      I bought a vintage all metal pen with the sticker still on. I'm a "remove the dang sticker" girl. Took this one off & the metal body was discoloured where the sticker had been! Have tried everything to remove/polish out the discolouration but it's still there! Perhaps this is one for Brian to dive into as to the chemistry causing this reaction, lol! Love you guys! x

    Hi there, artist here, on the topic of Orange, it's an extremely narrow part of the spectrum subjectively. Unlike blues which are a fairly wide part of the spectrum in what folks would recognize as 'blue' or 'a blue', orange can easily veer into copper, terracotta, peach, salmon, coral, or directly into pinks, reds, and yellows. When it comes to ink, Sailor Kin-Mokusei is my current go to as it's very rich, shades nicely, and has a reddish sheen. Iroshizuku Yu-yake also works, though it has a slightly more pink tone to it. Hope this helps!

    I haven’t gotten through the whole pencast yet but I just had to comment about the heartwarming feeling i got from hearing you both talk about your auto biography titles. The love and respect you have for each other is one of the main reasons I watch. It speaks volumes to the type of humans you are and it’s really encouraging to know that there are business owners that TRULY care about their employees. When you’re ready for the biopic, hit me up, I’ll make it happen. 🎬 Thanks for keeping it real Brian and Drew💜

    • @j.s.matlock1456
      @j.s.matlock1456 Před rokem +5

      Actually, the "wetness" of water depends on its surface tension. Surface tension is what causes water to "bead up" on a surface. To make water really "wet" requires the addition of a surfactant to decrease the surface tension of a liquid and cause it to spread out. It's the same stuff in your dishwasher and in the car wash that gives you the spot free rinse. So, relatively speaking, water really isn't that wet. 🤣😉

Having grown up in Orange County California and perpetually looking for that representative hue, there are two you did not mention that perhaps deserve attention: Iroshizuku Yu-Yake and Montblanc Lucky Orange. Artist and Dyer here. When you deepen orange it is brown. Orange is red and yellow mixed together. You can have a wide variety of orange when but that hue has a wide range of names, like coral, peach, copper, All orange. Orange and yellow are very light in value (how light or dark something is). Lastly with dyes depending on the other chemicals and type of dye it can bond with the fiber on a molecular level. They are always transparent. Pigments stay on the surface and need binder to hold it on the surface.

      My first pen was the Waterman Phileas as well. It was given to me by the physician I worked for
      about 1989. It is still in my collection, and currently inked with Diamine Marine ink. I now own
      4 Waterman Phileas pens (Green/Purple/Blue/Red) and 2 Waterman Kultur pens (Turquoise/Soft Pink).
      The hobby started with the green marble Waterman Phileas, and now 420+ pens later. It's a sad story (LOL).

You could even pair the pens you talk about with a big release. Ex. When Goulet releases a new Retro- talk about a Retro you have that has a cool history. Does that make sense?

    A fellow former comic book store employee here! I worked at the midtown branch of FORBIDDEN PLANET in Manhattan, NYC for five years in the 1980’s and 90’s , running the comic book department (the store also had every sci-fi and fantasy novel in print in those days; as well as tee’s, posters, Dungeons and Dragons, action figures and model kits, Japanese imports, etc), then becoming store manager. That location closed during the early ‘90’s recession and the comic book business implosion of the era (from which the industry never really recovered, certainly not in terms of comic book sales), though the Greenwich Village store kept going.
    However unlike your experience Drew, when I went into the downtown Forbidden Planet about ten years ago, no one there had any memory of any employee from the 1980’s, nor even of the owner, as the store changed hands and didn’t seem to have a link with the original UK Forbidden Planet anymore (plus the store is in their third location now, even though it’s still on the same block with each storefront move).
    Pretty depressing, because that downtown staff were THE NYC comics store staff of that decade and period (and the store manager and other employees, along with the initial store manager of the midtown location had formed the ska-punk band THE TOASTERS, a long running and very popular NYC live act). Then this year I learned that that former owner Mike Luckman, who was a co-founder of the chain in Great Britain, and who had come to the States to open what was planned to become a large American FP chain (which never happened), and moved me into those job positions, had died! A very important chapter of my life seemed to really close with those revelations.
    The great think about Facebook is that over time I reconnected with numerous friends from those store days!

  • @mempo77
    @mempo77 Před rokem +1

    Orange is a fickle one indeed - I stranded on Iroshizuku Yu-Yake and Fuyu-Gaki, the latter being more of a reddish hue, hinting on bordeau wine (or a reddish, of course), the former being the more vibrant one, hinting on a candlelit pumpkin. Both being sufficiently intense and dark to remain legible, the more fiery one sometimes bordering on that 'neon/marker' feeling. Choose your paper and nib-gushiness wisely...

