    About the *ISO performance* : everything depends on the scene. In low dynamic range situation, for example music performance with well lit subject and dark background, you can easily go above ISO 12 800. In HDR scenes, ISO 6 400 is as high as I would go, which is generally very good result.

      @Lee Stevens well if you dont mind gimbal, go for GH5S, or to some extend maybe fujifilm XT-3. Otherwise GH5 (without gimbal)!
      Sony A73 or Nikon Z6 are two other good alternatives but with some caveats for videographers, I can't recommend whole heatedly.

    Another great real world review. Once one gets over not having a zillion megapixels in their next camera, this masterpiece by Panasonic must be one of the best cameras ever made, especially with the Leica glass. For 99% of the viewing experience of normal human beings, in other words, 4k monitors or television at max, this camera is at the top end of what is technically possible at a reasonable price. You actually used this camera in a number of real world situations that are not specifically professional setups with a crew of people hanging around with specialized lighting etc. Thanks again for a great review.

    This is an excellent review and gets a sub from me.
    I have a G9 and GH5S and in some circumstances the GH5S actually makes a better stills camera than the G9. Its images are cleaner in modest light, and if you shoot in 16:9 or 3:2 aspect ratio then the multi-aspect ratio sensor means the gap in resolution is reduced quite a lot. The GH5S is an absolutely brilliant camera, but I still like the IBIS in the G9.
    Thanks for the hard work that went into this. I hope this channel grows and grows in popularity... you absolutely deserve it.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  Před 6 lety

      Thank you, I appreciate your subscription! If you export still image from the G9 at the same size as you would from GH5S you get a lot of noise compression, which in my experience makes up for smaller pixels, but it really depends on the situation.

  • @tonylouisvisionvideography3469

    The GH5s is awesome. I have owned it for just over 1 year now and love that multi aspect ratio sensor. It's low light performance is incredible.

  • @buby024
    @buby024 Před 6 lety +1

    Wow, another great review. You even covered a little bit of photography with this cam.
    I read a rumor that G90 may come soon and have Gh5s sensor inside. With IBIS...
    That should be interesting

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  Před 6 lety +2

      Thank you, I don't think that those rumors are correct, making G90 with 10.3 mpix sensor won't make much sense IMO.

    • @buby024
      @buby024 Před 6 lety

      The Hybrid Shooter certainly a 10.3 mpix is not great for photography, but I like the idea of cheaper camera better in low light.
      Maybe there will be higher count mpix sensor but with Gh5s technology to improve low light

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  Před 6 lety +2

      You need 10-bit to be able to take full advantage of that sensor and I don't think that Panasonic will make such camera in lower product line, combining IBIS and multi-aspect ratio is also technically difficult.

    @sagar0 Před 4 lety +1

    This video was in-depth and useful. Thank you.

  • @WhiteWulfe
    @WhiteWulfe Před 6 lety +2

    While it is more video oriented (even more so than the GH5 itself), I could see it being useful for stills such as available light night photography, where noise can be a rather annoying to deal with issue, as well as astrophotography since dark current noise is strikingly low on it - in fact, the only camera I've seen on Optyczne's reviews that beats it for such are Fuji's cameras (specifically the X-E3 and X-H1). Well, at least if one were to stick to the micro four thirds format anyways.
    But then again, those are both semi-specialzed/niche areas of photography. Sure would be neat to have a G9 and a GH5S in my camera bag though, as they seem like they'd cover a lot of ground in tandem.
    Lovely review of the GH5S!

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  Před 6 lety

      Thank you, that is indeed very specific case. If you shoot with high resolution sensor and export at same resolution as you would with GH5S, the noise will be compressed due to the down-scaling.

