great second camera if you can afford it.
2 years late but didn't Panasonic initially stress that it wasn't an upgrade? Like they said this a version of the gh5 we think indie filmmakers will like? Which would mean vloggers would not like this camera?
No IBIS, No 10bt 60fps, No good autofocus, No GH5s
Who needs IBIS. Real professional videographers prefer to have a locked down mirror but this cannot be done on the GH5 because even when one turns off the IBIS the mirror is still moving
what so real about ''Real professional videographers''? If that is the case Real professional videographers dont use mirrorless still bodies to shoot Real professional videography
The GH5 is a very high quality pro camera with a major fault in the auto focus department. What I should have said in my last comment is "many professional videographers don't want IBIS & prefer a locked down mirror". It all depends on what you want your camera for and how comfortable you feel with it in use. It's all down to personal opinion so ignore my last comment. I wasn't thinking correctly when I wrote it.
Back to back videos from Kai! New year indeed!
Everyone is missing the point with the lack of ibis on the gh5s. This is something a lot of video professionals don’t want on this camera.
If I didn't have a GH5, I would be all in because I probably wouldn't know just how amazing the Dual Image stabilization is and would love to have the better low light performance.
Lately I'm just so frustrated, every single camera has SOME compromise, it's not even a matter of money. I would max out all of my credit cards just to have a camera that met every single one of my needs, and there literally isn't one that does everything on my checklist. Ah well, maybe eventually!
Yea I know what you mean. I went from Panasonic dual IS to APSC for low light gains, but went back to Panasonic with dual IS because it worked better for me. Maybe in two years, there will be a GH6s with IBIS - however, there are lenses with Panasonic that have OIS built in, and while it won't touch 5-axis IBIS I'm sure shooting handheld carefully for event shooters can be done. Though like some of the comments are saying its probably not targeted to events shooters- even though we love the DOF of MFT sensor, size of telephoto zooms compared to FF/APSC zooms, and most importantly ergonomics. Dual ISO is HUGE for a camera in the price range of the GH5s- Would love that with my 0.95 primes. Last few years always felt like you hand to compromise, the A7RIII seemed so close but its far off still.
All the cameras are so good though. Every new iteration or version is only marginally better than the one before it. You can only spot the differences in particular edge cases (low light, wide angle lens without IS, etc.). In the majority of shots you might take it would be hard to tell the difference between a GH4 and the new GH5S unless you were looking for it.
The low light sensor variant seems like it’s going to be a new thing going forward just as a way to squeeze out a marginally better picture for certain edge cases.
I think the A7S III will be the next big thing with little to no compromise. Low light king, IBIS, 240fps, amazing dynamic range, same auto focus as the A7R III (which is really good), same big battery as the A9/A7R III, incredible EVF + focus peaking. Hopefully they fixed the rolling shutter !! that said ... holy shit, Sony lens are expensive AF!!
Perfection still costs something, you know. It was always like that. If you get something, you lose something else, like getting a full-frame sensor for dope af DOF and Noise perf but bigger and more expensive lenses (also less variety, and some would love to try Sigma 18-35 mm f/1.8 Art on FF).
John Kironde exactly. Gotta have that screen :c
The GH5s is not an upgrade it is a different camera built for a very specific purpose. If you don’t need this level of low light performance, you are better off with the standard Gh5. If you are a wedding videographer, you might consider one of these; however, it would be a mistake to rely only on this as it has no ibis.
Current GH4 owner, trying to decide to get a GH5 or GH5s. _The_ main selling point for the GH5s for me is the low-light performance. The samples I've seen look great, but they're mostly night shots. I'd love to know how the GH5s performs in a normal room with regular, everyday lighting: on my Gh4, it's usually muddy and dim. I'd like to hear your opinions on that. But, if you think that using fast glass makes up for the difference, then maybe that clinches things in favor of the GH5.
Is it just me or was the two specks of dust on the sensor killing you? Lack of IBIS can be a benefit for folks that use tripods and gimbals or who mount there camera on top of there car -- IBIS actually makes the video shakier for on car applications.
Nothing like watching Kai while chomping a roast beef Sub Sandwich.
