  • The modern TDi engine offers great returns when tuned or remapped and also gives better fuel economy.
    Is it still worth getting an older TDi remapped? Will a remap affect reliability of the engine? How can you remap a higher mileage or older TDi engine and avoid reliability issues and problems?
    Is diesel tuning, ecu flashing and remapping a good upgrade? Should you map an older or high mileage diesel engine? Are TDI tunes and TDI ECU flash tunes worth carrying out on your car? Find out everything you need to know in this video.
    This applies to all older Tdi CRdi CDTi and any turbo diesel engine with a higher mileage. 1.3 TDI 1.4 TDi 1.5 TDi 1.6 TDi 1.7 TDI 1.8 TDi 1.9 TDi 2.0 Tdi 2.5 Tdi 2.9 Tdi 3.0 Tdi etc..
    A few common sense upgrades will make the tuning go smoothly and help you get the most from your ECU tune on your diesel engine.
    Find out the common problems we see all the time on older diesel engines after a tune and how to avoid these completely.
    IS it safe to tune, upgrade, modify or do do tuning on a diesel engine?
    A viewer on this channel asked us about remapping their TDi engine but they were concerned about the clutch and if it would affect the reliability of the engine.
    We look at the pros and cons of remaps and suggest ways to get a remap done without unduly affecting your cars reliability in the long term.

    I’ve been considering getting my beetle done, I had the cambelt, WP, aux and tensioner done last October so I know it’s a healthy engine. It’s only done 113k too. I get 40-45 urban dependent on weather, as we know dervs suffer in winter. Lower calorific value “winter fuel” plus ambient engine temp from cold.
    I commented on you egr vid yesterday. Subbed now 👍🏼
    Edit… Years ago I had a 306 dturbo S
    Bosch fuel pump, a few turns of the screw and I shortened the actuator rod to turbo. It flew compared to standard but lost power once the top mount IC warmed up 😂😂

    Been watching lots of your vids, truly great content, thx for all the work! I kept my first new car (2004 a3 8p 1.9 tdi bkc engine) and intend to keep it as long as possible, always knew about the great potential of remapping but shied away from any kind of tune coz of the possible impact of more wear and the difficulty to find a garage doing such things that you can really trust. Only got two gripes with this engine, it lacks a 6th gear coz the revs on the Autobahn are simply too high for my liking (my cruising speed commonly is between 160-180 km/h and then it revs at 3200-3400rpm, the other thing is the fairly big turbo lag when driving off (car is heavy and feels even heavier then). Loved the power delivery of the 2.0 tdi 140 with PD and almost bought this one instead but given the plethora of issues this engine had, I m glad I settled for the well trusted 1.9tdi.

    It's difficult to find tuners once your car is past a certain age/mileage, most of them won't want to take it on or they will suggest costly upgrades that you don't really need

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Před rokem +2

      That is so true unfortunately but there are still many decent garages out there happy to do the work on any car that passes their basic reliability checks. It just means you have to look harder.

      Darkside Developments, they done all 3 of my cars now. Still running my A3, 183,000 miles and still going strong, no injector problems, have blown a turbo at 145,000 though but pulls like a train, MPG is thru the roof, 68 mpg at 70mph.
      Also bear in mind, it takes 80,000 miles to run a diesel in, if its gonna fail it WILL fail well before then, if you got 80k or more, you got a proven head and block and they will take whatever you wanna throw on them.
      Stock 138 Bhp from the factory, now running (last dyno'd at turbo failure), 186.2 Bhp and 395 Ft Lbs.

    I'd say if your driving a VW DTI with a factory tune your driving in granny mode. A conservative remap will bring the engine to what it really should be from factory. A bit of pep and no hesitation off the mark. But then it would be more like an audi. Indeed the tune may be the only difference.

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Před rokem +3

      lol I like that expression, Granny mode, it fits really well. People who get a remap done wonder why they didn't do it sooner, it really is a night and day difference isn't it.

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Před rokem +1

      You can focus on low to mid range torque, and not push the gearbox to cope with a large peak increase which is typically where any problems lie. A good remap company who understands the car can set the output to give you a bit more power, better economy and not stress the turbo or gearbox.

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Před 8 měsíci

      Do you mean half the hp or add half the HP on top of what you've got? Both are often achievable (but not at the same time obviously!). halving power will reduce engine efficiency so there is probably a sweet spot, overall though putting a dip in mid to top end torque will improve reliability, and upping the boost slightly at the low end will help spool up response, but if done too much you'll put strain on the turbo.

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Před rokem +1

      These engines tend to need a few hundred miles to re trim everything after major changes which is why it might seem down on power. Bear in mind the engine is quite different now with these new parts.
      A remap is the most highly recommended mod, it will transform your engine and is probably one of the easiest upgrades out there.

      You shouldn't have a problem quite a few of our members have had this done with this transmission and have been pleased with the results. Choose a mapper who knows the car and gearbox well though, and don't push everything to the max. A decent economy oriented map should put you in a decent power zone with minimal extra stress on the gearbox and drivetrain components.

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Před rokem +1

      It depends on the mapper, and most maps can be optimized for both. Most drivers even with performance maps will see better fuel economy, if you drive the same you hit the higher power figures at lower RPM's.
      A point to note is that remapping doesn't always add more fuel, often the duration and timing of the fuel injection will make the engine more efficient. The increased efficiency means more power from less fuel and less heat lost in frictional losses typical of higher RPM driving.
      If you car is now making 100hp at 3000rpm rather than at 4000rpm you need less throttle and hence will use less fuel to achieve the same rate of travel and acceleration.
