I Tried ChatGPT's Top NYC Restaurant: Mamoun's Falafel - Worth the Hype?

  • ChatGPT has taken the world by storm the last several months. What is ChatGPT? The ChatGPT AI language model, basically a chatbot, that provides information for you based on all the information on the internet. That is more or less what the ChatGPT app is, although this video is not a ChatGPT tutorial or a ChatGPT explained video. In this video, we use ChatGPT to recommend us some NYC cheap restaurants.
At first glance, the restaurants that ChatGPT recommended to us were not very impressive. the first three recommendations were Joe's Pizza, The Halal Guys, and Xi'an Famous Foods. Out of those three I would say only Xi'an Famous Foods is a truly great NYC cheap eat. The fourth recommendation for NYC cheap food though was Mamoun's Falafel. I had heard of Mamoun's before but I had never gotten around to trying it. There are many people who swear by it as the best street food in NYC, and praise Mamoun's falafel recipe, the Mamoun's falafel hot sauce, and the Mamoun's schawarma. There are also others who say Mamoun's is overrated and no longer a great restaurant at this point compared to when it opened 50 years ago.
We'll find out the truth here! We're putting ChatGPT's algorithm to the test and seeing if ChatGPT food recommendations can be trusted.

The best Falafe I ever had was served in 1960 on the waterfront in Hifah on
My on day off from working on the Kibbutz-it cost about $.50 cents with an orange soda.
I would do a free three hour Eged bus from Kibbutz Sasa just to eat it at least once a month!
I have never had a any Falafel that was close to neaross good!
Sometimes it is just in the eye of the beholder-i was a 17 year old kid from San Francusco, spending a year on a kibbutz by myself- I have been looking for that street vendor flavor for over 60 years and have never found it again!

I’d give that place a 2nd try for other more popular dishes you saw being ordered. And perhaps depending on the time of day, the falafel maybe prepared earlier (like for lunch, not dinner or supper), served hot/warm. You can then request the sauce to be put inside & not over sauced. Just a thought…I enjoy your honest reviews. Not a NewYorker but in SF Bay Area (Calif)…a foodie too!

In the late 70's I used to go to Mamoun's with friends after a late night out. Last time I went was several years ago. It was still cheap, fast, good-sized, and delicious, just like it was back in the day. Looks like they've gotten a bit less generous with the falafel in the sandwich. Oh well, the place still has sentimental value to me. On the plus side, I didn't remember them having lentil soup. Something to try someday.
P.S. Hope you feel better soon.

  • @2Wheels_NYC

Where to begin here... The initial AI selection was definitely all high end. I had the pleasure of dining at Per Se once, and Eric Ripert is one of my icons. Le Bernardin is the best seafood restaurant in NYC, dare I say the USA. Eleven Madison Park I'll never step foot in now that they are vegan, I wish I experienced it under Danny Meyer's command. And, you know I agree with you about Lugers.
Second AI choices. Not bad. I haven't been to Mamoun's post covid (most places have most definitely changed). But, going back, I've been Downtown, and the one in New Haven. It was always excellent. Sorry it didn't live up to the hype. But, I can attest it was very good going back the last 2 decades. The Halal Truck by me in Flushing makes great falafel, so I never travel far for it. Out of curiosity, I actually did a ChatGPT search for best restaurants by me, and it was a decent result. As long as it doesn't turn into Skynet we're good. Sorry I'm chatty tonight... But thank you for another great review!

    • @uaeats

Whenever I’m in the city I go to mamouns! I have been going since I was a kid. First off, who the f--- goes there for soup? You go for falafel and you go for shawarma. You get a shawarma in pita and you get a side order of falafel. If you are going to get a falafel sandwich, you don’t squash it flat (it looked like you sat on it) and you don’t eat falafel 30 minutes after you have gotten it from the place. You get the falafel and you eat it! 🤷‍♂️

    Advice for Mamoun’s:
Stick to the lamb shawarma and only get it if they’re shaving it fresh off the spit (which is sadly rarer and rarer there nowadays, they reheat proteins A LOT).
However, if you get there when it’s fresh, their lamb is amazing.

The thing about Mamouns is that it used to only cost $2, was open all night, and is right next to NYU and a million bars. For college kid lunch or drunk food, it really didn't get any better
If the quality has gone down as prices have gone up, that's a shame but not super surprising.

Gypsy Grill in Jersey City makes some of the best falafel I've ever had. I've had Mamoun's now and then when I need a cheap quick meal over the past 10 years and it's always been mediocre. It's kind of like the Starbucks of falafel to me, consistently mid across several locations and often the only option in smaller towns, but if you have access to multiple options it rates below average. The sauce is always too much and the falafel is dry and pretty flavorless while the veg often tastes old and wilted. I think a lot of tourists or people who've never had falafel try it and think it's pretty great for $6, but there are SO many better places in NYC.

You don’t know how to eat a falafel sandwich !!
You should eat it right away…while it’s hot!
