Okay. Here's the big question: Midsommar or Hereditary?
No offense to Midsommar but it’s gotta be Hereditary
Honestly in my opinion they’re both amazing in their own ways. Hereditary has a captivating storyline that has so many shocking moments, while Midsommar’s visuals, even though they’re in broad daylight, are terrifying and disturbing.

Hereditary for sure. The main reason is each character in Hereditary is empathetic, and we all can relate to them. When it comes to Midsommar, Florence Pugh's character was the only one I felt that wasn't misused. Alot of the 'friend' characters were tropey but i love certain aspects of the film
the silence of the father in the dinner scene literally destroyed me. full of despair and yet no words. i really felt it

Maybe its because it doesn't try to scare you with quick jump scares? Ya know? The adrenaline from the jump scares doesnt last as long when you draw out that feeling of dread. Its hard to explain 😭

I couldn't finish it to be honest. It's the fist movie that has elicited such a physical response, and I don't want to experience that again. I don't know which scene pushes me over the edge, maybe it's everything. From the sounds to the toxic family dynamic that feels all too real. It nauseated me deeply.
i could never watch it again, and after watching it i wanted to cry and i didn't even know why
There were several shots of the exterior of the house where day turned to night with a single stationary cut. To me that was a light switch being switched on or off, implying that the house was a dollhouse all along, and that none of the characters had any control over their fate. They were just being moved around in someone else’s dollhouse.

The hardest part of this movie for me was Annie discovering Charlie's body. That wailing and crying is far too real to bear. I don't even have children and I had to pause and walk around for a second to collect myself. That scene, the scene where she get's possessed in the middle of crying, and the dinner scene are just so good, so scary, so anxiety-inducing. Amazing. Props to all the actors in this but Toni Collette takes this movie to the next level.
And Peter he does well but yes she’s wonderful
Might be one of the most blatant Oscar snubs of the last 50 years imo. She gave a powerhouse performance and fucking deserved that award. Oh well, we all know.

It would've been pretty awful to watch Annie getting in the car and seeing Charlie's body in the back, but even without that the viewer still feels the pain in her reaction.
And her "I just need to die" while crying in the scene right after, makes my stomach turn everytime.
The scene when she had a straight face after crying in the burning scene still gives me chill. Intense acting

I saw this movie with my mom! The first thing she said was that she hadn't felt that way after a movie since she had seen the shining in theaters! I'm glad someone else feels this way 😌
Couldn’t agree more. The shining was the first horror film I remember seeing at 8 years old in 1999 and I haven’t felt anything close to what I did then until hereditary lol.

The scene with Peter's panic attack while they are smoking weed is so heartbreaking. The way he begs "hold my hand" just makes me wanna cry. It's unusual to see boys depicted as vulnerable in that way in American movies.

I think that Peter's initial reaction to the accident is one of my favorite shots in all of cinema. How the camera sits uncomfortably close to his gaze, and then follows it up, up, up towards the rear view mirror... And quickly flits back down to Peter. It's so simple, and yet... Holy fuck.
I was on the edge of my fucking seat watching that in theaters. I was waiting for a jump scare that never came, which made the suspense enormous! I agree, this scene is UP there for me as one of my favorites!
The moment when the girl died was one of the most surreal moments I have witnessed in a movie theater. I remember 2 people straight up leaving the cinema during the scene where the mother discovers the dead body.
Yeah, I watched it in theaters and the audience reactions were very weird lmao. Some people laughed during the car scene. It's interesting how some people react when they're uncomfortable.

@@janelle9652 I think the laughter at that scene was a bit of mild hysteria maybe, cause the silence and just shaky breathing, and the numbness of just going to sleep afterwards was both surreal and felt like a realistic reaction to the sheer absurdity of the situation to me

Hollywood award shows have become a joke. It's not about honoring excellence in artistic achievement.
Rather they've become a clique of egotistical hacks excluding those not in the hip group.