    • @stevenuseda6317
      @stevenuseda6317 Před 6 lety +1

      White Wulfe I have the gh5s and I do t recommend for photos at all. It’s an astounding video camera but for photos all around the board it’s pretty bad. You’d be better picking up a used canon 6d for astrophotography

    • @WhiteWulfe
      @WhiteWulfe Před 6 lety

      Huh. Had the usual micro four thirds weight and portability thoughts lined up and even had a draft written up, but before hitting reply felt I should double check a few things before I did such. Rather glad I did, since weight isn't all that much of an issue (580g vs 770g is just shy of half a pound, which when you look at even portable astrophotography setups isn't really all that much), and pricing of a 6D even brand new is, uhm, $1,250 CAD on sale (or $1,699 USD modded from KolariVision (LifePixel probably has a similar price) for better H-Alpha sensitivity). Or in other words, it's $50 more than a G85 with kit lens for an unmodified one, or $100 CAD cheaper than a G9 brand new if you get the modified 6D, assuming you use the non-sale price of the G9 (apparently it's on sale really cheap right now, intriguing)...
      Noise is significantly better on the 6D (ISO 1600 might as well be "dark current noise, what noise?" for three minute exposures, which is really REALLY good news because it means there shouldn't be all that much for 5 or even 10 minute subs), it works out of the gate with pretty much all imaging software out there because Canon's API being open to developers is rather well known, especially with how they'll work with companies to have it work even better (APT and BackyardEOS, didn't bother checking any others as those are the two main ones people seem to use), it has a fairly decent battery life, shutter has a good long life (150k cycles!), the three lenses I'd be wanting to pack alongside it are inexpensive (28mm f1.8 is $720 CAD regular, 35mm f2 is almost always on sale at $700 CAD, and the 50mm f1.8 is almost cheaper than a night out at $190 CAD regular).... ...All of those lenses also work for infrared photography too with no hotspots reported, niiiiice. And the silent shutter seems quiet enough to work for street photography as well o_O
      AAAAND the Astronomik clip-in filters work with the 6D....
      Why all the comparing this and that with a bunch of other things? Well, I like to buy things for more than just one use if possible, aka if I get a higher end full frame camera for astrophotography, I'd also want to be able to do other forms of photography as well, and so needless to say was pleasantly surprised when a lot of the stuff I wanted to do CAN be done too... That and when spare money is limited, one has to analyze things in such a manner. Being able to pick up a few lenses AND a modified body for the price of just the GH5S body alone
      My only complaint now is that since M42/the Orion Nebula would be framed rather small with a full frame sensor I might have to look into getting a bigger telescope than the one I was planning on getting (was originally looking at getting the William Optics Zenithstar 73 or GT81).... But it looks like I might have "no choice at all" but to eventually get that 8" Celestron Edge HD alongside the smaller refractor I was looking at getting anyways :P Oh right, there's no tilty-flippy screen either, but I suspect I could live with such given I'd be using my G85 as my main camera for regular photography anyways.
      Many thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to give that particular camera a try and see how it goes for me with feel and ergonomics, and then go from there :)

    • @WhiteWulfe
      @WhiteWulfe Před 6 lety

      All that said though, I am curious as to why you say it's rather bad for photography and the reasoning behind such. It has more or less the same sensor in one of the more popular new colour astrophotography cameras (ZWO 294), has fairly low dark current noise, and all that...
      Sure, it doesn't have the same resolution as other solutions out there, and doesn't have IBIS, but I'm definitely curious as to why you're one of the few that are outright recommending against it given its strengths with low light alongside its smaller size. Doubly curious due to the rumours about the G90/G95 having the same sensor, but in the G85 body. (we'll see if that actually holds true, but still). Most have said it does so decently, provided you are willing to accept the downsides that come along with the benefits of it being a four thirds sensor.

    • @stevenuseda6317
      @stevenuseda6317 Před 6 lety

      White Wulfe my issue as far as photography for the camera are the low resolution/ lack of detail and actually the noise because of that low resolution. I can tell you firsthand that even Tripod work...using iso 160 and stopped down to f8, still really shows a low amount of detail that I’m just personally not happy with. I have tried casual pictures with my gh5s and the image quality just isn’t there for me. As far as using it for other types of photography, I can’t see myself doing that either...because the autofocus is rather slow and can’t even be used for casual portraits accurately in my experience. I just picked up a used canon 6d for $700usd and if I waned a decent astrophotography lens then I could get the rokinon 14mm 2.8. Suits my needs well, I just keep a Metabones Speedbooster handy and use the gh5s for great video quality and my canon 6d for inexpensive but good full frame photography. That and now my lenses: sigma 35mm 1.4, sigma 18-35 1.8, Tokina 11-16 2.8, canon 70-200 2.8 is ii. Can be used on both cameras (for the most part)

