    Your 2 returns coming out of the wall, that you put elbows on and submerged into the water........... If you want to get more aeration, you can change the elbows for T pieces, And submerge your pipe as you have it now into the water, But add a small length of Pipe into the other end of the T piece going vertical ( opposite way to your submerged pipes ) and it turns the submerged pipes into like a venturi , blasting it under the water. Something to do with the pressure makes it do it, I see this done at a local koi shop near me, Very simple way to aerate your pond even more if you wanted. Just play around with the actual length of the vertical pipe, the more length equals more pressure equalling more bubbles i think lol

      @Wrighty  Před 4 lety

      Hi mate, thanks for the tip, very much appreciated. The reason for the 90 elbows and pipe into the water is that I don't like loud splashing water. I find it's not relaxing, and the two pipes do make quite a lot of noise. I will keep this in mind though. Thanks again for the tip. Terry.

    Hi Terry I enjoy your video's very much, the best thing I found for blanket weed and algae was a cyprio in line magnet. I had one on my pond 20 years ago, I to had loads of problems with algae and I put one of these magnets on and it made no difference at all to start with but the following years no blanket weed or algae amazing. The pond had to go when we had our son, but now he's grown up I have a new pond with loads of blanket weed and its took over a year to get one of these cyprio magnets and just by chance I found one on ebay it had nether been used just sat in its box in a garage for years, got it for £7.50 I could not believe my luck, you just can't get them anymore. I read on many articles on koi forums and so many people dismiss them but I know they work, just need time. If you can get one I promise you they work and no running costs. Thanks video's Jason

    Terry you left your address in again on the media delivery boxes lol. What is that lump in front of the dorsal fin of the big yellow koi at 2:40. What were your water parameters as you never said in the video, I'm currently going through a nitrite spike :( Water changes a plenty atm

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Simon, I can't believe I've done it again lol. The lump on the big koi is a growth. There's nothing we can do about it. I had the vet come and have another look at her last week and she said they can cut it out and stitch it, but it might not heal and that would be the end of her. So we decided to leave it. My water tests come out at Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, PH 8, but nitrate this week was 50mg. So I've had to do some water changes. I'm hoping this trickle filter will help. That's why I'm doing daily water checks. I also want to get some plants in the pond but it's getting a bit late in the season. Thanks mate, Terry.

    Q: I am trying to figure out why you are using granite as a medium? Are you using it for the mineral content? Or something else? With Natural rock or lava rock I would be worried about any type of infestation that has cyst in it, it would be hard to treat and get every cranny. I am probably totally wrong here, but that is my thinking.
    Whatever medium you are using in your Trickle Filter & Moving Bed Filter will take care of the Stage 2 (Ammonia to Nitrite) of the Nitrogen Cycle (the Nitrosomonas Bacteria loves lots of Oxygen { O2 } ).
    But What part of your system is taking care of Stage 3 (Nitrite to Nitrate) (In this stage Oxygen will kill the Nitrobacter Bacteria)??
    If I remember right, your suppose to keep the O2 out of this part of the Nitrobacter Bacteria cycle. You normally have to take the water from the pond/tank (or were the mount of O2 is the lowest) and run it into the dedicated Stage 3 (Nitrite to Nitrate) filter. I have seen people use a 3 plus feet tall 4 inch diameter pipe with your favorite medium inside for this stage but that is for 100 -- 300 +/- 50 gallon tank. In salt water tanks they take the water from your main solids filter and run it over this medium directly without aeration for this stage. What little air in that water will turn the top 2-4 inches green of your medium (if it is exposed to light), but everything under that will be a different color. Oh the stage 3 bacteria does not like direct sunlight either. Also, If I remember right you don't need a lot of water running through this filter. It is truly a trickle filter. To beat the dead horse again, just make sure air cant get back through the return of this part of the filter. Oh one fun fact about this stage- it takes a while for the bacteria to establish. Mainly because it takes enough Nitrite to start it which relies on Stage Two part of the Cycle. It has been known that you can jump start this cycle by adding gravel from an established filter/undergravel plate, just make sure there little AIR in the bag you carry it in and dump it into your new filter.
    As I have pointed out I ran a 240 gallon freshwater tank with 6 6inch Tinfoil Barbs, 12 pictus catfish and a number of other fish for over 10 years. And I used DIY undergravel plates in that tank, with about 4-6 inches of gravel over the plastic screen which sat on the undergravel plates. I had one heck of an aeration system for this tank along with my 5 other tanks in my fish room (none of this 1/4 inch tubing running long runs- which would kill your air pumps. I ran 1 inch PVC for my main air runs, then 1/4 inch short runs to the air stones)).
    And for the record I am OK with the Acrylic covered gravel. It does not cause complication when treating sick fish.

      @Veterankoi Před 6 lety +1

      I introduced Wrighty's pro filter system to my pond earlier this year. However, I read about problems with nitrite/nitrate with K1. Therefore, I decided to make the outlet from the moving bed direct the flow through a gravel bog (about 4 bags of washed pea gravel) with water plants on the top. The water rises from the bottom of the gravel to the top and flows over a waterfall back in to the pond. The idea being the plants could feed off the nitrate that is produced from the nitrite/nitrate cycle. As you stated the only problem I have is with algae growth at the top of the gravel competing with plants.
      The bog filter has only been in operation properly since the end of June, therefore the nitrite/nitrate cycle only recently started a couple of weeks ago. Therefore, I still have traces of nitrite and nitrate when I carry out water tests. Ammonia is zero. Hopefully by this time next year I will see if it is going to be fully successful or not.

      @Wrighty  Před 6 lety

      Hi Royston, I'm not sure where you got 3w from as my UV is 30w. I always oversize with a UV on my pond. The one I have is big enough to service a 6000 gallon pond and my pond is 2500 gallon, so it's well over sized. @Wrighty  Před rokem +1

      Hi Ray, the pond returns were originally going to be dropping from the wall into the pond, but as you may know, I don't like crashing water, and as there were two of them, it was quite loud, so I piped them down to the pond. Having them piped down to the water, actually puts a syphon effect on the returning water and lowers the level. Hope this helps mate, Terry.