The best thing about Hereditary is people are rarely interested in the paranormal scenes of this movie. All they talk about are the charachters. The emotions. And the reason why horror is quite an overlooked genre is that it very rarely is emotionally captivating and Hereditary is a very few of the ones which are emotionally captivating. The mental destruction of the watcher at the end of the movie is less about what they saw and more about what they felt. Hence this movie really deserves the appreciation.
I think of Hereditary, the film, in terms of the romance of soul to self and how it fractures, then comes together again, then falls apart again at her feet, only to be reassembled hastily so she can love an image of that soul she thought she knew or to love a persona in the guise of her son that shattered the self
into a billion pieces, the romance of Travis Bickle, e.g., and his soul reflected by the prostitute, how he's longing for his self to emerge or to say something or respond to something he said, and all he gets is silence. The woman in Hereditary is being rejected more and more by the self of her psyche. She becomes more and more frantic by
this dissolution. She longs to be loved by the self only to be cursed and rejected by this very self. It's a profound Jungian romance for me. She loses her self in the end, cutting off the head to spite the mind.
toni should've won an Oscar just for her scream alone. the scene where she's wailing for her daughter's death. you can literally feel her grief through the screen.
The shot when the mother is banging her head at the ceiling appears very frequently in my nightmares since i saw the movie... its very impressive
That part fucked me up so hard. Watching this movie in the dark with my flatmates was probably my first mistake, but I genuinely had to look away at that part it’s just too deeply creepy

That whole scene was seriously terrifying, i'm weak to jump scares but they are nowhere near as terrifying as the whole scene after the mother gets possessed, for me the worst part was when she started using the piano string to... you know.
Ari Aster's movies are like a very spicy, but delicious food. You want to keep eating it despite the discomfort it causes you.
And the pooping part is the nightmares that come after

As a huge fan of all things spicy and Ari Aster, this tracks
A few thoughts:
1) by avoiding confrontation and not filling the film with action, it mirrors real life post tragedy. Life keeps moving, albeit very sluggishly. Life doesn’t become a plot in itself.
2) by not creating tension between Peter and Steve, it really strengthens the film because the “everyone is at odds” angle doesn’t really reflect real relationship dynamics. It also really sets Steve as an excellent foil for Annie
Ironically, the lack of overt tension creates tension in itself, as you can feel how painfully awkward and distant the family becomes.
@@Zarastro54 You can argue that them fighting is because there's something left to fight for - the awkward silence feels like it's all just too far gone to even address it.
Yeah, too few people talk about how Steve was always at his son's side, never his wife's, or Charlie's
@@cloverbun2574that's my favorite side of the story. From Annie's side, we have a clear supernatural horror, but with her husband??? That's a whole ass psychological thriller. From Annie's side we know something is drawing pictures of her son, and that she's going to therapy, and that she didn't know her mother's grave was exhumed, she was asleep when the fire thing with her son happens, but from her husband? Her wife has violent tendencies towards her son by wishing to kill him, she literally destroys her work, she fixates on the death scene of her daughter while also depicting her son headless, she just appears out of nowhere with hundreds of pictures of her son, she leaves mysteriously and now her mothers grave has been exhumed??? She's guilty, of course. There's something wrong with her, and he's so sad because his daughter died and now his other kid is facing trauma and he just doesn't know what's going on and her his wife is so... odd. That's amazing
10:27 I wanna point out how mail is usually delivered all at once from a mail carrier. The choice to include the brochure being pushed in alone by itself absolutely adds a sense that manipulation is occurring. Even thought the audience doesn't realize it, this subconsciously messes with us adding to the sense of unease.

As someone who doesn't get scared by horror movies at all and finds the formula very repetitive and not scary at all. I've kinda become numb to them and basically judge my enjoyment of them based on filmmaking + story alone.
Hereditary fucking terrified me. It utilizes something we all fear deeply and packs all the emotions we build up in these scenarios and punches us in the gut. I have never seen something so expertly crafted and the film is just damn near perfect in my opinion. It's definitely not for everyone, but I just love this movie
Likewise. I've been desensitized to horror flicks since Hostel 1, Saw and Sinister 1 and those came out a long time ago. Eversince, I don't really get scared of any film anymore... at all. Only Hereditary was able to give me that feeling of dread in a film again.

It’s a great movie but it’s not really a movie I wanna watch twice the build it up and movie is really only meant to experience once I feel like watching it again and knowing what’s coming defeats this movie cause the whole movie is literally a build up to the end
@@Arbiter710 I actually recommend watching it a second time, because in many ways the main character changes upon that second viewing. When you give it a first pass, you're watching it from the perspective of Annie and Peter, the dolls in the doll house. But when you give it a second go, because you know the grand master plan that's being set in motion, you really end up watching it from the perspective of King Paimon. Instead of watching these people try to solve this terrifying cosmic mystery, you watch this demon manipulate his pawns into fulfilling their greater purpose. It's not necessarily a different movie, but it's a way more layered one and definitely worth the time and effort.
Same! I was totally over the jumpscares and this movie totally blew me away. I just sat in a silence for a few minutes after it was done and for you, you describe it as being terrified but i would say i was "disturbed". Absolutely brilliant film
I went into this movie thinking it was going to be your typical haunted house horror movie. Boy was I wrong. Very fucking wrong.

