    It's a James Bond homage. No one cares about Bond's interior life (something the recent films have forgotten to their disadvantage). So it's part of the genre is that we don't need to know the Protagonist's backstory. I thought it was enormous amounts of fun and isn't that what really matters?

    The thing is Tenet is a spy movie, he works with the genre tropes, making it more of a bond movie than like his other films, I also don’t think The Protagonist is the real protagonist of the movie, ironically Neil/Max ends up being the one you learn a lot about it you spend the time to piece together his storyline, and I felt much more invested in him and Kat, the movie has a different goal in mind, definitely not my favorite Nolan movie either, but people I think are missing the point that it’s supposed to be different, whether or not you like that is fine

      @SpikimaMovies  Před 3 lety +1

      Well said

    • @manujgoyal
      @manujgoyal Před 3 lety +3

      Yeah I felt the same way in that "The Protagonist" character name is actually there to confuse us. The real protagonist is not clear here and that forces us to make our own decision on who to relate to and what lense to view the movie through. It kind of felt like a pick your own narrative film. I watched a few times and noticed that you really get invested in different characters each time.

  • @pulsestorm04
    @pulsestorm04 Před 3 lety +31

    It's not only that. Many times, in Nolan films we don't get to see the protagonist's life in detail, and that is fine. He shows more than people notices, and with care and attention, you can spot them. In regards to the assertion that this is supposed to be a spy film wrapped in Nolan is also fine. It's that the protagonist is not even there. He is absolutely amorphous and has no continuity or consistency in his actions, motivations or even his character. Take the plot to save Kat for example. Suddenly, with the fate of the world ticking away, this man feels the need to save a woman who he barely knows. This is a man who was willing to bite down into a cyanide pill in the beginning of the movie, a man focused on the completion of the mission. That is how he is introduced. Yet somehow, he wants to endanger his life for Kat at this point, when they have the artifact and have no reason to undergo this risk. If in service of the plot and the movie, it works, but it just obliterates the protagonist. And in fact, things like this destroyed the movie for me, because I felt like no one really felt serious about this central problem they were all trying to collectively deal with. The threat of the world ending did not feel genuine. Kat later goes 'fuck it' and kills Sator prematurely. No one cares about anything in this movie, or remotely shows that they feel the stakes at hand.

    • @Caped___Crusader
      @Caped___Crusader Před 3 lety +11

      There are some genuinely fascinating video essays on the true nature of the Protagonist's intentions and decision making in TENET that will give you an entirely new perspective was to "why" he did what he did throughout the film, i.e. saving Kat. For example, the theory that the Protagonist is in a never-ending time loop and his decisions are pre-determined. Or the fact the he likely recruited Sator from the beginning. Or the fact that Neil is very possibly Kat's son, which then adds an extra layer of understanding to certain decisions made throughout the film. It is also worth noting that the very fact that the Protagonist was willing to bite down on a cyanide pill rather than give up his friends and colleagues is selfless. He morns when he wakes up and is told that none of the others made it. At the end of the Opera House Siege, he even made the deliberate decision to throw the bomb into an area without civilians. This very essence of selflessness- a core aspect of his character- leads him to put his life in danger in order to save Kat, a person whom he brought into his mission and consequentially would have been at least partially responsible for her death had she died. Which can also explain why him and Neil went back to the Freeport to save her life before (of after?) having decided that she could be useful in the final stage of the mission. That very selflessness coincides with his character. I would strongly suggest looking further into these video essays and topics instead of assuming you already perfectly understand the Protagonist's character and all of his motives. You will come to find that the character is deeper than you think. After watching the film many times and watching various video essays on the film, I have certainly come to appreciate the character more and more.

      @@Caped___Crusader he didn’t respond so you’re probably right. I agree with you on the protagonist, his motives made sense to me and it clicked in my head that Neil knew what was going to happen because it already has. Him saving his mother was destined to happen and he knew it would, the protagonists selflessness is extremely apparent at the start of the movie.

    We know he would give his own life to protect his friends. We know he has strong morals( protecting kat) and we know his main purpose in life is to save the world. Seems like a much better human than cobb, who acted selfishly and risked the lives of his friends. I had no problem with the lack of character development. We've become too used to one way of telling a story.

    Personally I don't take much issue with downplaying the Protagonist's backstory or anything, because the film's focus and heart isn't revolving around any specific arc. The entire movie is a "temporal pincer maneuver" and we see that most prominently between the Protagonist and Neil. There's a great video about Tenet and exploring its themes by Ben From Canada, I highly recommend it

    The relationship of Joi and Kade also expresses that once humanity is mostly subtracted from actual humans, it will live on in their works. Joi and Kade are both works of high technology and art, as evidenced by their complexity. They are mysteries to themselves and even somewhat to each other, but they both know what the other needs and move to fill that void. A trait that is symbiotic, and remembers life. Even if the humans who made these two did not feel loved, they knew what it should feel like and they put that in their creations.
    The movie says there is hope, as long there are others that feel the way we feel. And when we shave away those parts of ourselves that make us unsuitable, as Kade's chief has done, we also remove what makes us open to each other. and the message, in the end, is that there is peace in self acceptance. But maybe not victory.

    I've never felt so angry at a movie as I felt with Tenet. I was on the verge of leaving the theater for the last 40 minutes, precisely because of the imbalance between plot and character you mentioned. I felt no connection whatsoever to any of the people on screen, which made me completely indifferent to the huge action set piece that seemed neverending.
    Somehow (even though they were given no character beyond their current situation), the characters in Dunkirk were much more easier for me to relate to and care for, potentially due to the infinitely more realistic premise which helped me get in the characters' shoes and made me feel like I was watching a genuine horror film.
