      like i said doug, i have been wanting to buy one for years. all the ones in my price range were worn out junk. i was pleased to come across such a lightly used rollback that seems to have been well cared for. unfortunately, many others think is a great truck and want it also.

    Pretty nice, Jerr Dan beds are worthy of good service, I always liked the "idle up" feature on their controls. No high idle cable holding throttle at a high whine sound while your hooking up or setting triangles around now with nice beacons for warning system. Yes I like "Lipstick red" as a good color to maintain. I was just a kid when I did my first Imron paint job. ... it was a tough paint, I seen a truck that I knew had a dent in the door but the paint had popped from it and it looked smooth or hid dent. We used that paint on the haul road where thousands of miles were put on gravel and tail to tail in train mode. Trucks with regular paint were either chiped or smooth with absolutely no paint left as to Imron was like glass, just wash and go, no wax or polish unless it was the ton of dirt on dash. Wonder they didn't eat themselves with that much dirt chewing out stuff not intended for that. That is why I think the marine paint would hold up better back there... or dexron paint.. it is super too

    That is a score,the 650's with the Cat are highly sought after around here. The guys that run them around here keep them and of all the rollbacks I've driven over the years they are my favorite and I'm not a Ford guy at all.
    Whoever had that took really good care of it. It almost looks like the wheel lift has never been used. I was surprised to see that many miles because the bed is also in decent shape for being aluminum.
    Its nice they replaced the fuel tank too.I don't know why but they always rusted under the powder coat like crazy.As for the T handles in the wheel lift, they've been a problem for years. Its like Jerdan made them from butter. It only takes the slightest bump and they got bent and jammed in the threads. There's companies that make replacements but its just as easy to make your own. I would make them from a long bolt and I'd use a nut and washers to make a collar on it to hold a small stainless cable that we'd attach to the arm. They would always vibrate loose if they weren't seized up and the cable kept them from getting lost. They also saved us from losing the arms because the guys would see the T bolts dangling a lot easier then if it was missing.
    Be glad that the lights work, those light bars are garbage and would always rattle to bits. Between that and the wiring that runs inside the sleeve that travels in the bed you can end up with a big mess. I think its a 7wire cable (don't hold me to that) inside there. But when that starts giving you trouble its best to just replace it. I've seen too many guys monkey around with trying to fix it only to spend 3 times what it'd take just to pull and replace it. Granted you're not one to half ass things but its still worth mentioning. If you have taillight issues and its not the junction blocks its most likely the traveling cable. Last but least is the wiring junction blocks, I'd recommend going through them to make sure there's no hacked repairs etc and clean all the terminals and seal them the best you can. I've had problems on nearly new trucks because of how its designed. The truck looks like they really took care of it so I doubt there'll be any shady repairs. But clean terminals and some dielectric grease will most likely save you some headaches later.
    If I think of anything else I'll pass it along but you scored a nice rig with that one. Jer Dan makes a great bed and the only issues I've had over the years has been wiring and the T bolts for the most part. The rest just comes down to maintenance.

    Very nice truck, especially for its age. The best part is... its a crew cab! We had a bunch of those f650 roll backs years ago. The only downside.... the ones with hydraulic brakes seem to chew through brakes. If we could get 15K on a full brake job we were doing good. This was a busy towing company in a metro area so your mileage may vary. In comparison an f550 or 5500 dodge would get 4 times that mileage with the same people driving, at the same company, doing the same type of work. Other than that they were pretty much trouble free. Nice score, sir!

    We had a 2004 F650 with A C7 Acert, and a 4 speed Alison. After 430000 miles I remember having to replace the king pins 2 or 3 times. They were causing uneven tire wear and wandering loose steering while driving. The only other problems I remember it having were Baldwin fuel filters creating air intrusion symptoms, and some sort of issue with the transmission control module causing it to get stuck in 1st gear unless manually shifted, after splashing through a large puddle on a rainy day. Otherwise solid truck

    Looks like whoever had it took good care of it, she's pretty clean and those miles arent anything with that Cat engine in there, seen more than a few trucks with that cat in it with way way more miles than this rig and still chugging along. This might be one of those buy were you maybe should hang on to it unless someone makes you too good of an offer to walk away from, I could see this getting used for a good long while before you have to do any real work to it. I am sure someone will make an offfer your way though, it is pretty clean and great shape, question is are you going to want to part with with it.
    Either way sweet deal! Most guys that have these work the hell out of em and by the time they are selling its because its beat up and they have gotten all they think they can out of it and have a new or newer one ready to go. You'll have to keep us updated on what you find with the pulling to the right, I dont think it will be anything to major, otherwise you'd have picked up on it on your drive back home.

      i really like this truck. i dont want to sell it but i will if the price is right. it could last me a very long time. i was so excited about the condition that it was hard to keep a poker face when i was trying to buy it. that pull could be a bad shock that let the tire wear like that, a worn king pin or tie rod. regardless it shouldnt be anything too big.

