Gen 6 Celica Convertible Top Motor Repair

  • Is the convertible top on your Celica going up and down unevenly?
    The most likely cause is a broken tension pin in one or the other electric motors in the mechanism.
    This video will show you just how easy they are to replace. Note: The tension pins are actually 2.5mm x 20mm not 2.5 x 10 as in the video. Have to confess to fat fingers during editing.

    Great video. I just repaired the motors on my 98 Celica. I ended up using a 3/32 punch and 3/32 roll pins. Worked great. Thanks

      @@stevedarnley The length of time they last seems to depend on how many times I operate the top. As a guide I find I need to replace them about twice a year. My car is my daily driver and during the warmer months the top is down quite regularly. I am unaware if there are stronger tension pins out there but suspect if there was they might defeat the purpose.

      Yes it certainly will work with your '97. It is the same for all Generation 6 Celica's but could also work for Generation 5. If the hood is not opening all the way check all the joints in the frame and make sure none of them are jamming.

    Do you know how to fix the rear window getting stuck on the back seat? Because when I put my top down the back window goes onto the back seat and doest go down all the way.

    • @kieranmcgoverin1727
      @kieranmcgoverin1727  Před 2 lety +2

      There are two possibilitied that I can think of. One is that if you have had a new hood fitted that that window is too high in the fabric. The other is that the rear of the seat is too far back or the trim that has the velcro strip attached is too proud and the top of the window is catching it on the way down. Check that the trim is hard against the rear of the seat and that the velcroe is not too thick.

      Not too sure about that. I haven't had to do that. I have had to remove the windows to replace rollers and there is a video on You Tube that shows you how to do that. This is the link to it, czcams.com/video/Aon-RMt8kZk/video.html Hope that helps.

      Did you check the tension pins? This is the most common problem. If the motors are working sometimes the pins might look ok but are not. Replace them both and see what happens.

      Not sure just what could be causing that. However, check each of the joints in the frame to ensure there are no obstructions preventing movement. Also check the stops to see if they need adjusting.

    • @kieranmcgoverin1727
      @kieranmcgoverin1727  Před rokem

      If it is not electrical, ie the switch in the centre console or the motors it could be somewhere in the actual mechanism causing it to jam. Check that the framework is not twisted. This can happen when one of the motors on either side breaks. If you use the switch in the trunk to turn it to manual operation, does it go up and down Ok? Also does it operate correctly if you pull the hood away from the top of the windscreen a bit to get it started?

      @@kieranmcgoverin1727 Thank you for your reply. All I did today was checked the motor on one side for a broken tension pin, and with the motor apart I tried using the switch to see if it turns. It didn't. But what you said in your reply, I didn't know. You said that the switch in the boot is used for the motors, so that might be off as I haven't checked. Hopefully it's that simple. I have just recently bought this car, so still learning about it.

      @kieranmcgoverin1727  Před 2 lety +2

      @@michaelgoldman6314 There are a number of things that could be causing that. Is there power to the motors? Are the switches in the centre console working? I had to replace both switches in mine several years ago. If there is power and the motors are working or trying to the mechanism could be jamming. I also had that and had to get two new nylon rollers manufactured to replace two broken ones. If you don't have the expertise to do the repairs yourself try your favourite panel shop to start with. I got frustrated trying to align both front and rear windows, gave up and got my local panel shop on the job. Took them a couple of hours but they are now perfectly aligned. If the mechanism is ok I would suggest you get your auto electrician to check out the electrics. As far as upgrading the engine is concerned any motor mechanic worth his salt should be able to help with that.

      Best of luck with that if you have big hands. It is a total pain in the A$$. Word of advice...if the window motors died, it was likely because the track system for the windows failed. Those are pretty tough to find anywhere but your local Toyota dealer might be able to help.
