My New Pet is Cooler Than an Octopus

- The flamboyant cuttlefish is the only know poisonous cuttle and only one out of 3 poisonous cephalopods. They don't live very long like other species and they are very rare to come across in the aquarium trade. Luckily a friend spotted these and tipped me off, so I got them. They're intelligence is similar to an octopus and their ability to color change is mesmerizing. They are absolutely stunning to watch. I purchased 2, but 1 inked in the bag and suffocated before I could transfer it into the tank. The other one made it so I took extra care to make sure it survived. I tried feeding it a variety of frozen food, nothing worked except for a live shrimp. I also fed uno her first live crab in a while and moved some octopuses around to make room for the cuttlefish. After some research I found out she was a female cuttlefish and very likely to lay eggs soon. Fingers crossed I will have an cuttlefish nursery soon.
There’s a lot of incorrect information here regarding flamboyants and even octopus. Also, to get a flamboyant without a robust live supply of shrimp is negligent and a perfect example of what’s wrong with many people in this hobby. As someone whose raised many generations of metasepia sp. this is disappointing to see.
So, what is an example of this guy’s misinformation on flamboyants and on octopuses. I’d like to research this to see if this channel is worth my time. But you have to provide the name of the video where the misinformation was stated as well. Thank you.
So do you have a actual channel about flamboyants and octopus or are you just being a jerk just because? Serious question?
Oh I see who you are now😂. Nobody just a blank channel not one video. You my friend are a troll troll trollinski my g!!!
Yep, I agree!
Since you’re an expert, could you tell me what species of cephalopod crawled up your ass when you typed that comment ? 😂 relax
Uno is so beatiful and cute the way she crawls around
Cuttlefish and octopus are some of the most intriguing and beautiful animals in the ocean.
And the OCEAN is where they belong! Not some guy in America’s TANK!
PLS BOYCOTT NUEVA PESCANOVA ABOUT TO START FACTORY FARMING OF OCTOPUS IN SOUTH SPAIN AND PORTUGAL YOU CAN GET INFO ON THE NET OR FROM PETA 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
Omg that harpoon at the end. My first time seeing a cuttle fish hunt. 😮
The dark stripes pulsing along the body is insane
My son is into having all types of aquariums and unusual fish! He does have just a very small salt water tank that his daughters and older sons can watch and enjoy! He said he’s going to wait until the kids are old enough(his wife is pregnant) to be around large tanks and fish they won’t be able to mess with! Meaning he would be the one taking care of the tanks! You remind me of him! He is very smart like you are and has a very inquisitive mind and gets his kids to enjoy so many different things in their lives! I love your videos! I’m going to show them to my son! Thank you for all the great information too! That Cuddle fish is very beautiful! You won’t have to put a sign out saying don’t touch! It’s always the most awesome fish that are extremely dangerous!
So Beautiful!! DON’T Touch!! Lol
You have a wonderful summer 2024!
Many Blessings to you and your family!! Peace!
As someone who has housed and aquacultured this species for a living, I just really hope you continue to do your research on this and other cephalopod species. There is a lot of inaccurate and ill-advised information in regards to the natural history and care of this species so viewers be warned.
No 1 thing to remember In my OP is They don't live very long so your best not getting them as pets.
It looks like this is the only cuttlefish video on the guy’s channel, so I’m guessing his impulse purchase resulted in the death of the one cuttlefish that survived transit. On the bright side, he may have learned his lesson and will no longer be attempting to have cuttlefish as pets.
She is absolutely stunning.
The shifting color display on her…. Mesmerizing 😍
If people don’t buy them, they won’t get sold. Gotta vote with your dollar.
She is beautiful. First time I have ever seen one up close. Thank you, Reef Doctor!
The wee little octopus 🐙 climbing into the measuring jar, just like a Kitty 😺 cat into a box.😂
As soon as we saw the bag was pitch black, I literally gasped and said "oh nooooo" out loud. 😔 RIP little cuttlefriend. Glad to see wee girl made it through and was eating her live shrimp. I love the way they walk on their appendages!
Hope Mr Rescuepus isn't too stressed out either. Can't wait to see how everyone is going.
RIP LIL CUTTLEFISH😭
That cuttlefish really said GET OVER HERE ⛓️ 🗡️
She is a gorgeous little thing! I love cuttlefish!
I'm more worried about the octopus stressing out because he has to be moved again
All the tanks are part of one big system so the water is identical. He also went into a tank by himself with a lot of hiding spots. He didn’t show any signs of stress and has been eating and acting normally.
@@thereefdoc Thank you for the positive update! I find these intelligent little creatures both fascinating and lovable. Thank you, too, for sharing your experiences with them
@@minaparish5687 octopuses unlike fish are more curious and adventurous, so moving them properly rarely stresses them out
It’s probably fun and enriching to explore a new environment
Octopi and cuttle fish are such cool-looking animals, especially the amazing way the get propulsion.