If you're a filmmaker, you should not be using autofocus or IBIS. These are things that dedicated tools are for. Exposure, dynamic range, the aspect ratio ect are all imperative tools for filmmakers. It seems most people who make these comparison videos do so from a photographers point of view and rarely seem to even understand half the features the GH5s has. Which only supports that the GH5 is a better stills cam, which it is. But as a filmmaker the GH5s is the way forward.
And Luke Neumann's channel he has done a ISO test up to 12800 at night and it still looks very clean to me. Weird, yours seems different.
05:57 👌👍😜
Can we please put the final nail in the AF coffin already. No need to beat a dead horse. If you need autofocus go with Canon or Sony. Goodnight
Exactly Jason
You’re awesome Max!
so Jason Chavez you're saying we should ignore the fact that Panasonic still hasn't improved their autofocus and just accept that it will forever suck?
And accept the price too.
As a GH5 owner, I'm happy I don't need to lose sleep wondering if I should squeeze my budget for the GH5s.
No IBIS... That's a huge huge perk to the GH5
10MP vs 20MP photos...
But its nice to see that the 240fps actually looks like 1080p vs the more usable 120fps in the GH5
I don't see many people choosing to pay more for the GH5s and getting 'less'.
But don't get me wrong, the GH5s is a nice addition the to Indy film industry!
I said a comment on another channel that no IBIS = no sale for me. Now I have many replies defending how not having IBIS is a great and more professional thing. I just don't get it. It's just like Canon fanbois absolutely don't want a higher video resolution than 1080p in their modern cameras and how it is just not needed and actually get hostile about the idea. It's a huge step backwards no matter what anyone says. If dead set on not using it, just turn it off. Yes I know it takes more power even with IBIS off but the tradeoff is well worth it for when you need it. If you don't want to shoot 4k, just set it to 1080p, right?
Or micro 4/3rds fanboys who don't want more megapixels. These are all just rationalization attempts.
This camera is meant for pros who anyway shoot on a stabilizer. Panasonic asked the targeted audience and the response was that IBIS is not needed.
IBIS also means more heat that is generated so worse low light performance. In return it has dual ISO.
thecamerastoretv has a ~50min video which explains further why panasonic didn't put IBIS in this camera.
Nebeldiener They sell stuff and you cant expect a really bad review from a shopkeeper.
Nebeldiener sigh. A gimbal is not the same as shooting handheld. Mind boggles who think they are one and the same
+Philip Bloom This exactly.
Can you please update your Yi M1 to the new 3.0 firmware? It's about all I can stretch to and I've heard the update fixed AF and throws in lots more goodies too. You also have a deadline: I travel to Sri Lanka in 10 days. :D ps hyped since I seen Lok's video to see you're a local boy. Clock House or Starbucks? It's on me! Haha
I'm here just to watch the channel grow.
Leaving off IBIS, rather than having an option to lock the sensor in place for gimbal/steadicam use, will surely cost them a lot of sales, including mine. Maybe they do see it as a camera only for serious productions (and Sony may be really screwing them over on the sensor cost, so the GH5 with its Panasonic sensor might be what they actually want to sell) but the sales volume reduction from that will at least give them something to add in the mk 2. I'm another person sticking with an older camera (GH4, also a sensor pixel per video pixel) and waiting to see how many of the A7sII issues get fixed in the III - plus it's NAB in April so maybe not that long a wait :-)
I'm quite happy with my GH5, but honestly the GH5s was intended for PROFESSIONALS who like a small form factor and ease of use. If you're so salty about specs and all of that stuff (valid criticisms for sure), just see what the camera can do when used as intended. Check out Ali Kubba and Osamu Hasegawa's channels and you'll see how the camera really was meant to be used (and by whom).
Thanks for this video I was on the fence but you helped me make my decision to go with the gh5.
Has anyone done a comparison between a GH5s with 12-35 panasonic lens VS GH5 + XL speedbooster + 18-35 sigma lens?
I'm dying to see that and I can't find it anywhere!!!!
