    I like it when you review headphones under $1000. I would like to see a video going into the differences between power from amps and gain and volume. Also, maybe you could do a mini series on the ideal setup at certain price points and for certain uses. Keep up the excellent work. This channel is great.

    I have the elex it's fantastic.
    I use it with RME dac 2.
    It's just phenomenal how fast the drivers are these headphones they have similar resolving abilities to utopia but a bit slower, I wouldn't notice a difference myself, except when I compared both headphones at my friends place next to a giant amp, and still the difference wasn't huge.

    This review comes at at opportune time. I've been planning to get a headphone upgrade (ATM I mostly use the Senheiser HD700, the HD6XX a fair amount and the Hifiman 400i once in a blue moon) before the end of the year (I'm retired on a fixed income, so need to plan and save up). I've been considering the similarly priced MrSpeakers Aeon Flow Open, the Audeze LCD2 Classic and the Elex. I've already been leaning to the Elex and this review pretty much clinches it. Assuming it remains available on MD with next day shipping, I will probably buy them next week (when I get my Social Security payment LOL). I'll be using them with the Schiit Modi Multibit (whose somewhat dark leaning should well complement the bright Elex) and the MD CTH. But once I get new cans, I start saving up for the Monoprice Liquid Platinum, which should be my amp endgame; early reviews indicate that this $699 amp is very close to the $3000 Liquid Crimson upon which it is based..

    I have these and an Elear. The Elex is the more refined, detailed headphone, but Elear with Tru-fi is a pretty close 2nd with more bass and the dip in the mids was improved. Both handily beat the HD650/6xx in everything but comfort due to weight.

  • @resonantevol

    Based on your video and other tidbits I've grabbed, I think I am going to make these my next purchase. I was considering these headphones after being burnt by a disappointing Sennheiser purchase despite overwhelming positive reviews of "amazing sound quality" and I guess they would be if you had used Skull Candy your whole life. I have have been aware of Focal in car audio for many years (where I started my voyage as an audiophile) and I have been very satisfied with the Focal Sphear earbuds I purchased for only $50. I would be curious to know if these are still your daily drivers and if you had any amp/dac recommendations for them. I have a Yamaha RX-V2035 that powers my home audio, but I think the headphone output is probably too little and the other outputs far too much. My only reservation with this purchase would be that the last time I tried a pair of open air headphones I hated them (~10 years ago?). The bass evaporated. They were Audio-Technica, probably around $150, but I don't remember the model number.

I have to agree that the Elex’s have more “punch” and are definitely not neutral, but I gotta admit that good engineering (Brian Culbertson, Melody Gardot, Dire Straits) make these cans shine...I’ll reserve final judgement for a while, but so far these are keepers.

    Sorry, just one more thing I wanted to add. I think Campfire Andromeda still has the best mids and highs I've heard. Better than Elex and Clear and HD6xx series to my ears. The treble smoothness on the Andros is like that of the HD6xx series, but with the speed and resolution closer to the Focals. Also, vocals sound just right to me on the Andros. Just the most natural I've heard. The soundstage on the Andromeda is also the best I've heard from any headphones and actually did remind me of listening to good nearfield monitors properly set up. Too bad I sold the Andro to get the Clear. I kinda regret it, but I did find the bass on the Andromeda to be not that great. That's the reason I sold them. It lacks definition to my ears.

    Quick question : I am really torn between the Elex and the Lcd2c, but I am leaning more towards the Elex, because from all of the many, many reviews I've read of both (too many lol) they seem to be more of a great all-rounder rather than a genre master, which is what I'm looking for, since I listen to all kinds of music. BUT, I am somewhat treble sensitive, and the hd6xx is about as much treble presence as I want. Will the Elex be too fatiguing to my ears if I enjoy the treble of the 6xx?

I am finding that they are a bit dull at the moment (I wanted more wow out of them) but they only have a few hours on them and only being powered by a FIIO E17 (original one). Still waiting the the Audio-gd R2R 11 to arrive and that will likely help. but wanted to find out if you had a particular cable that might bring out the pizaz a bit more....you have a favorite? you like silver cables? Thanks!

    • @Bearricaded
      @Bearricaded Před 5 lety +1

      Unsurprisingly, the best headphone cable you're going to find is the Monoprice one: www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=29515
      Cable material: 8 cores*0.65mm(7*0.1mm)4+4 Hybrid Silver plated 4N OCC copper wire Cable
      Spec-wise, these are incredibly low capacitance, microphonic immune, low resistance, excellent soldering quality (I own 4 of these), and you can scrunch them into a ball and put them in your pocket.
      They're also incredibly beautiful and I can't help but run my fingers down them (with no introduced noise/microphonics!) all the time while wearing them.
      Should you decide to make the move to balanced later on, you can simply cut the 3.5mm connector off and solder a Neutrik XLR-4 on.
      It's 30 bucks. And arguably better in EVERY way than any of these cables being sold for $250.
      I just keep buying them and soldering different connectors depending on the input of which headphone I'm currently enjoying.

