  • The line opened in 1866 between Edge Hill and Canada Dock. Passenger trains ran on the line to Canada Dock from 1870. The initial stations were: Canada Dock, Walton & Anfield, Breck Road, Tue Brook, Stanley and Edge Lane. On 5 September 1881 a sub-branch to Alexandra Dock was opened from the main branch at Atlantic Junction. The branch was in a cutting to the south west of Kirkdale Station. This added the Alexandra Dock and Bootle Balliol Road stations to the line. A further station as added in 1882 at County Road named Spellow. On 1 May 1886 a junction with the Liverpool, Crosby and Southport Railway was opened from the Alexandra Branch.
By 31 May 1948 all the passenger stations on the line closed. The line continued to be used by regular Southport to Liverpool Lime Street services, which operated primarily to provide a convenient Southport connection to long haul mainline trains. The service was withdrawn in October 1977.

This is one if the few lines i did manage to travel on before regular services were discontinued. Early 1977 .they used classic DMUs. For the regular service. Lime street to edge Hill, then fast to Bootle. Then stopping to Southport.

It`s all changed down the dock`s now. It`s double lined in and out and the rear view as it was departing the docks has a big new warehouse facility on the right complete with loading Bays. There are plans to open Regent Road back to Road Traffic again, but when I don`t know.

@@modernista6056 Hi, are you talking about the one that ran down to The Aintree Freifghtliner Depot? if it is I think you can still walk part of it. There is a guy on here who did quite an extensive Video on it. The only other one I know of is the one we saw here, which comes out at Regent road crossing.

Does anybody recall/ have info on the old goods line to Langton dock from aintree, ran behind Walton jail, through to the 'half miley' tunnel that ran down past gas works( exited were Lidl is now, marsh lane/Stanley rd) into a cutting at side of police station and under present Bootle strand (were Asda is now) in a deep cutting then into another tunnel by old muncaster pub on irlam road,....where did that tunnel exit, what was the route from that muncaster portal and where did it exit for its arrival at the Langton dock goods yard?? I've heard it said the tunnel portal was inside a warehouse somwere around bottom end of strand road/ derby road....anybody know, or got info, pics of this?? Thanks. We use to walk all those disused lines n tunnels, ones under the flyover by rice lane to kirkdale, first tunnel had a passage in side leading to a cavern which had a little tunnel in corner which led to a ladder going upwards, that comes out into a manhole in the raised section of the subway/flyover roundabout....never figured out why though....any ideas..... love to know we're portal of the muncaster/ irlam rs tunnel came out though at dock end. Thanks.
