    Hi Drew and Brian.
I'm fairly new to the Fountain Pen thing. I got into it by journaling for my mental health. I never knew I could cope with two blokes casually extemporising in superfluously tangential ways bringing in extraneous and informal information about pens, paper and ink amongst others, for two hours at a time. But somehow the time flies by. You have such a warm, welcoming show that is highly entertaining, has a great feeling of community and keeps a smile on my face. It feels like you are my friends.
I was watching a show from a while back (Ep 53) where you were talking about neurodivergence within the pen community. When Drew started talking about serial hobbies, hyper-focus, dart-focus, deep diving in to subjects my jaw basically hit the floor. I thought you were walking about in my head. Turns out I have some strong ADHD traits I didn't know about. I can't thank you enough because it has helped to change the whole direction of my psychotherapy treatment, and for the better. Thank you so much.
    Cheers
Dave (an inveterate cargo short wearer, even through the depths of winter, and Brit, with 12 pens, all inked up, living in a small Oxfordshire market town who, in 1984, aged 20, was at Lancashire Agricultural College, driving tractors and learning about pigs, sheep, cows and crops).

My first fountain pen was a Safari and I got a scratchy and very dry nib. It put me off fountain pens for over a year. Then I got a Eco and now I have 29 pens.

I've bought two Safaris in different sized nibs and both wrote dry. I think perhaps they don't work for me, as I have a lighter touch when I write. But Pilot Kakuno, also a steel nib, works like a dream for me so I have many. I like the TWSBI pens too, and have all the nibs, but their extra fine isn't fine enough for my everyday writing. I wish so much they had an "ultra" fine nib.

Brian forgot my favorite part about the TWSBI Eco. How well it seals. In other words, how you can let the pen sit for months and then pick it up and it will write perfectly. And with all the colors it comes in, you can always have a pen ready to go with the ink color of your choice.

      @janwilson9485 Před rokem +1

I lke Safari's but they do dry out way too quickly - I agree that the TWSBIs are far better at keeping 'wet' and its easier to adjust their nibs to get the writing experience you want. I must admit my Lamys aren't inked up often now.

Brian Goulet is the co-founder of The Goulet Pen Company, a retailer of fountain pens, ink, paper, and other writing accessories. He is also a fountain pen enthusiast and a CZcams personality who reviews and showcases various products on his channel.
According to his blog post1, his top 3 everyday carry pens as of May 2023 are:
LAMY 2000: A durable and reliable pen with a brushed texture and a satisfying click on the cap. He prefers a fine nib on this pen.
TWSBI 580ALR Prussian Blue: An affordable and demonstrator pen with a great ink capacity and a fine nib. He likes the color and the seal of this pen.
Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze Age: A smooth and wet writing pen with an amazing material and a great ink capacity. He has carried this pen daily for over 4 years.
He also mentions some honorable mentions in his CZcams video2, such as:
Traveler’s Company Brass Fountain Pen: A pocket pen that is easy to take anywhere and stays well-sealed. It only has a fine nib option.
Sailor King Of Pens Asian Way: A sentimental pen that he bought in Japan while celebrating Platinum’s 100th anniversary. He loves the look and the bi-color nib of this pen.
Of course, these are not the only pens that Brian Goulet likes or uses. He has reviewed and featured many other pens on his website, blog, and CZcams channel. Some of them are34:
Jinhao Sharks: A fun and inexpensive pen that comes in various colors and shapes like sharks.
Pilot Metropolitan: A classic and affordable pen that is smooth and reliable. It comes in different finishes and nib sizes.
Lamy Safari: A popular and sturdy pen that has a triangular grip and a snap cap. It comes in many colors and nib sizes.
Noodler’s Black: A bulletproof and permanent black ink that works well on most papers.
Diamine Majestic Blue: A deep and rich blue ink that has a red sheen when used on good paper.
I hope this helps you learn more about Brian Goulet’s favourite pens.😊

Whenever the topic of lifetime pens gets brought up, I always remember reading comments from german people saying their 80s Safari is intact and still writes fine. Some even say they got it serviced after decades, with Lamy doing right by them and replacing a broken part. That's very impressive considering our choices for lifetime pens are usually very expensive ones.

As someone who was already 35 in 1984, I can add some perspective to pens that last a long time. (I understand that you pretty much limit yourselves to pens that you sell, but I won’t limit myself to those). I have a number of “vintage” pens- pre 1960- some of these I did buy, but more were from the drawers of family members. The one older pen I write with a lot is a Parker 51 vacumatic from 1946. These pens do require periodic replacement of the diaphragm (sac) so might not make it as a “lifetime” pen now. I have several aeromatic Parker 51’s from the 1950’s that work fine, write beautifully and have never been repaired- the filler has held up for 70+ years! Also on the lifetime list is my Pelikan 120, bought new in 1969. Still fills fine- the piston mechanism also has lasted all this time. I would think that the current Pelikan piston filling pens would also last a very long time. The ease of unscrewing the nib for cleaning or to lubricate the piston really makes these last a long time. I do agree with the long term appeal of some of the Japanese pens and would include my Custom Impressions (18kt #10 nib) and a number of Sailors as potential lifetime pens. Thanks for pointing out, correctly, that, taken care of, these pens will last a very long time

One of the best features of the Eco not mentioned is nib sizes as it has a broad and stub option the Safari doesn't have. The Eco also is held by a couple nibmeisters who you can buy the pen and have them grind it before shipping. So the colors can also act as a key to which nib is in that Eco for custom grinds.

