How to replace an interlocking roof tile

  • This video shows how to replace an interlocking roof tile, such as the Marley Ludlow Major, or the Redland renown. Roof tiles can break easily and in most cases replacing the broken roof tile is not difficult. When accessing the roof it is essential to use the correct equipment so either a suitable scaffold or a roof ladder should be used.

While cleaning the moss from my roof I found a broken tile that had been bodge repaired but was hidden by the moss growth. I watched this video and was able to change the tile for a spare I had and it went just as described. Very pleased and thank you for the video.

Sometimes when I talk, I think there is something wrong with me as I tend to use as few words as possible in each sentence. Then I get a phone call from a guy in London and he can talk for 60 minutes without even stopping to take a breath 😂

Thank you sincerely, I’m autistic and have been working through renovating my house. During the disassembly of the scaffold for the main roof re-felt, I cracked a tile with a long pole. @@ultimatehandyman removed and replaced the broken tile, then noticed 2 more, where the scaffolder had walked on the roof. Second one swapped no probs, but the third one was two courses down from the Ridge, so was inflexible. Had to use a rubber mallet to even get the tiles above to retract, then they all became stuck. Fought them for 10 minutes no movement and it started raining☔️ 😭😭😭.😆🙄🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️ Luckily I had a professional car door card tool, which rocks them up and back. Then i used the claw of a hammer to bully them back into place, nightmare, but finally got it sorted😛😛🕺🏼🕺🏼😆😆❤️❤️❤️

Thank you so much, just got home and a tile right next to a velux window has slipped down. After watching this video going via the safety of the velux window with just my arms outside I pushed the above tile up, slid up the loose tile and screwed it back down followed by pulling back the tile above. Sorted!. The original nail for some reason wasn't long enough, the long thin screw worked a treat.

    Great video.
We had scaffolding up on our kitchen roof to get to the main roof to replace broken and missing tiles and the scaffolding broke 6 tiles under the boards they'd placed to spread the load. Scaffolders said they'd inform the roofer. We've tried for a week to get in touch but all means of communication have failed so now I have to source replacement tiles and do it myself before the rain comes next week 😡.

We had three wasps nests about two years ago. I searched the internet and the overwhelming advice was not to try and get rid of them yourself, as they recommended special clothing. I called out a pest control firm, a woman turned up in shorts and just sprayed them with a chemical and it wiped them out LOL.

I live in a townhouse (3 story building). I had couple of tiles were out place they were partly sitting on the gutter, so I called a roofer to fix it. 1st company I called L Smith And Sons Roofing Ltd, said it's too dangerous to remove them just by climbing up a ladder. They'll need scaffolding it'll cost 3 to 4 grand to fix it.
Thought it's rather steep, so I contacted Heritage Roofing, and these guys did it with just a ladder. They found new problems while doing an inspection and swear to god, when I saw them walking on the roof without scaffolding not even a safety line I sh!t my pants, questioned the boss about that and he told me not to worry, they're pros. 🤷
Does £250 for repairs and £300 for an inspection sound reasonable to you?

They should fit, I have never heard of new tiles not fitting an older roof.

@@ultimatehandyman Thanks for the reply. Well not long ago an old roofer said to me after they turned metric they never fit perfectly so if I have my verge redone and lose some tiles through breakages they'd all have to be replaced with new ones even several rows back. Didn't make sense to me. I thought maybe he was after my tiles for another job. Still haven't had the verge done which has rotten corners, considering a dry verge but don't like the look of them much.

Hi thanks for the video. I want to replace few files but don't know if all these tiles are universal sizes?

I'm no expert on tiles but if you get for example a Redland renown tile they should all be the same size. If you remove one of the tiles it should have the make on the underside.

Hi mate , great vid , I have a dormer bungalow and all the water from the fibreglass part of the roof is channled down one row of tiles due to it collecting in the dormer gutter and flowing through the down pipe and as a result this one row of tiles are starting to look very thin due to the cascading water taking off the sandy surface , ( the tiles look identical to the ones you show in your video ) is it possible that I can just swap them around with some other tiles that are not getting the same treatment elsewhere on the roof ? You're advise would be greatly appreciated . Also now subscribed , have watched several of your other vids and have found them to be really helpful and informative, thanks and keep up the great work 👍

Yes, you could do that, or you could get some new tiles and replace some of them.
I've just seen a house where they have painted their roof, apparently the coating will last for 20 years. I'll be keeping an eye on that house to see how well the paint lasts!

I need to replace a tile in the 4th row out of 5 on the porch roof. I assume as the 5th row goes up against the wall that those tiles can't slide up. how do I deal with this situation? 5th row is also covered with lead flushing, if that's the word. thanks! also great video!

You will have to remove the ridge caps to remove the last row of tiles. The lead can normally be lifted carefully and then tapped back down afterwards using a block of wood or soft mallet.
      Thanks for the comment ;-)