When you wake up with your head wrapped in tentacles, means cuddlfish love
Nothing is cooler than an octopus
I love your channel. It's just so interesting and funny and your love for your babies is just heart warming and brain growing!
That instant transmission sound at the end while harpooning 🥃
man idk but the fact that he bought the fish without knowing which tank he was going to put them in just bothers me so much both of them could have lived if he just set it up before hand
The system in the octopus room has 6 tanks running all plumbed together. All the tanks were set up and have been for a while. The cuttle inked during the shipping and transportation I may be wrong but it died before I got a hold of it. The other cuttle was immediately taken out of the bag and put into a holding container. So there was no setup of a tank at all. Moving animals between tanks is not out of the ordinary. since most of the animals I keep are solitary creatures and the water chemistry is the same across all the tanks there is virtually zero stress.
Wow I never knew cuttlefish use the side lower part of their abdomen as legs extended as needed. Such amazing creatures. Similar eye shape as my goats too.
Omg. Octopuses are so damn smart, cute, and sweet. So sensitive.
I hope the aquarium gave you credit for the dead one. I expected them to be larger.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! BIRDIE IS AMAZING AND YOU TAKE SUCH GREAT CARE OF HER!!
Oh my goodness! This was so amazing to watch! I enjoy this channel SO MUCH!
OMG! The speed of her “tongue”; appendage. I agree that that cuttlefish is gorgeous; the colors and patterns.
I hope Uno enjoyed her “live crab” and is feeling more communicative with her fan base and human companion! ( Supplying her with her daily needs.)
Thx for an update on your tank survivors, Reef Doc. I missed the shorts regarding the planet Earth/World’s famous octopuses!!🐙🐙❤️❤❤❤
Holy s*** that last part where snatched the shrimp and ate it was insane! Don't be a scumbag this thing has a very short life it's beautiful and was snatched from its National environment and happiness. Feed it live shrimp until the day it dies also get a male and let it do its thing
“Fan base”?! “Human companion”?!
Are you daft???!!!
That fish store didn't have Amano shrimp or ghost shrimp?! I would have bought both immediately
Dude. Your channel is exploding! Totally worth it. No one does octopus/cuttlefish videos like you! Keep it up ❤
Dude! Been following you from the beginning and you are totally changing and growing fast! Looking forward to this journey you are on
He's simply gorgeous!
Oh my gosh, YES! Please start a breeding program for cuttlefish!
You must have very loving, understanding wife Doc...that's all I'm gonna say❤
That’s a cool color cuttlefish. I recognized that fish store and then realized your a local. Cool. Good luck on the cuttlefish.
This is the first video I've watched on your channel
Bro the way you edit your videos is genius and hilarious
Man what a great channel. I love youtube. For me it's like school. I can find channels that teach you so much about pretty much anything. Awesome channel here.
So beautiful!
i'm so happy you got a cuttlefish yay
I highly doubt the supply chain is actually set up for sustainability considering how rare, new to science and limited in their home range.
This was really cool. You did a great job getting it to eat.
I am so excited to see baby cuttlefish!!! Ahhhh . So cool .
The octopus just going into the cup opening! 🤣
Love Uno ❤❤❤
So cool it looks like a literal living gemstone
Buying Imported living things is awful. 😑
Cuddlefish! With Danger Hugs!
I know that they are very plain, but for those curious about keeping cuttles (probably easier than Octo due to not having to worry about escapes, since cuttles don't climb), could you maybe make a vid on Sepia bandensis / Stumpy Cuttlefish? You can usually but them as fertile eggs, to have them hatch from babies, they get up to 4 inches, tops. But unlike Metasepia pfefferi (Flamboyant Cuttlefish), they are not venomous. So they should be easier to keep to beginners, while being the same size.
Plain? Did you not see that thing? It was the exact opposite of plain. The black bars pulsing along the body is stunning.
This is like watching a horror movie. How sad.
So sad they don't live long . I got a shock how fast she caught the shrimp
Moneyshot at the end😂
How beautiful she is!!! ❤❤❤ I'm so excited for babies!!!
I always loved and was fascinated by octopi. Thanks for showing people that these creatures are intelligent and lovable. 🐙
And crabs? They also are creatures that have a right to live in a way that gives them a chance. Here they are just food dropping straight into terror. I don't agree with this pet fascism.
Believe it or not, it’s actually octopuses 🙃
Its really neat how the cuddlefish kinda walks around
0:18 you're the one who called it venomous 🤔
The cuttlefish is truly a magnificent creature, thank you for sharing your tips and knowledge on this creature it really is humbling to know this tiny creature can do and experience so much, to be so small and brightly colored and deathly toxic to ingest, a riveting existence it must’ve had in the wild probably a lot of good and scary time it’s comforting to know our friend under your care will eventually get to experience one of the most peaceful send offs one could hope for being born in the deep blue sea, no fear of predation, as long it’s it’s stimulated I think it’ll be happy to know you it’s made it to some sort of paradise with endless food and protection and maybe even some harmless tank mates for stimulation and company, it be cool if there is a sea anemone that works well with that cuttle fish, I only hope ur long term set up give him that it could be maddening to be the only this alive in a room I’m sure it’ll like a ‘pet’ after all, anyways good on u may your companion and you cement awesome memories on here
I don't buy that owning things like this is a good thing. I think it can only support malicious characters swiping these things from nature. I'm willing to accept that I'm wrong though. It's just, surely if there's a market for such things, it's gonna encourage people to take em from nature.