  • @NGMonocrom

    Waterman is a classic. Certainly not the best. At least not nowadays. But if you enjoy mainly classic conservative-styled pens, Waterman is certainly a good option. I have a few. Their inks are very good and can be found at reasonable prices. As far as their ink bottles go.... Some of the best in the industry. One, they look good. More important, they are pragmatic. Just a tiny bit of ink left? Tip the bottle on its side. It stays on its side. Now, you can collect that last bit of ink into your fountain pen. Waterman does not get the credit it deserves for having not just a good-looking ink bottle but a functional one that does more than just hold ink. I recall Brian mentioning another time years ago that when they had Waterman, the brand didn't sell well. Which is unfortunate. But as a business owner you have to cater to your core customer base.
    With regards to the Waterman Phileas.... It's named after the character Phileas Fogg from "Around the world in 80 days." By: Jules Verne. (Excellent novel, worth reading.) Yes, very inexpensive. But before the days of disposable fountain pens, the Phileas was how you got younger generations interested in F.P. use. Sold separately or as a kit that included everything needed to get started in writing. Nicer and more comfortable than a Parker Vector F.P., you could get the Phileas as a ballpoint, or a roller-ball. My father's favorite pen was a Phileas ballpoint that I gifted to him many years ago. Despite being inexpensive, he loved it. Used it often and carried it until the day he passed away.

It had been packed away (for years) and when I got it out, (when I rediscovered my love of fountain pens recently), and I took it out of its box, it was still inked up from years ago and I was amazed as it wrote straight away - impressive! I love all the new fun pens in different colours, etc but my Waterman is still the most comfortable and lovely one to write with 🔆🔆🔆

    Hi Drew 👋 Emmie here,
    I have my own ear-worm cleanser that's been in use for over a decade: just a spoon full of sugar (helps the mecidine go down) from marry poppins. I don't actually recall much of the lyrics, but humming the melody works. I also sometimes use songs from the sound of music, so I'm a big fan of Julie Andrews. 😂

    Sorry about the smoke, guys, but a lot of the smoke is due to climate change. I'm in southern Saskatchewan, and fires in the north of the province left us with 1 mile visibility for a while a few weeks ago. I also met someone from the far north of the province who'd been evacuated and was housed at the local university.
    Did y'all know that in medieval England, a peasant might never travel more than about 2 miles from home? And people today are exposed to far more information in a day than medieval peasant would learn in a lifetime.
    I was a back-up musician for a friend in the '90s; on the way home from one out-of-town gig, I mentioned I had one of my partner,s songs stuck in my head, so he started signing Puppy Love to help me get rid of the ear worm. I protested loudly, 'cause I LIKED his song.
    I wish I could travel to a pen show and meet you guys, but I can't afford to travel, especially to the US. Even if I were to mention travelling 8 hours to a pen show in Calgary or Winnipeg, my dear wife would disapprove. But I am signed up for the Pelikan Hub this fall!

    My first fountain pen was Waterman, and I loved it and took it everywhere with me ... but then I either lost it or it was stolen. I later replaced it with a Waterman Hemisphere which I still have, but it doesn't flow particularly well ... likely because I didn't learn how to truly care for a fountain pen until I ran across you guys and bought my first pen from you all: the Pilot Metropolitan with the 1.1 stub ... which is still one of my favorite pens. And I've obtained all of my new pens through Goulet (and one vintage Pilot from a used pen vendor which I also love!). An interesting thing to consider when looking at ink color is if the color is from a single dye chemical or multiple ones mixed together. I’ve seen some rather unique results when dying fabric and yarn when a dye color was a mix and the different colors strike (attach) the material at different speeds. Could be fun to do some paper chromatography on various inks to see the colors separated. I remember doing such chromatography on black inks with students to show how different brands had different formulas.

    Suggestion for disconnecting kids from screens: my family required us to take swimming lessons every year. Even though we hit a point where we knew what we were doing, swim lessons were a family requirement. If nothing else, it got us outside for an hour or so and it made us more excited to go to the pool all the way around. I’m not sure how old your kids are (sounds like younger), but it’s a necessary skill and helps them disconnect a bit.
    My dad also had a rule that we had to spend two hours outside beyond that. Didn’t matter what we were doing (I was usually sat under a tree reading tbh), but 2 hours on top of swim lessons. Just as often, we ended up getting sucked into a chore or something that someone else was doing. All in all, it worked out pretty well, and let us be introverted still.
    Just a thought-obviously I don’t know your family, but a variation might suit, too. Good luck with the driveway!
