This movie is mostly a tribute to Western movies, the scale of Jake, the rattlesnake and the bird were big to imply the threat but also made the town people look small and humble. Throughout the movie, Rango mostly looked small against his enemy or even against the Spirit of the West, showed size doesn't matter, it's not who he is but the deeds that made him a hero.

Jake does make an interesting point with his ending dialogue.
Neither of them really can exist without the other. The bad guy in all the old Westerns need their cowboy sheriffs to oppose them, and vice versa. It doesn't really work without that dynamic, so when Rango proves that he is indeed Jake's equal...they tip their hats at each other in respect and move on.
True, they may be just legends someday, but they will be remembered. That's more than can be said about the mayor..
FUN FACT: The idea of a lake going dry to fuel a city is almost exactly what happened with the California Aqueduct. Back in the past LA (I think) had a water shortage so people set out to find water. They found a lake and eventually they built the aqueduct to bring that water back to the city. Unfortunately, this ended up either severely drying out the lake or just completely depleting it.
Very interesting to see how the real world can leak into the stories we tell.

Agreed, the animation style here is incredibly unique and for the most part I think it works here. It helps establish the bleak/darker tone of the film and makes it stand out. Also, yeah, Rattlesnake Jake was a badass design for a character.
Right, it’s stylized but not over the top cartoon, so it adds to that maturity.
The only place I don't think it works is the human characters
i realy just love how rango is a personification of johnny himself... johnny is extremly shy even tough he can act tough and witty, he is in essense a humble person who doesnt like the spotlight, and yet, he goes out of his way to help others, be that kids at a hospital, or just an autistic kid that is scared in the middle of a crowd... he might not have been born to be a hero, but he sure as hell does his best to be one for those who need.
I love Johnny and I didn’t even think of him playing himself here 🥹
@@RhetoricalThrill he was extremly envolved in the writing of the movie, and he indeed made rango to be a personification of himself, also if you ever have the time, watch the making off, the whole crew say they loved johnny and many of the jokes he made didnt even cut to the movie, they acted the whole movie in live action as well! so like, all the scenes that they acted could have been put together into a live action movie if they ever wanted to XD

Such an underrated movie. I enjoy it, kinda like Fantastic Mr. Fox, not entirely a kids movie but it works.

This film was animated by Industrial Light and Magic. They're first full-length feature as in not VFX. The Star Wars animators made a bloody movie, and it makes me so happy XD
The making of this movie was pretty interesting. My favorite thing was that they actually used motion-capture on the actors for some parts. They weren't just in a booth recording their dialogue, they were acting out the scenes and interacting with one another. I don't think I've heard of them doing that in any other animated film before.
Oh that’s interesting! Usually the actors record alone, sometimes they’ll have them together but they just sit around to record.
Y'know, it's funny. For a long time I didn't really care for westerns as a rule, but the older I get, the more I appreciate them.
I feel that. It’s like the themes become more relevant as I get older.

I would like to note that the characters being justified via what animals they are is actually present, think about it Rango doesn’t know who he is, and he’s a camouflaging lizard that changes to fit its environment, I always love that choice especially

Rango is a visual feast for the eyes! The animation is stunning and the story is surprisingly deep. Loved the nods to classic Westerns and the quirky humor. A true hidden gem in animation!

Clearly an animated film for adults. They reference movies like Chinatown and Apocalypse Now. Movies that no child has business seeing. Also, this is the first, and only as far as I know, animated feature film that was made by the special effects company Industrial Light and Magic (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, etc).

the animation to me felt exagarrated to a point , it feel to me it was done to deliver a certain archtype -> the DENGEROUS gunslinger , the OLD prospect/bandit. the very indian indian :) ....
btw i heard the spirit of the west wasnt only modeled after Eastwood but the he was approached to voice act it but he refused.
the snake gave me Lee Van Cliff from The Good The Bad and The Ugly (the bad) wive .

Well, I think getting Timothy Olyphant to do a bit of an Eastwood impression was the next best thing. If anyone could be considered Eastwood's successor, I think it might be him. Deadwood, Justified, even his role in Mandalorian make him a bit of an icon. I love the choice of having him voice this character.

Michigander, actually 😊 Dark City I want to do at some point, it’s one my husband loves but I don’t know anything about. Hudson Hawk has Bruce Willis, right? I’d definitely consider it. I’d like to do more horror but so far they have performed dismally for me 😅

@@RhetoricalThrill Hudson Hawk is pretty terrible, but very entertaining to me. It doesn't take itself very seriously and is pretty tongue in cheek. I think a lot of people didn't like it because they were used to Bruce Willis in Die Hard and wanted this movie to be more like those.

A lot of people tend to either gloss over things, focus on other things, or put all their effort into trying to write a smartass comment because everybody and their goat-fuckin’ brother thinks they’re witty. (Feel free to steal the “everybody and their goat-fuckin’ brother” thing. It’s my twist on an old expression, and something tells me you’d enjoy it.) Doesn’t mean you missed. Hell, in this case, I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people didn’t even get it. This is the internet, after all-it’s not exactly a realm known for intelligence. Rest assured that at least some of us got the joke and got a kick out of it, though.