    For example:

Got (found in a barn) my first fountain pen the year before you guys were born... I feel old...😂
And I still have an old grey double jewel Esterbrook J. My original and still a favorite. 70+ years on the original ink sac, but now that I have more, nib might not be the original 2668 firm medium all the time. So it's definitely been a pen for life for me. (Older pour, so it's streaky, not the wavy pattern, though there's still a bit. Really incredible chatoyance.)
I had to sleep when the podcast first "aired," but I still enjoyed the entire thing. Rachel doesn't know what she's missing, not liking things longer than 2 hours.😉
About Esterbrook. I'll try to add what I've learned. Steel dip pens became mass produced in Germany in around 1850. Hit Birmingham, England shortly after, and the founder, Richard Esterbrook, took the knowledge and moved to New Jersey and became the biggest steel pen (nibs for dip pens today) in the United States. Lincoln used Esterbrook.
From what I can tell, they were the original nib units. Made themselves, in an average of 33 different choices. Their dip version Relief, the 314, was what JRR Tolkien wrote with. Kind of an oblique stub (I have a 2314, the fountain pen or Dip-Less version.)
They were used for EVERYONE for almost a century. At $1 to start in 1934, $1.50 for colors, and up to $3.50 for the J series ($38 in today's money. A far cry from the current price. 😂) Businesses used them. The United States government used them up until the Parker 45s used by JFK and LBJ.
Until the advent of cartridges, they were either dip pens or lever fill fountain pens. Like the cartridge converter pens today, basically a go-to filling system most used. But by that's time, (actually probably about the time the CH purse pens came out in the early 1950s) the plastic used was lower quality, and so they weren't as durable as the slightly older J series. THOSE guys are DURABLE! From 1934 through the run of that type of plastic, they are very hard to break. Quality suffering, the advent of the 🤬 ballpoint (only good for a coffee stirrer, IMO) signed their death warrant. They limped until the late 1960s, even dabbling with an aerometric filler, was sold to Venus (basically a company like National Pen today. Low quality, mass produced, generally sold for advertising) and Esterbrook died with a whimper in 1971.
Modern Esterbrook really needs to be more budget friendly and make their own nibs, IMO. Betting Richard Esterbrook would be spinning in his grave with their limited edition stuff. Esterbrook was originally a great middle of the road "everyman" pen only in 6 colors. No matter what some claim. Only black, grey, red (not Dubonnet like even Richard Binder claimed), green (no other fancy names either), blue, and copper. Pattern names and extra color names were never used by Esterbrook. Wasn't until the use of the lower quality plastic they had other colors and names. There's a pastel blue and a Peacock Blue in the CH ones for example.
They were kind of closer to a LAMY Safari in price and customer base than anything from the modern company.
I can go on and on about the brand. 😂

Good writer, but the triangular holder with sharp edges isn't my cup of tea. Once I got my Eco I knew I found the best budget pen out there. Excellent comfort, excellent flow, large ink capacity, and an expensive feel/aesthetic unlike Safari that feels like a toy to me. Eco is a clear winner for me.

    Fun pen battle.
I have wondered about your internal restocking and your sample sets. You may need to reset your restocking threshold on some of the inks that are part of sample sets. The longer it takes for delivery may mean your triggers for order is set at a higher number and also add a bit of a pad for inks that are part of sample sets so that the whole set is not out of stock more than in.
If you can report on the inks in a set that is keeping the set out of stock, you may find the answer to resetting you restocking triggers.

I enjoy the shootouts and I have an idea for a future one. How about staying in the same brand and argue between two similar specification pens on the basis of the pens themselves, but NOT their cost. I have in mind a battle between the (standard non AL/ALR model) TWSBI Diamond 580 and the Vac-700R (standard, non Iris). Alternatively the standard Diamond Mini versus the Vac Mini. By sticking with the entry level pens rather than special editions or enhanced trim options, and by keeping the purchase price of the pen and its accessories out of the evaluation, I think you'd be able to let each pen speak to its own visual, mechanical and operational qualities. These are the attributes that the owner will have long after the purchase itself has been made. So, maybe, to assess what each pen is like to actually live with. Discussing separately available nib units would be appropriate to consider, but from the perspective of the hardware itself; their availability, ease of acquisition, breadth of choice, ease of installation and maintenance, for instance.
I have several of each so I'm fairly familiar with the basics, but there could be viewers or listeners out here that don't encounter these lesser-known pens as much as the headline grabbers.