I'm glad they had the cult members be naked instead of having cloaks. Because 1. Cloaks would've felt way too cliche and cheesy 2. The image of the naked old man in the closet haunted me for months after I saw it, it struck such a terrifying chord and was an incredible choice
Nearly cried with fear in the theatre during the sequence with the mom following the son throughout the house without him realizing. That is quite literally my worst nightmare, and I DID NOT appreciate it being used against me, thank you very much.
The chase scene is horrific. She moves so frighteningly. So fast and sure and predatory.
That heading banging scene on the attic hatch messed me up.

I watched another video essay (can't remember who, sorry) and they noted that at the start, when the camera zooms into Peter's room, you can hear hooves underneath the music; Paimon is portrayed as riding a camel.

There is also a very low pitch, wobbley droning sound that indicates that Paimon is around. It's anxiety inducing in and of itself. I first noticed it when Annie goes to Joan's house to witness Joan contact "Louie." Then I noticed it throughout the whole movie.
@@lettylunasical4766 I’m just watching it again for the sixth time, you can indeed hear hooves clip clopping in the opening scene! Also while Peter is driving Charlie to hospital. I googled Paimon and there’s a drawing of him ridding a camel, his face looks a bit like Peter!
For me, the thing that makes this movie so terrifying and so haunting is that it is an unadulterated look into the deep seeded grief that overcomes a family. The raw emotions that you aren't allowed to look away from, the fear Peter feels when losing his mother to her grief, the way the family becomes strangers to each other. It is terrifying because it's so real. This movie is about human emotion, one of the scariest things anyone can experience. We, the audience, experience their trauma in real time and there is no escape from it until the movie is over.
I found Annie's grief scene on the bedroom floor incredibly poignant as it was reminiscent of childbirth. The visual concept of the full circle of motherhood when your child leaves this world prematurely,
Ari Aster does a great job at presenting traumatic grief in its rawest, realest form. Both Annie and Peter's reactions to Charlie's death felt like such a punch in the gut. It's so cruel in its realness - almost demented even. I felt similar dread in Midsommar during the scene where we learn that the main character's mentally ill sister killed herself and took both their parents with her. Then we see and hear the main character's wailing grief (much like Annie) as her uncaring boyfriend attempts to console her. Its all just so damn cruel. It's true horror.
She was crying and carrying on for months. For some people that is too long. It's his choice to stay and keep putting up with that or not.
@@ciscornBIG her entire family died. A few months of crying is not going to be enough to heal that wound. Of course, it's still human for her boyfriend to be exhausted by it eventually, BUT his lack of empathy in the film specifically makes sense because their relationship is purposefully painted as weak right from the beginning. The interaction with his friends at the start of the movie clearly implies hat he has been meaning to break up with Dani for some time now.. Them still being a couple with her being severely traumatised and him feeling stuck in the relationship is so unhealthy and part of the absolutist nightmare that the film creates..

Hereditary is a movie I can only watch once cause nothing will numb me to the pain of watching the son's reaction to his sisters' death and begging his mom for forgiveness in the attic.
I showed Hereditary to my family because we were watching scary movies near Halloween. It horrified them, my dad immediately said I shouldn't pick any more scary movies for the rest of the month (I later showed them the Wailing though) and he said it was definitely the scariest film he had ever seen. My sister was less terrified, but she was still freaked out by the film. My mom said later that she looks at the wall behind her when she enters a room now and about a week after watching it, she said it surpassed The Ring as the scariest film she had ever seen. So the moral of the story is....show this movie to your family, its fun!

My grandmother wouldn’t let my mom breastfeed me and always tried to claim me as hers. This movie was incredibly eye opening and it’s taken me a long time to accept the parallels. CREEPY.

