ICJ is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations (UN). South Africa asked for an emergency order calling on Israel to suspend its military campaign, which it launched after an attack by Hamas-led Palestinian fighters on 7 October, which killed 1,140 people, according to Israeli officials.
The state filed the lawsuit at the end of December, citing statements made by Israeli public officials and the actions of its military.
It is the first time Israel is being tried under the United Nations’ Genocide Convention, which was drawn up after the Second World War in light of the atrocities committed against Jews and other persecuted minorities during the Holocaust.

Bravo, a very compelling case presented by South Africa. The presentations on conduct, intent and urgency were crystal clear. They also neatly pre-empted and diffused Israel's ultra weak "self-defense" argument. Israel has no defense here and tomorrow will capitulate and utilize shock and awe pics/videos during their 3 hours in a lame attempt to win world public support rather than present a defense of any legal merit. We can only pray the 17 individual ICJ judges get this right - after all international justice itself is on trial. Some of the 15 represented countries have separate genocide issues of their own so the fear is that individual politics will win instead of justice. I pray South Africa wins and ALL those responsible for Gaza war crimes are held to account.