    It's funny how DMS' opinion on the Elear took a 180 degree with just a pad change. :D Which is basically what Elex is - an Elear with different pads. I owned the Elear too and did find them a bit weird sounding in the highs. However, the Elex still sounds a little weird to me in the highs, just a lot less so than the Elear did. But some unevenness in treble is still there with the Elex. Highs are somewhat smoother on the Clear, but HD6xx series are still superior in this regard.

      The 6xx has a veil and sound muffled if you don't noticed that the clears and elex sound more dynamic and clearer and the treble is smooth I don't know what you are listening too I own the clears and the hd600 hd6xx hd579 love them all but the clears have more detail in the mids and slaps with with more instruments can't compare Apple's to oranges the focal clears are far superior to the hd600 line

    • @vm6038
      @vm6038 Před 5 lety +8

      Come on, there's no need to be offensive. I just wanted to share my personal experience with the headphones. I am actually not biased at all towards any brand. I actually strongly dislike the HD800 - I think Sennheiser messed up designing that one with the flawed tonal balance it has. I sold it without regrets and will take the Focals over it any day. So I am not a Sennheiser fanboy. Also, I think being a fanboy implies blindly believing that something is superior without justification. However, there are indeed very good objective reasons to love the HD6xx series. They simply measure great. Very even tonal balance, fast decay, lower distortion than most other cans in the mids and highs... I love the sound of the HD6XX in particular. I think HD600 is somewhat flawed in its balance because it has too much emphasis on the upper mids and not quite enough bass. HD6XX is indeed a little dark, but just a little. I don't find it veiled personally, although the bass isn't particularly great. There are many cans with better bass than the HD6xx series for sure. Mids and highs is where the Sennheisers truly shine. Actually, the Clear and Elex have a similar tonality to the HD6XX/650 - warm and full with focus on mid bass and a fairly relaxed treble, but much better bass quality than the HD6xx line. I actually think the upper highs are brighter on the HD6XX vs the Focals. Lower highs are similar. At least that's how I hear them.

    • @vm6038
      @vm6038 Před 5 lety +2

      Also, check my other comment here. I do love the Elex and Clear and rate them as overall better than the HD6xx series. There's no doubt than the Focals are technically superior in many ways. The bass and mids go to the Focals no doubt. I think the bass is revolutionary on the Focals for dynamic drivers. I've never heard any other open dynamics that can match them in overall low end quality. Speed and clarity go to the Focals by a good margin. Soundstage is quite small on the Focals though. I prefer HD6xx soundstage which is more spread out, less in your face, but that's personal preference I guess. Also, yes the treble does sound smoother to me on the HD6xx line. Overall, I do think that taking into account the law of diminishing returns, the Focals are not a huge step up. They are better, but I think those who stick with the HD6xx cans won't miss out much. For me personally, the HD6xx line is the sweet spot for hi-fi cans - it's a big step up from lower end cans and fairly close to modern flagship performance without breaking the bank.

    I also have the HD6XX and HD600. The Elex and Clear are both darker than HD600 to my ears and fuller sounding. Both Focals sound close to the HD6XX is signature. However, I find the HD6xx series to have noticeably smoother, more even highs. More silky if you will. The Focals sound a little rough and metallic in comparison. In terms of transients and clarity, the Focals are significantly better than the HD6xx series however.
    I don't find the soundstage on the Focals at all impressive. They sound quite in your face IMO. Imaging is decent on the Focals I guess, but I think people tend to exaggerate imaging qualities of headphones. The truth is that headphones have very little in the way of stereo imaging compared to any decent, well set up speakers.

    As far as an amplifier, maybe try a THX AAA 789 from Massdrop, they're on one day shipping right now. I'm super curious about those Focals with that thing. I'm actually really surprised you liked the Focals that much. The treble in Focals has always been a bit harsh for me. I had written them off, but I'm going to have to add them to my list to try again. I haven't really liked a Focal, but it seems like these may be "different" from the rest, which could be a good thing. Thoughts on these vs. LCDX?
    UPDATED: I just got a loxjie p20, which really sounds amazing with the 650's for some reason (when run balanced), so if you think the Elex's are upgrades over 650's, then this might be a great option... and its CHEAP AF!