What freaks me out is I made that same click when I was a little kid...
I was at my cousin's getting something from the kitchen, when I heard that click. I almost dropped what I was holding until I realized my cousin was just trying to get my attention.
This director really knows how to encapsulate grief. Real life grief and real life dread. Not “movie” grief. That’s why this and Midsommer are so damn terrifying. They are REAL
And his use of brightness and daytime instead of darkness (especially in Midsommer) make it even more terrifying. There’s no where to hide. No dark corners.
this is why i love midsommar more, the way Ari Aster twisted the tropes and made an excellent film that really fucks with your brain
I think not only grief, just emotions in general. In Midsommar the dependence of her on her boyfriend, he being sick of her, his friends being assholes, it's all very real. It makes you feel what they feel. In Hereditary the same, you can connect with the feelings of all three main characters after the death of the sister. It's just perfect.
It was so shocking and painful and absolutely accurate in so many ripping ways

I will forever be mad that Toni Collette didn't with all the awards for this performance. As someone who has cried like that, she does such an amazing job it's absolutely horrifying.
She's without a doubt my favourite actor in the world, she can play anything
It's nice to see someone bringing up and talking about Steve. He's such a cool and interesting character who's dealing with the absolute hell of losing a child, and watching his wife lose her mind. And all the while he does his absolute best to be there and care for Peter, his step son who is partially responsible for his daughter's death. Such a good guy in such an awful situation.
Can I just say. In this movie, Charlie is stereotyped as being on the autism spectrum. And I feel like the directors did this for a reason. Because a lot of other media takes the stereotypical actions of people on the spectrum and makes them into "oooooh they are all spooky and evil and possessed!" And that's why a lot of people saw Charlie framed as the "main character"/"Main antagonist" But when it switches to the dynamic of the brother and mother being the two main characters. Beautiful. It makes re-watching the movie so much better.
On watch one, in some scenes, because you are focused on Charlie, the brother falls to the background. But on watch 2, knowing the brother is the main character, it's flipped! Now Charlie almost seems to be in the background more often.

Exactly o remeber being in shock when I watched it, I was calm when Charlie was dying because I was think they wont kill her off it would ruin the plot ,then boom the most shocking pole scene that will stick w me for the rest of my life ,amazing movie

Well... I don't think people framed Charlie as the main character because she was stereotyped as weird, but because the directors did it, she is literally the main face on almost every cover of the movie, even the trailer shows every other character screaming, dying, or suffering except for Charlie, so people would obviously assume she is the main source of evil in the movie.
So i feel like the directors intentionally missdirected people into believing the wrong thing, like tricking them through false advertising.
This was the first horror movie that ever genuenly fucked me up.
It was so good I had to sleep with the lights on. The dark was always creeping on me for a couple days when I initially watched.
So badly that you forgot how to spell.

The numbness and (non)development of Peter after the accident felt very real. He's in a kind of ongoing shock he can't get rid off. There's no tears and acting out with him at first, but his guilt creeps upon him psychosomatically later on
The portrayal of grief in this movie was so visceral and terrifying that by the time we reached the climactic scenes with the piano wire and the treehouse I was genuinely relieved
the banging on the ceiling gave me the most chills, knowing that they're on the other side of the door trying to budge in then they show it was actually her head banging on that door so f*cking disturbing
Peter begging for his mommy to stop didn't help

What's so effective with Hereditary is how it's utilization of the REAL, primal fears we humans have is so well done in the screenplay, for example the sense of denial over having done something severely bad (the scene where his sister gets beheaded), I mean what would YOU do in that matter?
The familiarity and the "humanness" of it is what makes it scary, together with the nauseating sensation of tension and the forwardness of the supernatural, where as you said, they leave everything naked to present their truth, and that leaves many of the audience to leave in a jittery state.
Props to the director man.
i absolutely ADORE what ari had to say about cliches. if you're going to completely discard the 'necessary' cliches for a genre, you're almost leaving the genre entirely. breathe new life into a dead horse, don't breathe life into a dead lamb.
This and Midsommar left a scar in me. not even a bad one, I'd say, but it's a bit ironic how I always want to revisit the anxiety the movies gave me.
Midsommar is a joke. Decent enough movie but not in the same level as hereditary. Tried to outdo hereditary but failed.

