    I had a pet octopus, he would come up to the top of the tank and squirt water at me to feed him. He would eat from my hand and I could hold him and play like you are doing. This was back in 1982, and I accidentally brought him home in a seashell, he was so tiny, he lived about 2 years but died when we had a heat wave, I was at work and didn’t know the tank’s chiller had malfunctioned, when I came home he was on his last leg so to speak, he crawled into my hand and died. They truly are special creatures.

      This appears to be a dwarf octopus (not a common as he claims). They are 6” with the tentacles and have a minimum tank size of 10 gallons. The minimum is never quite enough for such an intelligent animal, of course. The tank in this video is a 29 gallon tank... nearly 3x the minimum. (Please note the minimum is listed at 30 gallons in some places, it’s different everywhere, but 10 seems to be the most common)
      If Houdini is a baby common octopus, then this is way too small. If he’s a dwarf like I suspect, then it’s either right at the minimum or 3x the appropriate size.

    You need to add more to the tank for him to explore and play. They’re highly intelligent and get bored and distressed easily when in captivity. I’d also recommend upgrading to a larger tank if you’re able. There’s a reason most people don’t keep octopi as pets, but since you do (and I mean no hate or judgement at all!), make sure you take good care of him. He needs live food and plenty of entertainment. He doesn’t seem to enjoy being handled. Maybe keep working with him and allow him to choose to bond with you.

      @@Ginger1818Snaps not necessarily. There are many examples of animals and marine creatures that don't require much space and actually thrive in tighter, more condensed places. They're ambush predators I believe? Meaning, they'll lie in wait for food to come to them. They don't go searching long distances for food in the wild, so they probably don't need much space in captivity. I keep invertebrates and it's the same for them.

    • @Tinyvalkyrie410
      @Tinyvalkyrie410 Pƙed 4 lety +4

      They usually live longer in captivity than in the wild at this point, because of predation and delaying their mating process. Other than reliable reproduction, we are pretty good at keeping them in captivity. As he said in the video however, they are a massive commitment that requires a high skill level and time investment, especially considering how short lived they are. I’d also caution against thinking of them as emotional, because that is super close to anthropomorphism, which can prevent us from treating them properly.

    • @elitheman7745
      @elitheman7745 Pƙed 4 lety +2

      @@Tinyvalkyrie410 In the wild and in captivity, octopuses have shown demonstrable emotions. They have personalities and have shown individual interests and relationships. Anthropomorphism is about applying constructed human traits to other life. No one in the field would ever deny that these are emotional animals. There is a difference between keeping a creature alive in captivity and keeping it happy in captivity