Also, is the newspaper in the water with the cuttlefish?
What happened to this cuttlefish!?
No updates since 2 months…
Those cuddle fish are the most amazing creatures in the world. They do so much more than change colors, patterns move and shift like it's hot LEDs in it.
Where would a day octopus rank on your tier of keep/don't keep? And why? Thanks! I love your fish friends man!
Did your cuttlefish due quickly? I don't see anymore videos about it ... unless I couldn't find em
What happened to this cuttlefish? No more videos on your channel covering the cuttlefish.
5 months and no update, I hope everything is alright. I'm gonna subscribe when you update.
Cuttlefish are so cool
She nailed that shrimp
wow amazing
So what was the outcome @thereefdoc??? I assume no eggs since it's been quite awhile?
Wow!! That's kinda scary!! Be safe, we need you to keep these videos going!!
Flamboyant Cuttlefish are so cool
So since im just now watching this and its been 7 months any updates on this.. Is it still alive and did it have babies?❤❤❤❤
Cool! I usually clump up my fist at the end of the tube and no aquarium water intake for today. Try it 😂
I'm so happy for you! Also sad :( but so happy! I hope she's full of eggs, I know how much you wanted some of these beauties ♡ what will you name her?
I hope everything is ok. I just found your channel, i was hoping to skip ahead to see if the cuttlefish actually did have fertilized eggs but there’s no update on that. I thought it was extremely difficult to keep octopus and some other animals that you’ve mentioned, I didn’t know you could just buy them at an aquarium, so I’m surprised and intrigued to watch more. I hope to find a video about that angler fish, shocked to see that one too.
Wow !
Any follow ups on your new acquisition?
You really looking at the phone while driving? I was always mad about people filming these kind of videos while driving but this one is next level. No excuses, just stop doing it.
You are absolutely right : There is NO excuse for such irresponsible, ILLEGAL behavior!
How precise does the salt level have to be? Is it a PITA or can it be automated?
People who keep marine aquariums can either top off with fresh (not salt!) water anywhere from 3x a day to 3x a week to replace evaporation, or add an ATO, an automatic top-off, to do that for them. Most marine animals can tolerate a small fluctuation in salinity, though I don't know about cuttlefish.
I wanna see more of this
Any updates with the cuttlefish eggs ?
Be VERY careful, these can escape the tank and start controlling your mind while you're sleeping...you need to check all possible gaps and make double-sure they are secure.
is the cuttlefish still alive??
I’m glad you got her and not someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing. I find it sad when an animal has been caught from the wild for our entertainment. I feel better knowing she will have a good life with you
It is indeed stunningly beautiful. Not judging you but I don’t know what you paid but I wouldn’t buy it sight unseen like that. That’s just me though. Hopefully you got reimbursed for the dead one. Thanks for the video.
Somewhere in Indonesia, the cuttlefish population is being decimated.
❤❤❤❤❤
We need an update!
What are the black/white lines that move on her back (?)???
Cuttlefish have cells in their skin that they use to change color, for the purposes of camouflage, expression, and, in this case, a behavior that appears to be meant to mesmerize prey. Very cool.
How did the cuddle fish do?
Is Bertie still with you? I haven't watched your Channel for a few weeks. I hope she's OK😮
She is so beautiful. No wonder you wanted to have them around
Aquarium Village, I get my fish from there also.
update ? or did he eat it ? NO NEW VIDS ?
Correction on the flamboyant cuttlefish toxin: it's an entirely different and unique compound, not the same as the blue ring octopus
thought this was the md fish guy rofl
She looks like something out of Stranger Things!!
Were you able to get your money back for the dead one? Buying it unseen seems strange.
Very pretty cuttlefish, but i dont like the live animal trade between countrys...
Reminds me of that Simpsons episode when Homer ate that Fugu fish from the Japanese Restaurant.
This cuttlefish is on the same level, only deadly if you eat it.
Who ever heard of a Poisonous Pork Chop?
Only highly trained sushi chefs are able or allowed to prepare cuttlefish and puffer fish. They both are highly toxic if they aren't prepped and prepared properly ( that's a tongue twister isn't it? Say that fast 3 times!!)😅😅 the puffer must be portioned, prepped and prepared properly to avoid a toxic patient 😅😅
Are you and MD fishtank related🤣🤣🤣
how much did they cost?
Keep us updated on any sprogs