The scene in the classroom when something grabbed Peter by the cheek like a fish and lifted him into the air and smashed him on the desk...ugh that terrified me.
As stupid as this sounds, one of the most prominent memories I have of this movie is when Annie is confronted by Joan she first states, "My daughter was recently killed." Or "my daughter was recently murdered" before correcting herself.
It's just such an unbelievable tell to me on the mental situation of the home. Annie feels like Peter actively killed Charlie. She is at home with her child killer. That is the mindset from the start, set in stone.
Also this entire film just feels like some abstract Bosch piece of art. The usage of music cannot be underestimated. Some of the soundtrack uses intentional binaural tones that instinctively set dread. Mix that with moments where there's just no music at all. It sows unsettling atmosphere.
Before Hereditary I’ve always described horror movies as scary, or very scary, or something like that, even Midsommar to me was just a “very scary/disturbing movie”. Hereditary is the first movie I’ve ever seen that has truly terrified me, this movie elicited true terror in me. I have a hard time just rewatching the trailer for this movie. This movie got me so bad that just the opening of this video with the click while Toni Collette is driving made me jump. This movie is terrifying in every sense of the word.

I think of the film in terms of the romance of soul to self and how it fractures, then comes together again, then falls apart again at her feet, only to be reassembled hastily so she can love an image of that soul she thought she knew or to love a persona in the guise of her son that shattered the self
into a billion pieces, the romance of Travis Bickle, e.g., and his soul reflected by the prostitute, how he's longing for his self to emerge or to say something or respond to something he said, and all he gets is silence. The woman in Hereditary is being rejected more and more by the self of her psyche. She becomes more and more frantic by
this dissolution. She longs to be loved by the self only to be cursed and rejected by this very self. It's a profound Jungian romance for me. She loses her self in the end, cutting off the head to spite the mind.

I always thought Gabriel Byrne, a tremendous actor, was massively under used in this film. Thanks to this video I know understand that this was entirely on purpose to create distance and a longing for familial connection in the audience which neither we or the characters get due to the scheme they are already doomed to be the victims of.
His performance is so muted and sorrowful. He was absolutely perfect in his role.

This was the first horror movie that actually kept me up at night in years. It felt so personal in such a visceral way it had me shaken up for a few days after watching it. Such an insanely good movie.
The scene where Peter has a close-up on his face in the car did such a good job at making me feel extremely anxious. This movie is absolutely beautiful.

Toni Collette is an icon, no doubt… but her face acting in this film is astonishing. Her capacity to impart rage, terror, grief, etc. through her face is unparalleled, and is my favorite part of this films.
The sound design gets me every time . The pulsating and unearthly rumbles low enough to not rlly hear but you feel it. Annie’s nightmare sequence will forever stick with me

Toni collette is so good that it's like she BECAME Annie. It's, to me, truly mind blowing. Actually, ALL the acting is incredible. Just an absolutely amazing movie all around.

I saw Hereditary in theaters with my brother not long after a death in my family. The terror I felt has since never been matched, even though Midsommar was also horrifying in its own way. I literally had a panic attack at one point, and to this day I’m impressed I managed to get through it. The clicking noise still messes me up when I hear it. All of this is to say that I love Hereditary- a LOT. I’ve been obsessed with horror ever since. Thank you for your insightful analysis, it’s always a pleasure to see others enjoy one of my favorite movies in the same morbid way I do

True. The aura of extreme suffering and sadness pervaded the whole film. It's like every scene is quiet and dead that a single display of spookiness breaks you everytime.
30 years ago, I saw "The Exorcist" and I felt something I'd never felt before when watching a film. "Hereditary" made me feel exactly the same way. It is a masterpiece.
The scariest part for me was when the son finds a one of the cult members naked and hes just standing there smiling at him. Idk to me that was truly horrifying.
The smile is so out of place with how fucking sideways everything else is. Somehow the smile is the most disturbing thing about the entire scene.

This is a movie I didn’t think was going to scare me. I was convinced it was going to be the same hollywood jumpscare bullshit. I have friends tell me this movie sucked. My boyfriend says otherwise, so do i. This movie is so psycologically terrifying. The fear that hit me the most is not the car scene, nor the ending. It was the loss the family had to go through. Tony Colette was amazing in this movie, she made me believe in every feeling she felt, every word she said. This movie was just overall so good it left me speechless. For people that are scared of the jumpscare hollywood movies, most dont like this one. I went into this movie without knowing anything about it and it surprised me. Nothing like I have ever watched before. Good horror.
@@johnathanhart2999 It's not so much about the theme, but more about showing real emotions. Just in general, telling a good story and relate it to real life. That's why these movies work so well. Some people don't appreciate that and just want cheap scary movies.
Trust me when I tell you that when someone is saying "that movie isn't even scary" they're pretty much saying "that movie didn't have a jumpscare that made flip while I was chatting on the phone", seriously they don't even pay attention to what they're watching and still have the face to say anything about it.
I love the horror genre (and all of its sub-genres, popular and not) so I hope that people who anticipate the mainstream Hollywood formula don’t ruin horror movies for others. Hereditary is one of my favorite movies ever, but we have had horror movies like Hereditary in every decade of film, and horror generally gets a bad rap because the jumpscare movies get more mainstream attention but they are far from the only kind of horror movies out there, in modern times and in the long history of horror. I think horror fans need to be on the defense because whenever a great horror movie comes out and gets attention, it’s immediately treated like an anomaly that outclasses everything else, or it’s treated as something that isn’t “quite” horror just because it doesn’t fit the really popular stuff - the term “elevated horror” makes me want to crack my tablet in half.

