The EA888.3 and now EA888.4 are great options for reliability and power potential. The MBQ engines have a great following with tons of support. I personally have a EA888.3 in my GLI making well over 400 whp with only bolt ons. Tons of fun and still gets >40 mpg while cruising.
My two cents:
Avoid 2.0 TDI with 200hp, loves to drink oil
Avoid 1.4 and 1.5 TSI EVO/EVO2 (cylinder deactivation): horrible to drive at lower rpm
Look for EA888 gen 3/3b 2.0TSI 190hp versions or 2.0 TDI 110/150hp versions, very reliable and well made engines.
I don’t know the others.
2.0 TSI with 245hp is good as well, but it’s very old at this point.
I own a 2020 golf with a 1.5 Tsi engine. I agree with you on the Cylinder deactivation. It's a bit annoying sometimes.
But the car has great power in general and also at low RPM and it feels pretty smooth. Almost like a Diesel sometimes. The fuel economy is amazing too.
Love your content 🤞🏾keep it up.
Thank you so much 🤗 I really appreciate your support and encouragement.
I didn't hear anything about the 07k 2.5L inline 5, just the TSFI. The NA 2.5 is bullet proof
Ya pizza is my favorite as well.
I’m planning a tdi engine swap into my cj5, I’m looking for low end torque I use this Jeep to move logs for my sawmill. I know I’ll have to use the H beam rods as the stock rods are made of spaghetti I’ve read?? I’m looking at the ALH and the BHW engines. Which will run better on straight run diesel? Thank you for you videos they are very informative! God bless you and the family.
Have a EA288 DFSB engine in a Skoda Yeti. It’s total hell to live with. DPF / EGR / DEF faults make for a toxic mix. My old EA189 CEGA Yeti was amazing and has already reached 475,000 miles with only one EGR change which was easy as it was on the front of the engine and swapped in 40 minutes. Still on original DPF and turbo. The DEF on my EA288 is causing havoc as I’m advised the Adblue has crystalyzed in the EGR cooler. Could have bought an old EA189 for half the price. All these emissions additions on diesels are making our cars unusable and not fit for purpose.
After experience, I see that these engines are excellent and very practical, but do not forget to change the timing belt and water pump

1.6 tdi from 2015
i have 2014 golf 7 2.0 TDI EA288...the best for me...planning to buy the V6 Amarok
how many miles on it? any major issues with the engine?
I’ve also got an a3 1.4tfsi 2014, I briefly looked under the car at the exhaust system, and to me it looks like there’s 3 boxes including the backbox seems like there’s 2 resonators, not sure if you’ve seen the same thing. Also when i come to park in a parking space when going very slow and going full lock to swing out to get a better angle on the reverse, i get a really loud humming sound, i was thinking it could be the power steering pump.
I have a 14 passat tdi with apr ecu+tcu tune on 86k miles. I hope it lasts a very long time.
My a3 sportback 1.4 tfsi is perfect never had a problem (almost 200.000km) still going like brand new (oil change every 5000km)
How do you rate the 1.4tfsi COD vs the 1.0tsi found in the up gti regarding fuel economy and reliability?
Mines a 2.0 tfsi CDLA in the S3, 2010.
I have a 2.0 TDI right now and did a few mods to it. I’ve been thinking about getting a 2.0 tfsi, looks to be a little cheaper to mod and don’t have to worry about the back smoke.
There is quite a lot of potential on the TFSi engines. You just won't get the fuel economy you see on a diesel, but IMHO that is a small price to pay.
the 2.0 TDI, is it the EA288?
Strewth what a missed opportunity not mentioning yhe 1,6tdi CAYC motor.Just clocking up 350000 km from new with mine.Only negative being the injectors fail two at a time(180k and 325k)..vw programming methinks.Btw never had the software "update" from vw.Still averaging 4,8l/100km.
I am totally regretting missing this one out, they are not as popular as the other engines, but are overlooked gems. I will plan a reshoot of this video for you 1.6TDi owners.
Good video but would have liked mention of the 1.6tdi.
As I have never owned a 1.6 TDi I felt I couldn't give an honest appraisal of it. But you are right I should have mentioned it in this video, so I'll plan for a reshoot of this video and make sure that the 1.6TDi is included.

Keep up the good work, always interested in your opinions.
There doesn't seem to be much information on the newer 1.5 TSI engines. Some people even claim that the ECU is locked and hence won't be tunable. Any thoughts?
Many new ECU's are encrypted with new checksums but it is only a matter of time before they are cracked. The 1.5 is very similar to the 1.4 but it used the Atkison cycle for economy which dramatically changes the engine sound.
They said the Tricore ECU couldn't be mapped but it is now. The short term solution is to use a piggy back module like the one from TDI Tuning that I had on my 1.4 TFSi.
I guess you are talking about the 2023 1.5's?
Does the exhaust gas goes through the DPF first before going through the EGR in the 1.6 tdi 2010 cayc engine, aswell?
Old type engine that one. I very much doubt it
1.0/1.2 tsi?
the 2.0 TDI, is it the EA288 engine we are talking about?
It went EA189 - a very good PD version, the EA288 CR had the early emission scandal but reliability improved toward the end of it's lifespan, then they did the EA288 EVO (Gen 3) from around 2012/15 which in my view is much improved.
2015 golf tdi 147k miles all stock should I modify it
Yes is the short answer, the longer answer is covered in this video czcams.com/video/Ic-eQhUY83o/video.html
Meanwhile me waiting to hear about the 1.0 TSI... :/
Pizza is the best food in the world.
Amen to that. In fact most Italian foods do it for me. Lasagna & Pizza Anyone?
This video is very inaccurate. Gen 1/3/4 tsi and 2.5/vr6 are the best project engines.
