N Ireland unionists fear Scottish independence

  • Nowhere in the UK is the fear of Scotland breaking off from the rest of the UK as pronounced as in protestant, unionist Northern Ireland.

Many there have Scottish heritage, and feel betrayed by the Scots' nationalist cause.

Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee has been to meet them to hear their views on the Scottish independence debate.

***** I'm sure the pope said each case was different. The MSM media obviously has spin docs making it sound different.
If he want's Scotland to stick to it's state as separation is a bad idea he must really be against Northern Ireland being part of the UK. It should obviously be re-unified going by his supposed stance here.

    • @5GCHEMTRAILVACCINESFORBATS
      @5GCHEMTRAILVACCINESFORBATS Před 10 lety +5

***** The Pope’s comments which have been reported as Him entering into the debate on Scottish independence are as follows:
Does the conflict between Catalunya and Spain worry you?
"All division worries me. There is independence by emancipation and independence by secession. The independences by emancipation, for example, are American, that they were emancipated from the European States. The independences of nations by secession is a dismemberment, sometimes it’s very obvious. Let’s think of the former Yugoslavia. Obviously, there are nations with cultures so different that couldn’t even be stuck together with glue. The Yugoslavian case is very clear, but I ask myself if it is so clear in other cases. Scotland, Padania, Catalunya. There will be cases that will be just and cases that will not be just, but the secession of a nation without an antecedent of mandatory unity, one has to take it with a lot of grains of salt and analyze it case by case."
The media coverage of the pope entering the debate is misleading and disproportionate. The British media, as always in the debate, never misses a chance to mislead the public.

The situation in Northern Ireland is an ethnic conflict, British (Protestants) v Irish (Catholic). The British element was brought to the north of Ireland by England in the 17th century. Ironically, having created the problem through the aggressive empire building of the past, Britain now wants to walk away!
Westminster should announce they are pulling out of Northern Ireland in 10 years time and give residency in Great Britain to anyone in the north who wants it. Problem solved...

"Alex Salmond is a complete and utter born again Jacobite.....he's still living in the 17th century...Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, always has been and always will be" that's is by far the stupidest most ignorant and most hypocritical statement in history, 1 Alex Salmond is in favour of the current monarchy, 2. The Orange Order is still actually living in the 17th century commemorating battles half of them have never even studied, 3. Scotland hasn't always been part of the United Kingdom since it didn't exist until 1707, Scotland was founded in 843 AD as the Kingdom of Alba, and the Union of the crowns took place in 1603. I will finish this debunking by going back even further and quoting an even older document, the declaration of Arbroath "..for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself." Hi Robert, I havent lived in Glasgow or Scotland for over 20 years and didnt have the vote as a result. I would have voted NO, both my parents did but my sister voted and campaigned heavily for YES, she hasnt spoken to me since the referendum. My problem was 1: Economic, the case wasnt strong enough IMO and 2: As a Scotsman with an English wife and 3 English children I despised the anti English sentiment then and now in my dear homeland. The idiots, on both sides, who voted along religious, monarchy and sectarian lines, and there were many, need treatment. Sadly we are stuck with them.

***** how you doing. I can see why you would've voted no btw. Because I know many people who did the same. For the exact same reason as yourself. "The economic one". And tbh this is where the nationalists fell short. They faught a strong campaign. But never went into enough detail about the economy.
I don't know so much about anti English sentiment. Maybe anti Westminster? But As I honestly haven't came across any anti English, not lately anyway. Infact not since I was a kid. And that was only family members taking the mickey. Because I was born in England myself lol.
What does get me though is the way your sister has blanked you. That's just sad. But this is the nature of the beast. That's been unleashed up here. And yours isn't the first story I've heard like it.
I'll be honest with you. I've been a nationalist since I started voting. Not far off thirty years now. (Scary). And I thought I had it bad. But your sister's not alone. Honestly it's as if they've drugged the water supply up here. With some sort of crackpot nationalist drug lol.
Don't get me wrong there's been a lot of good came out of this. There's a lot of people interested in politics now. But some people as always. Go too far.
And last but not least. The religious, royalist/anti and sectarian reason's. Anybody who admits to being swayed by any of this. And there is loads of them btw. As you said yourself, definitely need treatment .lol

I wish British Journalists would stop calling Northern Ireland 'Ulster'. Ulster derives from the Vikings and refers to the Kingdom of Ulster which is 9 counties - not the 6 counties of Northern Ireland. 3 Ulster counties are in the Republic. Liked the part at 0.31 regarding Alex Salmond, 'a born again Jacobite still living in the 17th century'; - this quote coming from 17th century planters from England and low land Scotland who forced themselves onto the North of the island of Ireland and kicked the native Irish off their land. I'm afraid Ulster Unionism is unraveling and will soon become a thing of the past. They are regarded as Irish by the British, anyway.Good report from Al Jazeera who lawys give a different angle on news stories.

They did not become British subjects by choice, they were forced. 100 years ago, separation was not possible; today it is. Scotland has always been strong and proud and they've earned the right to try and achieve their full identity. If they do, running their own independent county will be the big challenge. I take my example from Québec wanting to separate from Canada. The desire to make Québec its own country is very strong for many, but achieving that would be financially and culturally challenging. While the Northern Irish are right to be concerned with what happens with Scottish independence, it isn’t actually their business. There’s a difference between what is your concern and what is your business. And no Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 hasn’t always been a part of the United Kingdom, Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 was the first to join. After being overrun by the England. Scotland was the first country to freely join the United Kingdom, there was equality there.
But Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 isn’t beholden to Northern Ireland to stay in the Union. Just because Scottish independence might knot up Northern Irish politics.
The United Kingdom has been called four countries united under one kingdom-But that isn’t true. It’s three countries and one colony. Northern Ireland is a British holding, not a country. A country filled with folk who wish to exist in a state of perpetual colonization-But that’s not a stable state of affairs, and it’s not on Scotland to put them at ease.
    Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, Northern Ireland…

Scotland isn't going to vote yes. The separatist element are good at making making a big noise and yes, they do have some support, but the quiet, socially conservative majority in Scotland will never allow them to destroy the union. Even after all the Tories have done, going right back to Thatcher, that underlying steadfastness remains. Don't just take my word for it though, check the bookies odds - they're all 3 or 4 to 1 against - and they never lie when it comes to money!

It's awfull in my opinion that we didn't succeeded especially now with the looming shadow of brexit . I sincerely hope brexit is a success even though i didnt vote for it.I would love to be wrong about it ,I think there are hugely difficult times ahead for ordinary people throughout the UK

if we are "selling the country out big time and are nothing but traitors"(excellent selling point btw ) Why are you marching to keep us in the union? If you want to talk about betrayal you might want to look at the government south of the border. I feel sorry for you marching out in the cold, I really do but I am still voting Yes.

You will have 900,000 people who will feel they are living under occupation. The people in at least Antrim and Down will fight for their independence. They could be fighting you as long as you were Westminster. Do you really want Belfast to turn into Stalingrad?