    It's a shame they kicked out the IBIS, but you may as well regard this a cinema camera... and those never rely on the operator needing IBIS and superb C-AF either. In that regard it is a very good camera with respectable performance. Never thought performance out of a 4/3" sensor would be this good this soon. But... it has two big downsides... 1. It's not actually a cinema camera. It's great, but it's not exactly RAW or ProRes. 2. The price... it's rather expensive. The upcoming Blackmagic BMPCC4K seems a steal in comparison... and that's an actual cinema camera capable of RAW and ProRes and even comes with the DaVinci Resolve Studio NLE Suite included. It's hard to ignore. But the GH5S does have better practicality (mostly batterylife and vari-angle screen). The GH5 in turn would give you the flexibility of IBIS for more of an allround feel. The G9 with more of a stills edge. But it's good to have choice! :D

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  Před 6 lety +3

      I would definitely wait until the release of BMPCC 4K before drawing conclusions, honestly I don't miss RAW or ProRes on GH5S at all, that 10-bit + V-Log combination is amazing, but we will see how the BMPCC 4K performs. I personally don't like physical configuration of BMPCC 4K, but maybe I will change my opinion. There are also rumors about FW update for GH5S coming at Photokina, so it may get ProRes Raw.

    • @shiznuts
      @shiznuts Před 6 lety

      Yeah, I'm surprised (kind of in a bad way) that there hasn't been any real demo footage of the BMPCC4K. And it's supposed to ship out first week of next month! Are people supposed to blindly put in their pre-orders? But it will be interesting to see what it's about. BM cameras always produced very filmic looking thick gradable footage, so that's something to be really excited for. Of course it depends on ones wants and needs, but I think it can be a very dope cam for sure!

    • @Roflmao0001
      @Roflmao0001 Před 6 lety

      The BMPCC 4k also gets hit with a two times crop factor when shooting high speed. I neeeearly jumped ship from the GH5s dreaming to it, but that crop is so off-putting to me. And on a completely non spec note, the BMPCC is just so dang uuuugly and that matters a surprising amount to me lol.

The GH5 is such a Beautiful Camera for Video Amazing. I know that most professionals dont use and probably never use Autofocus but, Honestly, It would be great to have in a camera this beastly. Ideally, you should hold out for (probably) an A6700 for some (hopeful) benefits like the flip screen. But from a purely objective stand point, if you're a newbie, the A7III 'just works' right out of the box (of course, after figuring out the menu system). I was considering a G9 and GH5S (which came out a few weeks before Sony launched the A7III) and even rented a GH5 to test (perfect camera, bad AF and terrible in low light)- but ended up getting the A7III. I'm not sure what you mean by that, it uses multi-aspect ratio sensor, so it chooses the pixels based on the aspect ratios, so the answer is probably no.

      The Hybrid Shooter right, not all are used, and I wondered if....
      GH5 has it, google it, Thanks!!!

      Yeah, you mean 4:3 anamorphic. GH5S can shoot 4:3 anamorphic as well with full height of the sensor (it is shown in the video), but not full width since it is multi-aspect ratio sensor.

    The strange thing is that I am shooting in 1080p at 18mm with the Sigma 18-35 1.8 and the Metabones 0.71x and I should be getting around 23mm Full frame equivalent but instead I am getting a more cropped image, here is a comparison with the Canon Eos R at 24mm.

      No, you should get 25.6mm FF eqv. 18*2*0.71=25.56

      The Hybrid Shooter thanks for the answer. I have been told that the GH5s got a crop favor of 1.8x/1.9x but even with a crop of 2x o should be getting a 25mm like you said and the images I compared are not 25mm as you can see, is way more cropped and I have found nothing online comparing the GH5S with metabones to a full frame camera.

      @@lenufotografiaefilmagem7539 GH5S has 4:3 aspect ratio whereas the EOS R has 3:2 ratio, FOV is measured diagonally, so you always loose more FOV with M43.

      @@boubnadproduction2902 Yes, I am sure, it is just a repackaged GH5 from 2017 with very minor upgrades.
