TC Electronic SKYSURFER (Reverb) - in depth review

  • A digital reverb for 50 bucks? TC makes it possible.
    Don't expect super transparent, lush reverbs. At that price point, you have to accept compromises. What you can get is a usable reverb, that gives your sounds a bit of depth. If you want more, you will have to dig a bit deeper into your pockets.

    Henning, your reviews are the next best thing to trying a pedal yourself - I trust what I'm hearing completely. For an amp that doesn't have a built in reverb this pedal will probably fill that gap. Personally I've just picked up the Biyang Tri-reverb that a couple of other people have mentioned in the comments. It's also a great way to add reverb to a 'dry' amp, and has a bit more range than the TC.

    Hi Henning,
    I´m very happy that you have tested the Skysurfer. When I saw the promo video of TC Electronics on CZcams these days, I was so excited, what a great reverb you can get for 49.- €.
    Now I've seen your test and I´m back on the ground of the facts ;-) In your test it will be clear how quickly you get to the limits and that it doesn´t sound as great as in the maybe post-processed promo video. What a pity.
    I think my choice has now finally fallen on the new Boss RV-6. Ok, this is three times more expensive but you can hear it. And I´m searching for a great reverb that will flash you, when you turn him on :)
    Thanks for the great test! It helps me to take a decision :)

  • @CMQ01

    Nailed exactly what it's good for. I just bought it the other day because my built in reverb in my amp shit the bed. I have it dialed in at maybe 7 o'clok on both reverb and mix and it's fine. I only wanted it for a bit of reverb in my sound so it's not so dry. Any setting above that gets a little hairy especially if using any kind of OD/Distortion. Great review, Henning.

    Nice review, Henning. I have bought a chinese Biyang Tri-Reverb that is about to arrive. It has an A/B switch instead of a tone knob. But it has two inputs and two outputs, the feature that would have made me choose the skysurfer as a cheap reverb. (I had no money for two skysurfers considering there are other needed gear too).
    The only thing I am not sure about the Biyang is if the enclosure, switches and knobs are resistant enough, but I know I'll be gentle with my paws when playing and I'll protect it when carrying it.
    But along the way, I think I'll get some more reverbs, including homemade spring reverbs, buying spring tanks from China. It's easier to build than I thought. I keep an eye at the Hall of Fame reverb stompbox, though. It is my primary choice (as stompbox) if I had the money.

  • @cheeseUout

    its nothing special but if you need a pretty good reverb for cheap this isn't a bad thing. But if you already got a Hall of Fame, which can do a whole lot more and packs the tone print, its a better deal to keep that. I still don't understand why people drop $500 for a Strymon Bigsky when all their gonna do is put the reverb in the background

    I see this as a reverb you use just for some depth which is kind of demonstrated by TC's demos. And I think it actually does a decent job. That's it's territory. It's no space reverb. It's more like hearing a soundcheck in an empty hotel dining hall while standing outside of it. Like that. And I'll probably get it just for this task. Then run the thing into a good delay and that's the sound I like.

    I'm struggling with this pedal, and many others for spring, to me sounds more like a bathroom reverb. The best setting is Reverb almost full and a little bit of mix. And a use a compressor volume after to get things tight. I always run a Alien Verb (brazilian awesome one knob pedal) and nothing can beat it.

    As a cheap utility reverb the Behringer Delay-Reverb stomp box (DR400 possibly?) is also worth a look. It's a shitty, plasticky box but since it just sits next to my amp in the effects loop it doesn't get too much of a pasting. Plenty of options, sounds just fine and cost about half what this one does.

    • @joshshannon
      @joshshannon Před 7 lety +2

      Fraser McFadyen I've used behringer stuff for that type of thing for years. they're cheap and reliable i just don't throw them around but why do that anyway? but for a single tone type thing they're perfect

    • @trollslandan
      @trollslandan Před 6 lety

      I NEED lightweighted (=plastic) pedals, cause I usually need to fit a lot of stuff into a regular backpack. I would need to be quite clumbsy to break my Behringer, but hey, they´d make more money me buying a replacement. Everybody don´t skip and stomp around carelessly while playing :D but do get around playing from venue to venue ;)

    • @EytschPi42
      @EytschPi42  Před 7 lety +1

      Ian Kelly they are different... the Space Verb is big and spacey, not too great for subtle stuff... and it is missing a Spring setting. both are ok, but not great. Both are different in how they feel.

  • @StormJH1
    @StormJH1 Před 7 lety +9

    Henning - Thank you for the demo...I've been watching all of the "Tank" series reviews, but THIS was the one I was waiting for. (As an aside, did TC Electronic really release a series of 13 new pedals with a unique form factor and not come up with a NAME for the series? What do we call these?!)
    The reason I was particularly interested in the reverb is that this is really something new at this price point. Just like we didn't really have sub-$100 looper pedals until recently, we really didn't have sub-$100 reverb pedals, and particularly those endorsed by known Western manufacturers. So for a lot of budget and beginner players, this is potentially a big deal, especially if this the one they happen to see in Guitar Center and can afford (I have yet to see any in the United States, but hope that changes soon).
    Henning is pretty good about evaluating all pedals on a equal playing field, rather than gushing over a $30 pedal simply because of how cheap it is. I felt there was a lot of that going on here. Factoring in the price and that it's a reverb, I assumed this would be the biggest seller and most hyped of the new TC pedals. I largely agreed with his review - it's decent, but obviously doesn't offer anything that the $100-and-up options wouldn't. With the cheap Chinese brands, I've found that the more digital the effect gets, the scarier it is. The "Spring" reverb on this actually sounded decently "spring-like", and that's a type of reverb usually not found on the budget reverbs. Agree that it's kind of disappointing that there isn't a dedicated "decay knob" - I had assumed that's what the "reverb" knob was, but that sounds like more a wet/dry setting, while the "mix" is more like a "blend" knob. On the plus side, the "tone" knob seemed to make a big impact. This will still likely be the first of these that I pick up (also interested in Rusty Fuzz and a few others). Thanks!