Kai, what would you recommend to me as a semi-pro video shooter? Right now I have a G7 with 1 lens only, aiming for around 2000$ +/-. Should I stay with M43 and get GH5 or go to Sony and get a A6500 with lenses or A7SII? I need good AF, shooting 1080p with slow-mo, decent low light performance (mainly big halls or city streets well lit), decent IBIS/OIS (using a gimbal 50% time).
GH5s looks good, especially with improved low light performance, but lack of IBIS and few other stuff (+price) doesn't make it such a good buy as the standard GH5. GH5s is priced the same as A7SII which is a steep price tag for a camera which is constantly being called out for dire AF.
The new sensor is wider. Goes right to the edge of the m4/3 image circle. No room to move for stabilization without causing significant vignetting on some lenses.
Good points. Shame about the lack of stabilization :(
I specifically remember seeing the Hasselblad video and thinking that it looked amazing
when the videos out and someone posts "Nice work" immediately
What time do you call this? Thank god my owl was awake.
Jonathan Groggins I'll buy it for 10buck
nice preview. Does the GH5s have the same 1.4x crop 4k mode than the GH5?
Two videos in one day? Happy new year
Off topic but what kind of sweatshirt is that? Where could I purchase it? Love your videos too btw
I'll stick with my GH5. I love it especially the in body O.I.S. combined with O.I.S. lenses. I just did a short review after using it for 6 months. I use it for all sorts of projects mostly for my Mavic Pro documentaries on my channel.
Looks like i'll be sticking with Nikon for now. Good thing I do more Photos than Videos. Nikon still blows for videos, but I have invested in too much glass to change to Sony or Panasonic or anyone else for that matter at this point.
Also Kai, are you considering doing more smartphone camera reviews? I'd love to see your opinions on the current flagships (Pixel 2, iPhone X, Note 8, etc.) (Especially the Pixel 2 since it's rather highly praised.)
If you didn't really know, why GH5S came w/o IBIS, what were the sensor true specs forcing this trade-off, and rationale behind getting rid of IBIS (for instance why people filming Top Gear had to downgrade from GH5 to GH4 for some of their shoots), why did you produce this video? You can have different opinion, but you are supposed to know your onions.
No one seems to mention the GH5s having very little rolling shutter, and it seems a lot of IBIS camera owners don't realize that the fine detail softness or the jumpy pans are caused by the IBIS on a stable platform.
I love my GH5 for youtube vids. I can tell you first hand as a film pro, that pro productions will use something more like an FS7, or an Alexa mini before this camera. Adding TC options and removing IBIS on this GH5S is absurd, what we're they thinking?
This is gatekeeping camera snobbery. Pros use a lot of different gear and there are a lot of different types of pros. An FS7 costs three times the price of the GH5s body. What does the FS7 do that the GH5s doesn't do? Probably not enough for some people to justify the tripled price tag.
I'm waiting for your review about the Panasonic G9 Kai! Don’t let me down 👏🏻📷 😜
What are your thoughts on Lumix G9 Kai? Has IBIS and better AF than GH5? Would love your feedback on that!
I think your right, so I've decided to save my money stick with my superceded GH5, and buy the GH6 when it arrives. Probably only have to wait 6 months or so, what you, wise or not? Cheers, love yr reviews! 🤠👍🎥🎉
It *is* groundbreaking! The GH5S pushes lowlight beyond what any of us practically need.
Soooo many comments here. I did get the GH5s because I'm doing some outdoor filming this summer with sea turtles and will need to shoot in low light situations as they are nocturnal. Have not seen a ton of new lens suggestions for the GH5s vs. the GH5. I know the GH5s is for "professionals" that have cool stabilization units, but I'd like to have the option of doing some hand held stuff. Was wondering if anyone has used Canon IS lenses with the GH5s? I know the Sigma Art 18-35 is what everyone is getting for the GH5, but I'm guessing (hoping) a new slew of lenses that have IS might get recommended for the GH5s. I'm wanting to keep canon glass, as my other camera is a canon C100 markii and it would be great if the lens worked on both cameras. Don't know if anyone else out there has been coming to dead ends as well, but would love to see a demo comparing the Metabones T speed booster ultra .71 and Speed Booster XL .64 adaptors with a canon IS lens and with the sigma art 18-35 lens for the GH5s . Again this is pretty amazing that most of the time I find videos for all this stuff. It just might take a while to get more content specific for the GH5s.