    The Cat could be a 3116 or a 3216 engine. If I recall correctly, the block doesn't use a cylinder sleeve, so unless you catch engine problems early, it's a new block or pay to have a sleeve machined.
    My issue with the CAT medium duty engines is the specialty tools required to service them. Being a CAT, prices on replacement parts are high.
    It would have been nice if the truck had the Cummins in it, as Ford used CAT, Cummins, and Power Stroke engines (the head gasket and EGR blowing 6.0) in the 650 and 750 series trucks of this age.
    Still all said, extremely clean 2004 truck. With the aluminum bed not being all gouged up, she was a garage queen, even with the mileage.

  • @TheHillbillygeek
    @TheHillbillygeek Před 5 lety +6

    I’m looking at an 07 ram 3500 dump truck with a 6.7 Cummins in it. 86,000 miles and they’re asking $11,500. Good deal? Runs and drives fine it seems but I just am not familiar with diesels! You should do a video of what to look for on a used diesel if you haven’t already, for the noobs like me hah

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  Před 5 lety +3

      ok so you need to know more about the truck before it can be put in the "good deal " column. what transmission? 2wd or 4wd? interior trim package? stock engine? anyone been in the engine? transmission ever been worked on? standard cab or crew? if it is an automatic, i would run that truck for 25-50 miles before i would buy it due to the fact that the automatic transmissions were such a problem. i would hope it doesnt have any aftermarket add ons or a tuner. the year, price, miles and the fact that it is dump truck makes me think it could be a great deal but do your due diligence. if you are not familiar with diesels, take it to a diesel mechanic. preferably one who works on fleets of the dodge trucks with the 6.7 cummins engines. that is the guy who will know what to look for and what you can expect to happen at what mileages.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  Před 5 lety

      i look at it like this....if it is rated to handle 10,000 lbs on the deck, lifting 7000lbs worth of rear axle weight shouldnt be a problem. however, i would make it a regular practice. i did it in the video just to show that the hydraulics were plenty strong.

    • @bitlittle457
      @bitlittle457 Před 5 lety

      My apologies wasn't trying to be smart we call that walking the truck and yes the bed is rated for 10 thousand however when you stretch it pass the carriage for the bed it's not rated for like that and the channels on the bed won't take the weight a steel bed will but aluminium won't again my apologies wasn't trying to be smart

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  Před 5 lety +1

      No, i didnt take it like that at all. i took as it as someone who had experience with the jerr damn aluminum beds. it would be foolish of me not to take good information and warnings. i didnt notice that in my reply i said "i would make it a regular practice" i meant to say that i would not make it a regular practice.

    Deck winch on those is usually 10k or 12k hydraulic.... nice clean truck.
    Edit: crew cab usually means a long distance transport or road and wreck truck- they often have to bring the occupants of a car and their belongings somewhere when they pick up a car from a crash or a breakdown. Those guys dislike using the wheel lift; I know some that don't even carry the L-bars on the truck.
    The guys that use the wheel lift or T-bar lift a lot are the ones that transport vehicles for junkyards or do parking lot patrol; they haul two cars often, and tend to be two-door trucks, since they rarely have passengers.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  Před 5 lety

      i agree the wheel lift is nice to have on the rare occasion you need it but i will likely put everything i can on the deck....less risk of damage that way also.

    • @southjerseysound7340
      @southjerseysound7340 Před 5 lety

      We get swamped with breakdowns from out of town in the summer and it's quite common to double down and head out of town.
      As far as the wheel lift goes,its like any tool. As long as it's used properly its not a problem. It's guys that don't know what they're doing that give it a bad reputation.

I remember having a grand marquis on the roof, an expedition on the bed and a f150 on the lift backwards, I think I was down to 45 in a 60 on some hills.

    Those flat spots on the front R. H. tire are caused by the front axel is turning to far to the right causing the tire to skid in a sharp turn causing intermittent flat spots. With the shoulder being worn on the right side of the right tire and inside of the left tire it will cause the weight to transfer to the lower tread causing it to pull to the right.

    Looks good to me...might be a 1 driver truck (& they didn't want no one else in it) minor cosmetics for age/miles/service, nothing leaking on the ground & tight gear stick/gears...l'm thinking they may have caught the curb/dropped off the pavement with that passenger wheel/tire - this truck looks like it swings wide, but that's good for going straight up the road...what's that drum brake thing at the rear end yoke

    • @j.c.smithprojects
