      Both professions are great, but of course I am more supportive of being a PT. The difference in schooling is a lot more to become a OCS PT tho. In order to become a PT, you need to have a bachelors degree (4-6 years), and graduate from a DPT program (2-3 years). Then after you finish your DPT, you need to do a residency for 1 year and then take the certification program. You can also bypass the residency and start working as a PT, but you need to accumulate like 2000 hours (or something like that) of outpatient ortho clinical hours before you are eligible to take the certification exam. Hope that helps!

I live in NYC and have been very indecisive on the career choice because I fear that the one I choose would not be to my liking and I don’t want to be stuck in a career that I don’t like. I want a mix of passion and great money. My career choices are Nurse Practitioner, Registered Dietitian, and Physical Therapy. Since I was 15 when I first started lifting weights (fell in love) I’ve been interested in fitness, health and nutrition and wanted to incorporate it all into a career and have my own private practice/business. Registered Dietitian is low pay and high college debt since by the time I finish my bachelors and start internship I would have to go back to get my masters (2024 mandatory to have masters in nutrition before going for internship and sit for exam) and that’s just not worth all the debt since the salary is 50-70k Nurse Practitioner is interesting but I’m having difficulty finding a way to incorporate nutrition, lifting weights and health into it. Struggle is real when I’m so indecisive 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️😭😭

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts and journey mark! I appreciate you being vulnerable and posting your thought progress. I think if you really want to focus on nutrition and create meal plans for people, then the only legal way you can do that is through RD. (A lot of fitness people out there will give customized meal plans for people and that’s absolutely wrong - please don’t be like one of those people.) If fitness is a big part of your life and you really want to preach exercise, PT is going to be your best way to go. But.. like you mentioned, the debt and income ratio is tough because it’s a lot of money for school. But.... a lot of PTs end up starting their own practice because you’ll be well equipped to have authority and impact due to your doctorate degree. As far a NP, it’s a good paying job for the debt, but their practice is medicine. Idk if that’s an area you want to get into. Of course you can educate with utilizing proper nutrition and exercise but that won’t be your main source of treatment options unlike PT or RD

      ReeRee L woaaaah that’s awesome that all those interest you! Which one is the most interesting? So why do you want to get into that? What’s your meaning behind choosing this field? Do you want to specialize in it (like get a certification) or just work in the field?

      liftforchange I think sports is most interesting at the moment. I played many sports as a kid but basketball into my first undergrad degree. I tore both my acl’s so I spent a lot of time with sports PTs & sports med docs. I saw it as a very fun and rewarding career. Neuro because of when I got in an car accident and had a serious concussion, I saw a PT that specialized in concussions so I saw this as an option mainly out of curiosity. And pelvic floor because I think a lot of women go through life in pain. Its more common than you think. It gets ignored by so many doctors and I think this would be a way to raise awareness and be a part of the solution! I think I’d like to specialize in sports or pelvic floor or work in any field of the 3

    For sports specialist you said you need your CPR and then 1 of 4 certifications but you never said them. What are they?

    Is home health and/or SNF give more pay than sports PT?

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt  Před 3 lety

      I think it would depend on the opportunity you get as a sports PT. A sports PT definitely has the most potential to make money but it would depend on the position right? But home health and or SNF would consistently pay more you know?

    Hey!
    Do you by any chance have the document of the requirements? I'm just starting school and I would love to look at it. A couple specialties have been on my mind.

      @drjustinleedpt  Před 2 lety

      I believe the document is in the link in the bio. Check it out and if you cannot find it, let me know

      @@drjustinleedpt thank you for your response, I clicked on the link but looks like they've changed it around a bit. So each area has different links to click through before getting the requirements. Basically, it is no longer one document with everything on it, which I'd prefer. Either way thank you as now I know where to go

    I only knew about 3 different specialties so thank u for this! Idk if you already answered this before but are PTs able to switch specialties throughout their career?

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt  Před 2 lety

      Wow! Yes, there are sooooo much more! Of course you’re able to switch within their career. If you are looking to make a dramatic switch, depending on the specialty, you may have to get additional certifications to do this. But if it’s relatively similar, then you can switch easily. Glad this was helpful Nicole! Which speciality sounded coolest to you?

    For a sports specialty, is it possible to specialize in one sport? Or is it a specialty for all sports...just got curious :)

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt  Před 3 lety +2

      Evan Pena you can definitely get into more than one sport but as you go through your residency I would recommend that you try to niche down into one or two sports so that you can really learn the bio mechanics and everything else related so that you can become the “GO TO” person

      Evan Pena YESS!!! And since you have that under your experience, you can not only talk about muscles, joints, nervous system that is required for the sport of tennis, but you can take it another step further and discuss technique too! Sounds like a perfect avenue for you Evan..

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt  Před 3 lety +2

      Maddie Bilbo ahhh a lot of people mix that up! it’s not necessarily a specialty because there isn’t a specialist certification for it. However, PTs can treat patients with vestibular issues. I would say it’s more of a “niche” but I can see how it can be confused for specialty too! Great clarification question Maddie