You should come to Somerset to do some landscape photography some beautiful landscapes here
Did Sony make the sensor? Perhaps Tower Jazz made it given they are connected to Panasonic. Tower Jazz made the FF sensors in Leica and Nikon D850.
it is big as a dslr but has this tiny sensor. is this for video? or why would somebody buy this over a nice dslr, i dont get it
Couldn’t agree more with you. As a GH5 owner and GH4, and A6500 blah blah I gotta say from everything I’ve seen.... I’ll wait for the A7SIII.... and then the GH6 😏
Oh well, I will just have to get the Hasselblad then :-) Apparently, the reason for the removal of IBIS is heat dispersion. Anyway, I feel I now got a bargain by getting the G80/85; it was only £649 body only and I have some of that fast glass too Kai-woo hoo!
The GH5s is not an upgrade or a replacement for the GH5. It's a slightly different camera for different situations.
KAI are you able to do a review on the LUMIX G9 in the near future mate. All the best in 2018, Greetings from OZ, gee thats disapointing to leave out the IBIS - Crazy Panasonic Crew must have been pissed when making the decision.
As an GH5 owner i am actually happy that the GH5S is not that much if any of an improvement over the original GH5
I am currently an olympus em1 mkii user and have invested in a lot of its top lenses. I wonder whether it is worth buying the gh5 as prices fall and will work well with those olympus lenses. Especially as I like to take video clips and even considering doing a short film.
Kai, what is that hood you've got on 25? Is that just a step up ring?
I'm so done with that OEM crap.
LOL gotta love yr truthfulness of a GH5 owner!!!
The best part of the GH5 was the image stabilization...
And how many stops did we lose when they did not redesign their IBIS? If I wan't better low light performance, I'll whip out a DSLR.
I am not sure how to interpret this video. Especially when every other review from cinematographers show the opposite perspective. Even a review of the GH5s vs a $36k Alexa Mini shows the low light capability and that the GH5s is an amazing camera. So not sure if Kai's perspective is because he is a gear guy and not a cinematographer or something else. But, it does cause me to question the validity these reviews.
You, sir, are absolutely on target here. It'll take time for the excitement to die down before people realize the compromises you need to make to shoot well with the GH5s. It's a niche product. Most people using the GH5 should continue using the GH5.
Agree on most points but as some tests released today show, the AF is improved greatly due to freed processing power. It focuses faster, locks for longer and tracks better. Still is no Sony or Canon but it is now usable. Too bad about the IBIS it really kills this camera.
"it is now usable" -- AFC is now usable in video? Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. Show me a reputable video that demonstrates it.
mountainhobo search for the GH5s AF test by Photo by Richard. Posted yesterday. It is dramatically better than firmware 2.2 on the GH5.
Yes, it appears to acquire focus more readily, but I would like to see more tests on tracking. Even in his video once he starts moving quickly away from the camera (in a straight line), AF fails. czcams.com/video/XLNQmaEdBUQ/video.htmlm7s BTW, I am not comparing to GH5, since as far as I am concerned, GH5 does not have AFC in video. I am comparing to more competent video AFC implementations, like Canon or Sony.
2am upload great, now I can't sleep
My take on the GH5s is that it really is for specialized shooting environments where Low light and portability is required however its low light performance is poor compared to the A7SII. Most of us shooting events, run and gun stuff will not choose this camera however due to the lack of IBIS and portability. Kai also didn't talk about the fact that they took away 6K photo mode, Anamorphic shooting (due to sensor) - sorry folks no open gate on this cam! alongside taking away IBIS system.
The reality is that Low light shooting can be enhanced with speedboosters and fast lenses. For everything else, light your scene better or choose the right tool for the right job. I'd much rather have better Image quality by downsampling a bigger sensor like on the GH5 then low light because i don't need low light all the time. I think the GH5 is good enough. If they want to improve low light, make the GH6 have an APS-C or FF sensor and EF mount like the EVA-1 and ditch MFT on the next camera entirely or separate the two models by different sensor size and keep IBIS on both.