I think it's very hard for a lot of people to really watch a well made horror film. To most people horror film is full of jump scares and gore.
I saw Hereditary and Midsommar both just months after my best bud since I was a little kid took his own life. Was there when his mother had to identify his body.
At first the scenes of Annie after her own daughter's death made me sick, because of how accurate it was a real grieving mother. I wanted to hate Hereditary, and instead it just fucked me up so bad it took literal weeks to process.
Then, suddenly, I realized it was absolutely the most transformative piece of art I've ever witnessed save maybe Blood Meridian by McCarthy.
And Midsommar was no different.
His movies are Catharsis.
Like real therapeutic catharsis.

Watching all the deleted scenes made me appreciate the final product even more. There really isnt an ounce of fat on it, every scene that's there is in the movie for good reasons, and the same applies for every bit that didnt make it. Just an outstanding production.
Loving your insight. The music in the final scene is stunning and the use of a doll house view, in the last moments is just like those nativity models you see at Christmas. The use of the doll house effect throughout give me a feeling of something much bigger being in control of their lives.

I am so glad that somebody did this. I have the full script and companion book. A lot of these explain channels got it incredibly wrong. I kind of knew some of it already because I have a friend who was on the production and he explained a little to me.
I didn't watch the whole movie but watched the climax out of curiosity and that scene with the piano string broke me, it's the kind of scene that stays in your mind and refuses to leave your memory, ngl as someone who is a scaredy cat i regret watching it haha.
Aside from Annie banging on the ceiling wooden door with her head, most chilling moment for me were those 2 seconds when she flew into the treehouse
The part of her banging her head stuck with me for a long time. Because he was in the attic scared and it was semi quiet, and all of a sudden you hear banging from his pov for like a sec or two and then it cuts to her banging her head in the next shot. So you hear banging and you think she’s doing it with her hand, nope.
As someone who has experienced the struggles and fears that come with grieving, this movie FUCKED me up. The amount of almost primal fear and seemingly unavoidable dread I felt for the characters and their experience was be absolutely unreal. One of the best and well executed horror movies I think I've ever seen...
It also probably didn't help that the first time I saw this movie I was ABSURDLY high...

Hereditary is an unsettling film. I watched it the first time without knowing anything about it and... wow! My wife, who was watching it with me, said afterwards that during the film I didn’t say one single word, which is pretty unusual for me 😂

As a self proclaimed movie snob, and horror fan, I was super hyped to see this when it was released. It's a major event when a horror movie scores 95% on rotten tomatoes.. I couldn't believe that it exceeded my expectations.. never happens when there's a lot of hype. It scarred me emotionally more than any movie really has. The way it combines devastating family drama with incredibly dark supernatural horror is unlike anything I've seen. I rewatch it every few months

@@deckard3755 That whole scene plays out so smoothly. He wakes up and it's too dark to see her, but the way the shot is framed it insinuates that something might be up there. Then the motion detector above the garage is triggered by what you can assume is one of the cultists outside which illuminates the room just enough for you to vaguely make out her outline in the corner before she impossibly floats away. All the subtle details throughout this film are situated so precisely.

This is one of the best horror movies I have ever seen. The impact it has lingers with you, it imbues its essence into your deepest fears. The actors for sure played a huge part in its authentic dread, this is the first supernatural fiction that I feel could actually be real. It all feel so real, that is its key to visceral experience.
In the scene after the funeral, where Peter is behind the stained glass, could that be a subtle nod by Ari Aster to the Biblical verse “For now we see through a glass darkly...”? Peter is looking at the events from behind colored glass and the implication of this famous phrase is that what you see now is obscured but the whole truth will eventually be revealed - as it was by the end of the film.
Does this make sense or am I putting wayyyyy too much thought into this?