The claim that IBIS when turned off causes vibrations in shooting while on a stabilizer i think is a Red herring. Sure its a floating sensor versus not and magnetics can fail however how many serious productions are 1. Going to use a GH5 alone where there is serious vibration 2. Have that much vibration that can't be compensated for in post or using IBIS? Even even the newest GoPros still have E-stabilization still and those don't have IBIS.
Perhaps Panasonic can let us know who specifically this new camera was designed for (i mean what expensive stakeholder actually requested these changes?).
I look forward to the GH6 and in the meantime will be shooting on my GH5 for quite a while!

Interesting but the times i'm going to mount my GH5 on a fast moving roll cage where vibration is a problem is very very limited.. Portability is the signature for the Mirrorless and MFT sensor size.. I'd use my GoPro before i attempted mounting a GH5... So again, this GH5s , the S should stand for specialized (even though they say it stands for sensitivity). The only great two features on the GH5s in my opinion are the Dual native ISO for better low light shooting and the increase of Slow motion for 1080p video at 240 fps (180 usable) however at a cost of higher resolution downscaling. If you need better low light performance (or plan on mounting it to a vibration source) choose the GH5s.
Panasonic didn't make that camera for a GH5 replacement. They made it for people that use that type of cameras as B cams, for cinematographers. These people can't use GoPro's. GoPros' aren't for cinema and features are not even close to what the GH5 can offer. You can't mount a RED or a Varicam on small vehicles for example. If you need IBIS for your wedding jobs, then you better use a camera with IBIS like A7SII or GH5. Well, it would be the best to have it all just in one camera, I know, but we'll wait to see what Sony has to offer with the A7SIII or Pana with the next GH6 when it comes out.
Yes I know its not a direct replacement. Lots of Gopro's are still used in features and Television. You can get good results with them. Personally though, there are a lot of other options for cinematographers for those bumpy rides that need footage. You could even strap a Sony A7SII, Panasonic G7 or G85 and still get great 4K footage. My point is that its fitting a very very small niche, versus other options available already (ie late to the game). I'm upset that it costs more than the GH5 when the stripped away features. Yes they added Dual Native ISO! that's a good bonus. You typically don't build a camera to fit one specific situation however otherwise you end up with a RED camera or one of those ultra Highspeed cameras that no one reviews or can afford. The GH5 was known for travel and portability with a filmmaker and documentary style shooting in mind and was marketed in some circles as a great B-Cam as well.... In my mind MFT and low light will always struggle against competitors in full frame due to the physics of it so there are better options out there that cost not much more. It's definitely good to have choice and options so congratulations on releasing another tool filmmakers can choose to use, just wish they would stop removing useful features and be more clear for whom the camera is specifically aimed at. Once Sony Releases the A7SIII this year (as anticipated) the low light battle will be won. Ultimately, use the right tool for the job is the bottom line, if that's the GH5s for you, then so be it! Cheers!

@kai W. Could you please link the song you have playing in the BG?
I do like it when your serious for a change . Most of the time . Love your vids dude
Smash or pass (GH5s Edition)?
go..
I quite recently bought a Fujifilm X-T10 before finding out about this camera and its amazing video capabilities. Any recommendations how to get the most out of the X-T10?
If Olympus ups their game in video and some minor adjustments, there is no question what to get. And if Pentax ups ups ups ups their game in video there would also be no question what to get.
I got the Lumix G7 and it's ok for me. G80 a little bit better couse of IBIS but if I will change my cam I will choose GH5.
Nearly 500k!!
What is the name of the song he was using in the beginning
2 uploads??
I know, what's wrong with me?!?!
Kai W off to a good start with the new year!
Can the focus fix videos can help the lumix g7 focus?
Panasonic's website says 4:2:2 10bit.. can you explain why you keep saying 4:2:0 8bit?
Tried to click the pause button on the wall; it works!
Excellent. Thank you.
